What is happening on the southern border is appalling. Trump has given the order to the Border Patrol to use lethal force, if necessary.
At this moment, the Border Patrol is using tear gas against families, and the news is full of photographs of mothers with their babies in diapers fleeing from the tear gas.
Welcome to Trump’s America!
FOX News calls this a “battle for the southern border.” Really? A battle between a bunch of bedraggled migrant families and our military? Oh, and FOX forgot to mention the federal report warning about a likely climate catastrophe in the not distant future. FOX was too obsessed with the “battle for the southern border” to give time to the climate change report from the Trump administration, which was strategically released on Friday at 2 pm in the midst of the Thanksgiving weekend in the hope that no one would notice it.
And another milestone in the era of MAGA: GM announced it is closing 5 of its American plants and laying off 10,000 workers. I wonder if they will get a Christmas bonus or even a card?

And his white racist base is whooping it up. San Diego’s Border Patrol chief, Rodney Scott looks like a happy klan boy in a sheet shop that sells weapons on the side. It’s just like Hyde-Smith’s obvious, deliberate pandering to the same audience.

Ford is not GM. I want to make that clear.
But both started as US industries producing autos. Both Ford and GM are losing money in the U.S. because of TD’s malignant narcissist ignorant idiocy.
Both GM and Ford also produce cars in China that they sell in China and both Ford and GM are selling more cars in China than they are in the US. As far as I know GM and Ford do not produce cars in China and ship them to the states to sell. I think all of the cars they produce in China stay in China.

GM was going to do away with the Buick brand, but because of Buick’s popularity in China, the brand survived. Chinese consumers saved the Buick. And that led to new Buick’s that never existed in the US.
“How China, Not Your Grandfather, May Have Saved Buick’s Future”
“Ironically, it’s not the U.S. that’s driving Buick’s revival. Credit goes to China, though industry analysts suggest that demanding Asian consumers have actually helped the brand develop new products more in tune with American buyers, as well.”
https://www.nbcnews.com/business/autos/how-china-not-your-grandfather-may-have-saved-buick-s-n552571
And yes, China’s hottest auto export to the US is a Buick, because GM produces new Buick model’s in China that never existed in the US.
“The Envision did not replace an existing US-made model or eliminate any jobs in the US,” he noted. The Envision sells more units in China than in the US so it wouldn’t be economically smart to produce the car in the US to ship the China since that model exists only because of China’s love for Buicks.
“Buicks are hugely popular in China, and, according to some industry analysts, that is one of the reasons the brand has survived in the GM lineup. The Envision was responsible for 228,257 sales last year in China, according to Flores.”
But “About 32,000 of the vehicles, which sell at a base price of $34,065, have been sold in the US since the company introduced the compact SUV to the US market last summer.
https://nypost.com/2017/07/02/gm-is-producing-popular-car-in-china-exporting-to-us/
In China, the Buick is the car to buy if you want to show off — how successful you are.
Trump is and continues to be and will always be a total IDIOT and that is only one of his faults, he has many of them!
AND, foreign companies like GM cannot do business in China unless they manufacturer some if not all of their products there. It’s a big market. Only an idiot like Trump would ignore that but he’s so stupid, he doesn’t know all these facts.

I’m waiting for Trump to proudly explain why this happened. Trump’s tariffs caused companies to loose money. Cars aren’t selling because average people don’t have the money to purchase a new car. The tax break for the wealthy must not be trickling down to workers. We were supposed to get $4,000 more according to Trump and he never lies. [sarcasm]
The US is loosing its place in the world. People all over now know that we send troops to the border to possibly kill immigrants and to definitely send tear gas to threaten poverty stricken children and adults who are struggling to get away from the rapes and violence in their native lands. This whole thing is sickening.
Asking for amnesty is not a crime. Instead of putting the military on the border, why not increase the number of people who work to process amnesty requests?

Does that free trade include open borders so that any and all goods and people can move freely back and forth as they choose?

Duane,
Generally “free trade” is about moving goods and services across borders, not people.
You are right to think they are connected. If a worker in Mexico can freely send what they produce in Mexico to the United States, there is less incentive to cross the border and make those things in the United States. If it is difficult for a worker in Mexico to sell goods produced in Mexico to the United States, that worker has incentives to cross the border and produce things in the United States.
Trade restrictions encourage immigration, free trade reduces the incentive to immigrate.

