Two teachers won recognition for excellence and a $20,000 stipend.
Lynn Shon, who teaches science at M.S. 88 on Seventh Avenue, was given the Muller Award for Professional Influence in Education by the Math for America organization. Gary Rubinstein, a math teacher at Stuyvesant High School also won the award.
Gary is well known to every reader of this blog. He is a great teacher, a great blogger, a stickler for accuracy, and is dedicated to public education.
I am also proud to say he is a dear friend, whom I have called upon repeatedly whenever I need help with graphics, computer issues, or moral support.
Congratulations to both well-deserving recipients!
Congrats! Great teachers should be celebrated.
Wonderful! Congrats to both the winners!
Wonderful. Yay to Lynn and Gary! 👍🌈
We need great Math teachers.
Gary Rubinstein’s blog is wonderful. He’s full of great, practical advice for teachers, and his Open Letters to Reformers are beautifully written and brilliantly argued. I highly recommend it.
Congrats to both.
Gary never ceases to amaze me with his brilliant deflations of deformer balloons (VAM, TFA, charters, etc)
Gary’s analysis of VAM is a classic example of how statistics should be used to shed light on a subject (rather than obfuscate, as is often the case) and has convinced many people — including
Harvard math PhD Cathy O’Neil (aka Mathbabe) — that VAM is highly unreliable as a method for evaluating individual teachers. O’Neil says it’s little better than a random number generator.
Gary did a whole series but the part that I found particularly convincing was Part 2, in which Gary highlighted the fact that teachers who were teaching related (eg, math) classes of students in more than one grade in a single year could be assigned 2 completely different VAM scores for the different grades, one indicating they were an “effective/good” teacher and the other indicating they were “ineffective/poor”.
Thank you Guru veteran teacher Susan Lee Schwartz to permit me your short and sweet comment. My English words are limited.
Additionally, I must also copy from SomeDAM Poet. Poor my English command, hahaha.

I wish (but not wishy, washy typical dreamer) that all independent bloggers like Mr. Gary Rubinstein, Ms. Mercedes Schneider, + ….can spare a few minutes once a month to participate in Dr. Ravitch’s blog. This will help all readers plus will eliminate all drones.
I can see why Senator Warren will not be with Senator Sanders as an invincible pair in Presidential Election. Who can be a Vice-President position?- EGO is the answer
Those corporate love EGO. If Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Sanders were a pair in 2016, Trump will never be today to create a chaos globally.
People still do not learn the very recent lesson. All potential candidates did not realize how importance of the USA democracy to all people in the word.
All young, inexperienced, and arrogant candidates ONLY OFFER VAIN WISHY WASHY POLICY and FAKE HOPE.
All old, experienced and related to bankers + corporate ONLY DUCK AWAY THE VERY ROOTED ISSUE = FREE K-12 PUBLIC EDUCATION for all American children according to Dr. Ravitch TO LEAD AMERICA TO BE A WORLD LEADER.
WHICH PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE CAN BE AFFIRMATIVE TO CLARIFY HIS/HER POLICY THAT IS BENEFIT TO ALL AMERICANS according to each class and each age category? Back2basic
Excellent!
