David Nakamura wrote in the Washington Post about the regular release of photos by the White House showing Trump surrounded only by white people. He should have added, only by white men. Trump’s only black cabinet member, Ben Carson, rarely appears in White House photos. Seldom is there a woman in the informal gatherings.
The monochromatic gatherings are a stark contrast to the increased and increasing diversity of the population, and an even starker contrast to the Obama administration, which featured diversity among its appointees and invitees.
”In picture after picture, emanating from the most exclusive corridors of American political power, Trump is seen with a team of aides and advisers that is almost exclusively white — a vivid, if unspoken, statement of the distance between the president and wide swaths of a nation that is growing increasingly and rapidly more diverse.
“To a degree, the photos are simply a reflection of what is already well known: Trump lacks racial diversity among his senior staff and Cabinet. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson has been the only African American in the top ranks of the administration since the departure in December 2017 of White House senior adviser Omarosa Manigault Newman, a former reality television star.
”But for a president whose agenda has centered largely on undoing the legacy of his White House predecessor, Barack Obama, the procession of daily images has served to reinforce the notion that the era of the nation’s first black president is over.
“The backdrop to this visual representation of Trumpism is ‘Make America Great Again,’ a nostalgic longing for a period in which whiteness and white people didn’t feel threatened,” said Eddie Glaude Jr., chairman of the Center for African American Studies at Princeton University. “For eight years, we had young Americans from all walks of life looking to the seat of American power and seeing a black family and seeing diversity in all its fullness occupy the White House. In some ways, just as Trump’s policies have sought to erase Obama’s policy legacy, the images coming out of the White House aim to erase eight years of the visual black presidency.”
“The images range from official events and bilateral meetings to informal social gatherings among the president’s staff. They are taken by news photographers, White House staff photographers and Trump aides, who post the shots on social media.”

Trump Vows Extensive Search To Find New DHS Director With Ideal Personality Disorders
WASHINGTON—Following the announcement that Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was leaving her post, President Trump told reporters Monday he would conduct an extensive search to find a replacement with the right personality disorders necessary for the role. “Though I admired Kirstjen’s ability to remain cold and detached when questioned about the decision to tear apart families at the border, we require someone with an even greater lack of empathy to do this job properly,” said the president, who praised Nielsen for putting children in cages but explained that the ideal candidate for the position must possess a degree of psychopathy so severe that they believe no law or moral code of any kind applies to them…

I will, ofc, support Biden if he is the nominee against Trump, but my support will be quite reserved. He has long been the candidate of the banking interests in his home state of Delaware. And he co-sponsored the bill that made MDMA a controlled substance. After that bill passed, it was revealed that the study it was based on–the one that showed that MDMA could cause long-term depression–had been done in error. The lab that supplied the chemical to the researchers had supplied not MDMA but methamphetamine. The study was retracted, but the law remained. Only recently have we seen some easing of restrictions on scientific research into these psychedelic compounds, and much of that research is extraordinarily promising for treatment of depression, alcoholism, debilitating fear of impending death, and PTSD. It’s taken years to get over the stupid moral panic over these substances, which show such extraordinary promise. Biden if a conventional thinker. Idaho Gov. Little signs bill to put work requirements on Medicaid expansion
BY AUDREY DUTTON
APRIL 09, 2019 11:11 AM, UPDATED 1 HOUR 48 MINUTES AGO
Voters approved the expansion — giving Medicaid health insurance to all low-income adults in Idaho — with a 61 percent vote in November.
Instead of funding the expansion or repealing it, the Idaho Legislature took up bills to change it…
Pieces of the law Little signed Tuesday faced significant criticism from the public and lawmakers.
During public hearings, almost every person testified against imposing work requirements, putting some people on private insurance, charging co-pays as a penalty for failing to follow work rules, and other sideboards.
Some Republicans disagreed with the measures, too, and broke with their party to vote against them.
House and Senate Democrats issued a statement Tuesday calling the governor’s decision “fiscally irresponsible and inhumane.”
“This legislation is designed to restrict people’s access to Medicaid expansion while costing the state millions every year,” the statement said…

A narrow justice department interpretation of the emoluments clause gives countries leeway to curry favor with the president via commercial deals
Peter Stone in Washington
Tue 9 Apr 2019 02.00 EDT
The so-called foreign emoluments clause was intended to curb presidents and other government officials from accepting gifts and benefits from foreign governments unless Congress consents.
But in a forthcoming article in the Indiana Law Journal, the Washington University Law professor Kathleen Clark reveals justice department filings have recently changed tack. The new interpretation, Clark says, is contained in justice filings responding to recent lawsuits lodged by attorneys generals and members of Congress.
Clark’s article notes that in more than 50 legal opinions over some 150 years justice department lawyers have interpreted the clause in a way that barred any foreign payments or gifts except for ones Congress approved. But filings by the department since June 2017 reveal a new interpretation that “… would permit the president – and all federal officials – to accept unlimited amounts of money from foreign governments, as long as the money comes through commercial transactions with an entity owned by the federal official,” the professor write…

The Real Agenda of Trump & GOP Revealed
Yesterday, in an interview with the Washington Post, Former Trump economic adviser Gary Cohn revealed he was “stunned” by Trump’s proposed 2020 budget recommending $26 billion in cuts to Social Security and the Social Security Disability Insurance program.
What’s stunning is that anybody would be stunned by this.
Republicans in Congress and the trump administration are proposing these cuts to Social Security by billions of dollars, while increasing multibillion dollar subsidies for the oil industry and eliminating the ability of states to protect themselves and their citizens from badly constructed oil pipelines. This tells you everything about their priorities: big bucks for billionaires and their planet-poisoning oil wells; retired people and disabled people can just die in the streets.
The GOP is going to try to distract us with hysteria about the southern border, abortion, and gun control. But this is their real agenda.