There is no such thing as free trade. Our trade agreements pick winners and losers. you correctly point out that consumers in this country were winners. Farmers in this country were winners. It is worth noting that farmers in Mexico lost “bigly”. Rural poverty went through the roof and desperate Mexicans flooded across the border. It is also indisputable that a minimum of 2.5 million Americans lost jobs in manufacturing; prior to the great recession. That there is a loss of multiples of their wages in the communities they were in.
The great leaps in productivity(Robots) occurred between the seventies and the nineties. By the eighties, pop culture tells us that Allentown and My Home Town “lost those jobs and they ain’t coming back”
Like putting toothpaste back in the tube. The Jobs are not coming back. Before that happens we will see another great leap in productivity as manufacturers build highly automated plants.
So before we say that free trade is good we have to ask for who?
A few interesting interviews were given on Ali Velshi’s show. One was with a commissioner on the European Commission. The first words out of his mouth were: “in the aggregate trade has been good. We forgot that people are not aggregates and there were many losers.”
To which Velshi replies we will have to provide training. Playing into two popular memes. 1) all we need is education 2) we have a skills shortage.
What we had was a hollowed out economy not capable of generating the demand without bubbles one in capital markets the other in housing. When these bubbles popped we had severe recessions followed by secular stagnation. Finally, after 10 years of loose monetary policy, we are still bellow the peak employment of most of the 90s. As the prime age worker participation rate is still (I think) 2% lower than that period.
That is a lot of winning.
The second interview was with Larry Summers who was asked why Americans should care about Intellectual Property rights. Summers response as Ali and Stephanie choked. “Apple shareholders should care. Bill gates should care.”
So yes our trade agreements pick winners and losers.
LikeLike
Joel,
It is certainly true that any trade policy, free trade, autarky, and everything in between, creates winners and losers in society. The same is true for technological change.
I do disagree with Larry Summers, however. The reason to care about intellectual property is not to make people who have already developed intellectual property happy, but to make the people who will develop new ideas and creative works in the future happy to devote the time and effort into developing the new ideas.

Nielsen: Gassed Border Children Were Used as ‘Human Shields’
The Trump administration is doubling down on its use of tear gas on women and children at the Mexican border, with Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen speculating without evidence that vulnerable people were used as “human shields” by migrants.
Shocking photographs showed border agents deploying tear gas against people seeking asylum in the U.S. on Sunday, including young girls wearing diapers. In a lengthy statement late Monday, Nielsen speculated the women and children were used tactically by a migrant group. “It appears in some cases that the limited number of women and children in the caravan are being used by the organizers as ‘human shields’ when they confront law enforcement,” she wrote on Facebook. “They are being put at risk by the caravan organizers as we saw at the Mexico-Guatemala border. This is putting vulnerable people in harm’s way.”
The unverified allegation is similar to one offered by President Trump on Monday evening, when he said “grabbers” take children to protect themselves from harm.

Laughter is the best medicine and response to any one who paints the administration as heartless by defending our border with nonlethal force – in the same manner as Obama!
Calling Trump and his supporters racists makes you feels good, but we have to be able to defend our borders. The longer we avoid creating a sound immigration policy, the more we will see migrant waves trying to force their way in. What do we do once that happens?
Mocked for sending military troops to the border- called a waste of time and resources. Chided for keeping these soldiers away from their families on Thanksgiving. But all of a sudden, having serious military leadership on a border that looks like a powder keg makes a ton of sense. Quite frankly, real military leadership is what we need if next week, instead of a few hundred, we have a few thousand people trying to rush the border.
A whole lot of people have explained what this family separation was, how it is the law, how it’s been the law created by the ACLU and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, how it happened during the Obama administration and how there was not a single tear, not a single tear, no crying or wailing when it happened during the Obama administration. his was happening five years ago when the Obama administration was in power, Border Patrol tear gassed women and children and others trying to get across the border at exactly the same spot.
Do you remember hearing about that news? No, It was a group of 100 illegal aliens trying to storm the border. They were throwing rocks and bottles. That incident never made the network news. Because there was no way they were ever gonna portray Obama as being cruel.

