The CEO of UNO/Acero Charter Schools, Robert Rodriguez, is angry that his teachers went out on strike. He blames the union and “outside” interests who are anti-charter. Apparently, he does not take seriously his teachers’ demands for higher pay and smaller class sizes. He disrespects them by not hearing their voices.
This is a video of him reading his letter.
In his letter and statement, he describes Acero as “one of the best performing charter networks in Chicago.”
Dana Goldstein wrote in the New York Times, however, that “At Acero schools, a quarter of students met standards on state exams in 2016, the same percentage who met standards in the Chicago district schools, according to a report from the Illinois State Board of Education.”
If that is what it means to be “one of the best performing charter networks in Chicago,” that speaks poorly of the entire charter sector.

If only one student at Acero met the standards on state exams, Robert Rodriguez would still say: “In his letter and statement, he describes Acero as one of the best performing charter networks in Chicago.”
If What Rodriquez claimed was true, then how horrible are the other charter networks in Chicago?

The teachers are not “his” teachers. In fact, the reasons behind striking include establishing fair treatment, gaining independence, and demonstrating equal value. When the pronoun indicates ownership it reinforces the notion that “he” is the owner, the top of a hierarchy. I try very hard to make the teachers I help to prepare aware of the messages “taken-for-granted” language can convey.

I wonder how many of the striking teachers are TFAers.

Don’t you have to sign some lifetime agreement when you join TFA that says you will never strike and never say a single bad word about TFA?
The only reason Gary Rubenstein was not sued for the latter part of the agreement is that he has said many bad words about TFA and not just a single bad word. (Sometimes it pays to read the fine print)

Well, yeah, I guess. When you set your demands so high that only the most obsessed, unhealthily driven, pressured kids can keep up and there are no supports for students with disabilities or learning differences, so you kick out all the riff-raff, I suppose that does get you a rating of “great”.
Just don’t call it fair or humane or decent or just.