What Julian Assange’s Arrest Means For Freedom Of The Press
…But where Assange’s case becomes potentially threatening to journalists and press freedom, First Amendment experts say, is that prosecutors never convincingly lay out what Assange did that would rise to the level of assisting in a criminal conspiracy. Instead, many of the actions listed in the indictment as part of a criminal conspiracy appear to be normal journalistic practices necessary to a free press, such as keeping a source anonymous and sharing information protected by a password.
“If the government is not rigorous about drawing really clear lines that do not implicate standard reporting activities, then it gets problematic,” said Stuart Karle, an adjunct professor at Columbia Journalism School and general counsel at North Base Media.
Assange is a divisive figure, and the status of WikiLeaks as a journalistic enterprise is contested, but the case goes beyond either of those issues. If Assange is convicted without more concrete proof that his actions went well beyond that of a publisher receiving classified information, then it opens up a host of questions about who else is liable.
“If this is allowed, it just really shows that any time a journalist works with a government employee or contractor, then the government could consider that conspiracy to commit a crime,” Leslie said….
There is also precedent that the press obtaining illegally acquired documents is not in itself a crime. A U.S. Supreme Court case decided in 2001 (Bartnicki v. Vopper) essentially held that members of the press are not liable for publishing or broadcasting illegally obtained information if they were not involved in its acquisition…

Asylum in the United States
Each year, thousands of noncitizens arriving at our border or already in the United States apply for asylum, or protection from persecution. Asylum seekers must navigate a difficult and complex process that can involve multiple government agencies. Those granted asylum have the opportunity to apply to live in the United States permanently, receive certain benefits, and be reunited with their family members. This fact sheet provides an overview of the asylum system in the United States, including how asylum is defined, eligibility requirements, and the application process.
What Is Asylum?
Asylum is a protection granted to foreign nationals already in the United States or at the border who meet the international law definition of a “refugee.” The United Nations 1951 Convention and 1967 Protocol define a refugee as a person who is unable or unwilling to return to his or her home country, and cannot obtain protection in that country, due to past persecution or a well-founded fear of being persecuted in the future “on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.” Congress incorporated this definition into U.S. immigration law in the Refugee Act of 1980.
As a signatory to the 1967 Protocol, and through U.S. immigration law, the United States has legal obligations to provide protection to those who qualify as refugees. The Refugee Act established two paths to obtain refugee status—either from abroad as a resettled refugee or in the United States as an asylum seeker.
What Are the Benefits of Asylum?
An asylee—or a person granted asylum—is protected from being returned to his or her home country, is authorized to work in the United States, may apply for a Social Security card, may request permission to travel overseas, and can petition to bring family members to the United States. Asylees may also be eligible certain benefits, such as Medicaid or Refugee Medical Assistance.
After one year, an asylee may apply for lawful permanent resident status (i.e., a green card). Once the individual becomes a permanent resident, he or she must wait four years to apply for citizenship…

Strong Jobs Market Spurs Bigger Salary Offers
“Americans still think plenty of jobs are available and companies are offering better pay as they compete for a shrinking pool of available labor, new study by the New York Federal Reserve shows,” Jeffry Bartash reports in MarketWatch.
“The Fed study is the latest proof the jobs market continues to sizzle. The rate of layoffs each week — known as jobless claims — fell below 200,000 earlier this month for the first time since 1969. The economy also added almost 200,000 new jobs in March after a feeble 33,000 gain in February, keeping the unemployment rate at 3.8%.”
“President Obama used to stir Americans with his powerful calls for national unity. It looks like he has, after all these years, finally forged agreement among leaders in both parties that his health care law made things worse and should be replaced. Bipartisanship blooms in Washington,” Scott Jennings writes in the Courier-Journal. “Voters in both parties know they were duped by Obama’s health care promises. Private insurance customers saw their premiums and deductibles jump to pay for someone else’s health care, but not their own.”
“How’s this for unexpected irony: As New York pols move to choke their own economy by nixing new natural-gas supplies, President Trump is racing to the rescue,” the New York Post editorial board writes. “Trump last week signed two executive orders to help ease the way for new oil and gas pipelines and other energy projects. One, seemingly aimed squarely at New York, requires the Environmental Protection Agency to look for ways to make it harder for states to use the Clean Water Act to block pipelines”—a common tactic of Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY), the editors add.