Nor has anyone here provided solutions – other than let the horde in – amnesty? No one here offers to pitch a tent in their yard to house and feed them – I wonder if Beto will allow them in his yard.
There was a major faux pas that occurred on PMSNBC last night. They were having a discussion on the arrival of the caravan, Tijuana and the border. And of course the popular impression that’s being left is it’s a bunch of women, displaced mothers and their children are being tear gassed, Trump is tear gassing them! This is the general picture being painted.
Last night some people screwed up by admitting that the majority of the people in the caravan are men, 20-year-old men, and some of them are grabbing babies out of the caravan and moving to the front because they realize if there’s a child in tow that it changes everything.
Anyway, that picture was cropped. The actual real photo shows four or five other poses taking place within that single frame on both sides of the water. There are so many photographers taking pictures in that frame. And that cropped photo then was used all over newspapers in America yesterday morning. But the bag was kind of opened up inadvertently, these MSNBC people admitting that most of the people in the caravan are men.
November 26, 2018 2:50 pm
An MSNBC correspondent said Monday that the majority of people in the migrant caravan at the southern border were men, noting some of them weren’t talking about seeking asylum.
Reporting just over the southern border in Tijuana, Mexico, Gadi Schwartz took viewers on a walking tour through the “inner sanctum” of the shelter for the caravan, which consists of Central American migrants.
“You’re going to see a lot of families here, a lot of women and children, but the truth is the majority of the people that are part of this caravan … the majority of them are men, so when this becomes a polarized, political issue in the United States, you have people on one side that point and say, ‘There are women and children here,’ and that is true, and then there are others who point and say, ‘These are men that are trying to cross the border,’ and that’s true, too,” Schwartz said.
the Border Patrol stated that the caravan organizers actually used the women and children as human shields, putting mom and kids out front to take the incoming tear gas while the thugs at the back threw rocks and projectiles.
As the Washington Post (no fans of Trump) reported this weekend:
“Last month, 23,121 members of ‘family units’ were arrested along the U.S. southern border, the highest number on record and a 150 percent increase since July.” According to the Post, smugglers working with would-be illegal immigrants have essentially weaponized children in their attacks on our borders.
“Thousands more children are coming in the migrant caravans[.] … This is happening because Central Americans know they will have a better chance of avoiding deportation, at least temporarily, if they are processed along with children.” The Post says smugglers are even lowering their prices when would-be border crosses come with kids.
BTW – I am sure you are aware of the Ferguson family who lost their daughter to an illegal alien who ran a red light and killed her – mangled her body so bad that the mortician suggested the father not view remains. I didn’t hear about this on the lame stream media – didn’t fit the agenda?

Doctors Say Using Tear Gas On Migrant Children Can Have Severe, Long-Lasting Effects
by 12newsNovember 27, 2018

Separating children from their parents is not immigration policy,” Shapiro said. “It’s torture.”
Tear gas, a chemical weapon that is banned on battlefields in almost every country, has a particularly harsh effect on children because of their weaker respiratory systems, according to doctors. Chaos erupted in Tijuana, Mexico, on 25 November 2018 when U.S. Border Patrol agents unleashed tear gas on migrants near a major border crossing point. And as per usual, that chaos prompted opportunistic purveyors of misinformation to swing into action.
That misinformation was based on a marked-up picture taken by a Reuters photographer that shows Maria Meza, a 39-year-old migrant from Honduras, clinging to her small children and running away from a tear gas canister fired by U.S. Border Patrol agents. The wrenching photograph prompted public outrage, but some commenters, including the notoriously unreliable Gateway Pundit website, seized the opportunity to falsely claim the picture was a hoax, drawing that conclusion from the fact that other photographers could be seen in the frame…

