The Southern Education Foundation posted a very handy analysis of the education budgets of southern states.
Florida’s budget is a big win for Jeb Bush and Betsy Devos. Governor Ron DeSantis has proposed a small increase in funding for K-12 public schools (about 5%), but the outlay for vouchers will grow by 50% from 2018-2020, and the outlay for charter facilities will triple in the same time period. Spending on colleges, universities, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities is flat.
In Louisiana, Governor John Bel Edwards has flat funded most everything, including vouchers, but has proposed $101 million to give every teacher a pay raise. He is one of only two Democratic governors in the south.
In all of the southern states, the vast majority of students attend public schools from K-12. In states with charters and vouchers, the vast majority of students will be shortchanged so that a small minority can attend charter schools and religious schools. Their “freedom” comes at the cost of equity for all.
Georgia’s Governor Brian Kemp has added nearly $500 million for teacher pay raises. There is also a curious $2.2 million for a “chief turnaround officer.” I wonder how the state will find that magician.
In Mississippi, Governor Phil Bryant has flat funded most everything, but added $25 million for teacher pay raises. I guess he is satisfied with the status quo.
In Alabama, Governor Kay Ivey proposes a 29% increase in funding for Pre-K, a 4% increase in teacher pay, a small increase for higher education and HBCUs, and a small increase (under 10% for K-12) schools.
Tennessee’s Governor Bill Lee adds new money for charters and vouchers, since privatization is his highest priority. From 2018-2020, K-12 public schools get a small increase; vouchers are introduced with a new allocation of $25,450,000; $71 million is budgeted in 2020 for teacher pay raises; Pre-K is flat funded; higher education gets a small increase; and there is a new appropriation of $30 million for school safety.
In South Carolina, Governor McMaster flat funds K-12 public education and Pre-K; he adds $48.3 million for safety and school resource officers; and introduces $100 million for something I can’t interpret, a “Rural School District Economic Development Closing Fund.” He also includes a $12 million boost for the state’s virtual charter, despite a mountain of evidence that such schools are low-performing and often nothing more than scams.
In North Carolina, the other Southern Democratic governor is Roy Cooper. He proposes to flat fund charters and vouchers. He proposes $216 million for teacher pay raises and a fund of $10 million for retaining and recruiting teachers. Pre-K gets a big boost, and K-12 public schools get a small increase. He also adds new programs of $40 million for wraparound services and $15 million for school safety.
Remember, these are budget proposals and they must be approved by the Legislature in each state.

So many Southern states have jumped on the privatization bandwagon, a move they will likely regret when they see the loss in their crumbling buildings and the exodus of their teachers. Some of them have adopted vouchers, a big mistake. Sending students off to schools of questionable quality is not good policy. As for Florida, I am shocked at how the state policies do not reflect the will of the people. They never put privatization schemes up for a public vote. They manipulate it all from the top. To quote Forest Gump, “Stupid is as stupid does.” That is about all I can think to say about Florida.

I’m all for these states leaving the union and forming their own country. This new country will call itself Trumplandia. Then Trump will resign as president (to escape all the investigations and legal threats) of the United States and move to the new capital of Trumplanda (I wonder if that capital will be in Florida or North Carolina) and become president-for-life of that new country. He will announce himself as the greatest emperor of everything throughout all of history.
I expect that the U.S. will experience the same thing that happened when partition took place in India and Pakistan was born. Most of the Forever Trumpers will move to Trumplandia and most of the Never Trumpers will move out of Trumplandia. In the end, the population of Trumplanda will be almost all white with few colleges educated and number about 60-million leaving 260-million in what’s left of the real U.S.
After the partition ends, the real United States will build an incredible wall along its border with Trumplandia before Trump can build his wall. Trump will be so angry that he didn’t build the wall first and get to name it Trump’s Great Wall and get a fee paid for by his taxpayers for allowing his name to be used, he will declare war on what’s left of the United States.

Lloyd, that’s one of your best. I am on a bus and I just disturbed the other passengers by laughing so hard.
What about the line of succession in Trumplandia? Will the throne go to Melania or Don Jr.?

Ivanka will always be number one in Trump’s line of succession because he wants to … (You’ll have to watch the video to discover what that is).
His sons do not stand a chance, and Melania has moved out of Trump’s bedroom into another bedroom in the White House. They are married in name only.
Once Trump is the Greatest Emperor of all Time in Trumplandia, he will have the power to do what he wants and he will follow in an age-old tradition of marrying within the imperial family. Of course, I don’t think many emperors married one of their daughters but Trump loves breaking new trails and claiming he is the best at everything.
Once Trump gets rid of Ivanka’s husband, he will convince his Always Trumpers that a child between him and Ivanka will be even greater and smarter than the greatest leader of all time, him.
He will tell his fact-challenged followers, “Imagine having your 3rd future Trump emperor twice as smart and successful and handsome as his mother and me. Trump-Ivanka Jr. will end up ruling the entire world. Heck, he will rule the universe. We are that great.”

Sorry, I meant to write Princess Ivanka, not Queen Melania, Who by now lives in the outhouse of the White House. I have seen him eye his daughter and was not sure whether that gaze is adoring or lecherous. She reminds him of him.

I sincerely hope he doesn’t think her beauty comes from him.

Meanwhile there is proof that Bernie Sanders can learn from Diane Ravitch. He will make a speech tomorrow against for-profit charter schools, the only Democratic candidate to do so….so far.https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/17/politics/bernie-sanders-charter-schools-ban/index.html?fbclid=IwAR38v6MVrsmdtCrr8r6e4njmK9OwZ7uSi95ZuU4g4Ld0UFi4tEadgPpYxSw
