Governor Gina Raimondo, formerly a hedge fund manager, is unhappy with the public schools of Providence. Their test scores are low. They are definitely lower than the schools of Massachusetts.
She is thinking of a state takeover.
Whatever might she have in mind?
One assumes privatization by charter schools.
Hedge funders have a bad habit of believing that privatization fixes low test scores.
All they lack is evidence.
If they ran their hedge funds like they try to run schools, they would be bankrupt.
Unfortunately, she and they have no accountability.
I think if there was a list of people and their families and friends who are HEDGE FUNDERS that would say a lot. Bet the correlation would be significant.
Oh, good. Another poorly considered ed reform scheme that was probably written by a team of consultants and is rushed through so as to avoid public input or debate:
“GoLocal has learned that legislation will be unveiled in the coming week in Rhode Island that one bill sponsor is calling “game-changing.” According to Representative Greg Amore, the package of bills as proposed would implement a statewide curriculum; the ability for schools — not school committees — to hire; fast-tracking of the principal certification process; and giving greater authority for the state to intervene in failings schools.”
They haven’t learned anything. These people are IN LOVE with the idea of a “takeover” – they prefer a bulldozer. Then they don’t have to defend any of their ideas.
The people of Providence should protest this hostile act against their public schools. Rhode Island is seriously behind the times. The research is in and state takeovers NEVER work. They only hasten privatization. The people of the city should defend their public schools, and demand that the state invest in them, not privatize them.
She’s the Cory Booker of Rhode Island.
I’ve heard goat dairies in RI are underperforming. If the state government is filled with such management geniuses, why don’t they take them over too? Why limit the benefit of their genius to Providence schools? They could also tackle failing bowling alleys, minor league baseball teams and biotech firms while they’re at it.
😀
“Central Falls schools were taken over by the State of Rhode Island about 25 years ago and have consistently ranked at the bottom of all state and federal measures for decades.”
We need to remember, too, that this was the first year for this test….results are rarely, if ever, good (let alone great) for the first year. Remember MA and the MCAS on which the RI test is based.
Right…she’s not been held accountable for anything she’s done. I had read that (& this was quite a long time ago) she was being investigated by the S.E.C.
They didn’t find any wrongdoing?!
Don’t send money to the DGA, Raimondo chairs it.