Desert Detention Camp for Migrant Kids Still Growing…Snopes
ASSOCIATED PRESS
PUBLISHED 27 NOVEMBER 2018
TORNILLO, Texas (AP) — The Trump administration announced in June it would open a temporary shelter for up to 360 migrant children in this isolated corner of the Texas desert. Less than six months later, the facility has expanded into a detention camp holding thousands of teenagers — and it shows every sign of becoming more permanent.
By Monday, 2,349 largely Central American boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 17 were sleeping inside the highly guarded facility in rows of bunk beds in canvas tents, some of which once housed first responders to Hurricane Harvey. More than 1,300 teens have arrived since the end of October alone.
Rising from the cotton fields and dusty roads not far from the dark fence marking the border between the U.S. and Mexico, the camp has rows of beige tents and golf carts that ferry staffers carrying walkie-talkies. Teens with identical haircuts and government-issued shirts and pants can be seen walking single file from tent to tent, flanked by staff at the front and back.
More people are detained than Tornillo’s tent city than in all but one of the nation’s 204 federal prisons, yet construction here continues.

I repeat this – flipped again – this is a man of integrity and honesty? Like every other Mueller witness is a liar! Every Mueller witness at one time or another is a liar, according to Mueller himself!
And we’re being told, we believe what they say now because the Robert Mueller, is telling them to tell the truth.”And what happens if they don’t tell the truth after? Then he will ruin them like Michael Flynn and Manafort They’ll tell me what I want to hear.
I would like you to hear this again – if you missed Rosenstein’s comment –

Trump’s Sketchy Cohen Claims…FactCheck.org
By Robert Farley and Eugene Kiely
Posted on November 29, 2018
President Donald Trump went on the attack against Michael Cohen, saying his former personal attorney is a “weak person” trying to avoid jail time by “lying” about negotiations with Russian officials about a possible Trump Tower development in Moscow. But the president twisted several facts in service of his points.
Trump claimed that Cohen is “making up a story,” but there is corroborating evidence — including emails — that supports the version of events that Cohen is now telling prosecutors.
Trump said the Trump Tower Moscow project described by Cohen was “a very public deal” that “everybody knew about” and “was written about in newspapers.” But the public didn’t learn until well into Trump’s presidency that discussions about a tower project in Moscow took place during the campaign.
Trump said Cohen is lying in hopes of getting a reduced sentence for “things that have nothing to do with me.” In fact, two of the charges Cohen pleaded guilty to in August were campaign finance violations related to hush money paid to Stormy Daniels at the direction of Trump…

Trump, the Alt-Right autocrats and the Republican Party have been running a propaganda campaign for several years that is designed to cast doubt on all fact check sites just like Trump wants to cast doubt on the media that doesn’t report what he wants.
If you Google “Who is fact checking the fact checkers” you will run in to some of this crap that was designed to feed the confirmation bias of Trump’s base to erase any doubts that might have. These Trump followers are so willingly blind, they will not fact check the claims from that propaganda that the media fact checkers can’t be trusted.
Once that is planted in their minds, they will dismiss everything they read from media fact check sites that does not match what they are hearing from Trump and the Alt-Right misleading, conspiracy theory media machine.
For that mindless mob, it has become automatic to dismiss everything and only accept what Trump tells them.
However, Real Clear Politics has a Fact Check Review.
Fact Check Review Methodology
“The goal of the RCP Fact Check Review project is to understand how the flagship fact-checking organizations operate in practice, from their claim and verification sourcing to their topical focus to just what even constitutes a “fact.” … (There’s more)
https://www.realclearpolitics.com/fact_check_review_methodology.html
If you want to discover the rankings of the fact check sites, click the link above and scroll down to discover that in the first column, Snopes was 99-percent correct for the previous week, FactCheck.org was 90-percent correct, Politifact was 86-percent correct, the Washington Post was 85-percent correct and the New York Times was 83-percent correct.
Then compare that to Trump’s lies. All of the fact check sites list Trump’s lies and according to Real Clear Politics, the media fact check sites are overwhelming accurate with the truth compared to Trump.
Donald Trump lies. And he is doing a lot more of it lately.
https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/24/politics/donald-trump-lies-mistruth-scaramucci/index.html
But once seduced by Trump, nothing I wrote here will matter to most of those deplorable, ignorant fools — to them, the media is full of fake news and fact check sites are always wrong because that is what Trump and the Alt-Right wants them to think.

