Newsweek wrote here about a petition that is gathering thousands of signatures, calling for the replacement of Betsy DeVos by LeBron James.
Neither is an educator, but LeBron James has a heart, loves kids, values public education, and has done something great with his life. What he accomplished, he did on his own, not with Daddy’s money.
Of course, Trump would never do it. He has insulted LeBron and called him names, as he insults everyone who is worthier than himself.
Only if the Lakers take DeVos and Pence and give up a future draft pick.
The White House definitely should not trade DeVos to the Lakers. There could be trouble when they play the Memphis Grizzlies. Dribble dribble, bang bang. And the White House should just give up any draft picks. We don’t want this administration thinking about any drafts. Sort of a worst case scenario, that.
I don’t comment often on the Diane Ravitch posts because usually feels like I’m preaching to the choir. But in this case I have to say that the idea to replace one unqualified Secretary of Education with another equally unqualified with the justification that Lebron is a nice guy is a scary thought. Are we really too stupid to adjust the direction of pubic education in a sane and thoughtful. The line of thought that the secretary of education need not be qualified by having experience and studied in the the field is like saying that any woman who has had children is perfectly qualified to be a teacher. Sometimes I think there are just too many hopelessly stupid people. We’re doomed.
Long ago qualifications mattered a lot, now it’s more about agendas.
Nah, not agendas, it’s about celebrity.
and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
$$$$$$ is an agenda.
“Are we really too stupid to adjust the direction of pubic education in a sane and thoughtful.”
Well, considering. . .
. . . no, no, not considering the typo-lol 🙂 . . .
. . . the headline of this post sure seems to point in that direction, eh!
Janet,
Rest easy. It was a silly joke.
From here to Trump. The gradual degradation of American values. From innocence to base corruption.
From Candid Camera to this:

Lebron is not stupid. He knows he is not qualified. The DOE is in a depressed and discouraged place, but Lebron would lift the spirits of all state DOE’s and local districts. It matters not if he doesn’t know the fine details of PL94-142, or of I/D/E/A, but he will appoint someone who will follow the law. And he will get the ‘best people’ to recommend his suuccessor. Within a year, so he has time to get rid of the Voss grifters.
And yet, LeBron has managed to create a real school that addresses real problems better than any other person with real credentials.
I have no expectation that Trump will replace DeVos. She may choose to leave if she gets bored but he will never replace her.
A thousand font size NO!
No, make that a GAZILLION font size NO!
I also have this RADICAL, WAY-OUT-THERE idea, and I think it is going to stun, shock, and disrupt America. In fact, I know it will innovate and flip inside-out the Department of Education, and the culture of American public schools:
Why not appoint a real-life successful teacher from America’s public schools, one who is beloved by staff, administrators, and parents, one who has enchanted children with great, robust learning, who has differentiated instruction, who has build real working relationships with parents to empower them in supporting their child’s education, and one who has taught for at least 20 years in a real public school with a diverse population.
Oh my God!!!!!
Can you imagine?
Then what?
An actual flesh-and-blood pedagogue who has had 3-dimensional ongoing experiences in teaching and learning and one who would be dramatically shaping the educational policies for the nation?
That would mean that education would require a true educator for it to be shaped.
Now WHAT is THAT all about?!!!!!
Is that freaking CRAZY, or what!
What a concept . . . .
Crazy, man . . . . . . !
Robert,
You mean not a governor? Not a rich political hack? You are wild.
Oh yes, wild I am. More wild than a member of the band Iron Maiden.
But in all seriousness, public educators rock, and THEY should replace DeVos and her cabinet.
As much as I would like to see an actual teacher head the DOE, I also hope that it would be someone who has administrative and policy experience. I know plenty of skilled classroom teachers who wouldn’t want the job nor necessarily be good at it.