Donald Trump Gave Russia Leverage Over His Presidency
By Conor Friedersdorf, The Atlantic
01 December 18
A foreign adversary has possessed potentially damaging information about the president for an extended period of time.
Shortly after President Donald Trump was inaugurated, he gave a combative press conference at which he was asked by a reporter, “I was just hoping that we could get a yes or no answer on these questions involving Russia. Can you say if you are aware that anyone who advised your campaign had contacts with Russia during the course of the election?”
In reply, Trump lied to the American public. “Russia is a ruse. I have nothing to do with Russia. Haven’t made a phone call to Russia in years. Don’t speak to people from Russia,” he said. “… I have nothing to do with Russia. To the best of my knowledge, no person that I deal with does.”
That he lied has long been clear—all sorts of people with whom he dealt had extensive, well-documented dealings with Russia and Russians. But additional evidence that he lied was revealed Thursday during an appearance in federal court by his former attorney Michael Cohen, who admitted that he negotiated on Trump’s behalf to build a skyscraper in Moscow; that his efforts lasted until at least June 2016; that he briefed Trump and members of Trump’s family about the matter; and that he later lied to Congress, to avoid contradicting Trump’s political message.
Consider the implications. At the very beginning of Trump’s presidency, as soon as he lied in that press conference, Vladimir Putin and Russian intelligence possessed the ability to unmask Trump as a liar to the American public, revealing damaging information to Congress and the public about which they had previously been ignorant. BuzzFeed’s account of the negotiations involving a potential Trump Tower in Moscow hints at the wealth of documentary evidence that the Russians would possess to back up their claims.
As it would turn out, that was merely the beginning of their leverage. In September 2017, Donald Trump Jr. gave sworn Senate testimony that may be contradicted by Thursday’s revelations, raising the prospect that the Russians have been in possession of evidence suggesting that the president’s son may have committed a felony. And once Cohen lied to Congress about the matter, the Russians were in a position to expose the unlawful behavior of Trump’s personal attorney.
Those particular bits of Russian leverage over Trump are gone now that Robert Mueller’s investigation has revealed the truth to Congress and the public. But there is so much that we still don’t know about the Trump Tower deal, the president’s role in negotiating it, and the reasons his inner circle took extraordinary legal risks to hide the truth about it.
“The Kremlin knows the answer to these questions,” says Susan Hennessey, a former National Security Agency lawyer, on a Lawfare podcast. “And unless the answers here are the most innocent possible explanations … if it’s anything other than that, the United States is in an incredibly dangerous position, because the United States is in a position where the American president is aware that a hostile foreign adversary potentially has devastating—politically devastating and potentially legally and criminally devastating, if not for him, then for members of his family or organization—that a hostile foreign adversary has that information on him, and those really are the kinds of conditions where your worst nightmare is about blackmail and influence.”…

Poor Trump. He is a crook and now is disturbed.

President Trump is in Argentina for the G20 summit this morning, but a source tells CNN his mood is “terrible” and he’s “spooked and completely distracted.” That’s not too surprising after the latest Russia investigation bombshell: Michael Cohen pleading guilty to lying to Congress. Cohen, the President’s one-time lawyer and “fixer,” had originally said talks between himself and Trump about a proposed Trump Tower project in Moscow ended in January 2016, right before the start of primary season. Cohen now admits that was a lie — and one he told out of a sense of obligation to Trump.
The revelations are significant because they appear to show Trump was engaged in business dealings with Russia in the midst of a campaign in which Moscow interfered to help elect him. In response to all this, Trump called Cohen “a weak person.” Then, he got on Air Force One and promptly canceled his planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G20. Trump still has meetings with a half-dozen other world leaders, including important talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping about trade.

Trump Can’t Control the Process Anymore. It’s Unraveling on Him.
By Charles Pierce, Esquire

Michael Cohen’s latest plea is a sign Robert Mueller is turning the screw.
…Cohen’s guilty plea — his second in four months — is the latest development in a wide-ranging investigation by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Activity in that probe has intensified this week, as one planned guilty plea was derailed and, separately, prosecutors accused Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort of lying to them since he pleaded guilty…Trump has repeatedly said he had no business dealings in Russia, tweeting in July 2016, “For the record, I have ZERO investments in Russia,” and telling reporters in January 2017 that he had no deals there because he had “stayed away.”
It always was about the money. The president* always defined himself by it. It was the comforting myth of his public existence, the fairytale he told himself so he could sleep at night through all the failure and bankruptcy and the whoring after cash, dirty or laundered, all over the world. Take away the money—or, more accurately, the perception of the money—and there simply is nothing left of the man. Take away the money, and he can’t see himself in the mirror. So he would do anything, including imperil his presidency and, therefore, the country, to save himself from the horrible realization that the money was all there was to him and there wasn’t any money anymore.
What the hell? What was the presidency to him but another mirror in which he still could see a man made of money?…
At the same time that Cohen was copping his plea, over in Frankfort, German authorities were raiding the headquarters of Deutsche Bank, the one remaining financial institution willing to lend the president* money…
And Michael Cohen today pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about his—and the president*’s—involvement in a proposal to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. It is about the money. It’s always been about the money.

CIA finds Saudi crown prince sent at least 11 messages to adviser who oversaw Khashoggi killing around time of his death
BY CHRIS MILLS RODRIGO – 12/01/18 08:31 AM EST
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sent at least 11 messages to his adviser, who oversaw the effort to kill Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi, around the time of Khashoggi’s killing, according to a classified CIA report obtained by The Wall Street Journal.
According to the excerpts of the assessment reported by the Journal, the crown prince told associates in August 2017 “we could possibly lure [Khashoggi] outside Saudi Arabia and make arrangements,” if the crown prince could not convince the dissident Saudi journalist, who was living in Virginia, to return to Saudi Arabia.
The Journal noted that it was unclear from the excerpts whether the comments came directly from the crown prince or from someone describing his communications…

I’ve read that Trump once had a HUGE yacht and it was one of those purchases where he got it on the cheap and then sold it for almost four times the amount he paid for it.
And a Sauudia Arabian arms dealer pumped %85 million into it to outfit the vessel with lavish features.
“Mr. Trump bought the Trump Princess, as the well-known yacht is called, for $30 million in 1987 from the Sultan of Brunei, who had secured it as collateral for a multimillion-dollar loan to Adnan M. Khashoggi. …
“In 1989, the Princess was leased by the Trump’s Castle hotel and casino and berthed at an Atlantic City marina. It was used for promotion and entertainment by the Castle and several other Trump enterprises.
“Mr. Trump disclosed on a recent television appearance (back in 1989) that the yacht was cruising the waters of the Far East while he sought a buyer for it.” …
WAIT FOR IT!
“Donald J. Trump has arranged to sell his 282-foot yacht in Japan for about $110 million, Wall Street executives and a lawyer close to the deal said yesterday.”
Is this more evidence of how Trump launders money for shady criminal types and ends up profiting from it?
But this isn’t the end of Trump’s under the table deals with Saudi Arabia.
“Saudi Arabia gave Donald Trump 83 gifts including swords, daggers and artwork of himself”
U.S. President Donald Trump’s ties to Saudi Arabia run long and deep, and he’s often boasted about his business ties with the kingdom.
“I love the Saudis,” Trump said when announcing his presidential run at Trump Tower in 2015. “Many are in this building.”
“The Saudis are funneling money to him,” said former federal ethics chief Walter Shaub, who is advising a watchdog group suing Trump for foreign government ties to his business. That undermines “confidence that he’s going to do the right thing when it comes to Khashoggi. …
“Four years later, the prince came to his rescue again, joining other investors in a $325 million deal for Trump’s money-losing Plaza Hotel.
“In 2001, Trump sold the entire 45th floor of the Trump World Tower across from the United Nations in New York for $12 million, the biggest purchase in that building to that point, according to the brokerage site Streeteasy. The buyer: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”

Congress considers measure to postpone shutdown deadline until after Bush memorial services
Congressional negotiators and White House officials are discussing a one-week budget bill that would delay a partial government shutdown while Washington prepares for the state funeral of former president George H.W. Bush, according to several people briefed on the talks. A final decision has not been made but could come as soon as Sunday, when President Trump returns to Washington. It’s also possible lawmakers could pursue a 10-day or two-week spending bill, depending on how talks proceed.
Funding for numerous parts of the federal government is set to expire at midnight on Friday, but Congress is deadlocked over Trump’s demand for $5 billion in funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Donald Trump’s Worst Deal
The President helped build a hotel in Azerbaijan that appears to be a corrupt operation engineered by oligarchs tied to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
By Adam Davidson
…In May, 2012, the month the Baku deal was finalized, the F.C.P.A. was evidently on Donald Trump’s mind. In a phone-in appearance on CNBC, he expressed frustration with the law. “Every other country goes into these places and they do what they have to do,” he said. “It’s a horrible law and it should be changed.” If American companies refused to give bribes, he said, “you’ll do business nowhere.” He continued, “There is one answer—go to your room, close the door, go to sleep, and don’t do any deals, because that’s the only way. The only way you’re going to do it is the other way.”
Donald Trump has not addressed the Baku deal since becoming President. A Department of Justice spokesperson would not comment on the possibility of its investigating the Trump Tower Baku deal. The White House declined to comment….
In recent months, American officials have expressed concern that Trump Administration figures might be blackmailed by foreign entities. U.S. law-enforcement investigators and congressional staffers have probed claims that Russian government officials possess compromising information about President Trump, which might be used to blackmail him.
The best way to determine if a crime was committed in the Baku deal would be a federal investigation, which could use the power of subpoena and international legal tools to obtain access to the contracts, the due diligence, internal e-mails, and financial documents….
Senator Sherrod Brown, of Ohio, who is the ranking Democratic member of the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, said, in an e-mail, that a federal investigation was warranted: “The Trump Organization’s Baku project shows the lack of ‘extreme vetting’ Mr. Trump applied to his own business dealings in corruption-plagued regimes around the globe. . . . Congress—and the Trump Administration itself—has a duty to examine whether the President or his family is exposed to terrorist financing, sanctions, money laundering, and other imprudent associations through their business holdings and connections.”
More than a dozen lawyers with experience in F.C.P.A. prosecution expressed surprise at the Trump Organization’s seemingly lax approach to vetting its foreign partners. But, when I asked a former Trump Organization executive if the Baku deal had seemed unusual, he laughed. “No deal there seems unusual, as long as a check is attached,” he said…

As the Mueller Probe Heats Up, Donald Trump’s Lies Are Giving Way to the Truth
James Risen
November 30 2018
…Faced with Cohen’s admissions in court on Thursday, Trump at first tried to bully his way out of the corner by saying that Cohen was a “weak person and not a very smart person.” But he quickly switched gears and effectively confirmed what Cohen had said. “There was a good chance that I wouldn’t have won, in which case I would have gotten back into the business, and why should I lose lots of opportunities?”
Trump’s comments show the coarse, cynical approach he takes toward public service. But more ominously for him, they also reveal that he had much deeper connections to Russia in the midst of the campaign than he has ever previously acknowledged. It suggests that Trump will lie about his Russian connections until he realizes he can no longer get away with it, and then will quite casually admit that he has been lying all along….

Trump doesn’t treat people equally. White men feel they’re discriminated against. This poll actually makes Americans look pretty good. Why are racist, bigoted politicians still winning?
…………………………………
Poll asks what makes a ‘real American?’
(CNN)The trait most important to being a “real American” is to believe in treating people equally, according to a Grinnell College poll released on Monday. Offered a list of traits, 90% of respondents said treating people equally is very important, followed by taking personal responsibility for one’s actions (88% said that was very important), accepting people of different racial backgrounds (81%), and supporting the US Constitution (80%).
The least important traits were being a Christian (55% said it was not important), having been born in America (49%), and having lived in America most of one’s life (45%)…
Despite the belief that treating everyone equally makes a real American, most Americans think there’s still a lot of discrimination against certain groups. Fifty-eight percent said that Muslims experience a lot of discrimination living in the US, followed by LGBT people (52%), and African Americans (52%). The least likely groups to experience discrimination, according to the poll, were white men (45%, virtually no discrimination), atheists (37%), and Christians (35%)..
Two-thirds of Americans said that it’s not okay to express feelings of hate in a public manner, including through social media, while the other quarter said it’s okay to do so..
