Deficits don’t matter when Republicans are in power. As Bruce Bartlett said; they only matter when a Democrat is in the White House. At that point, the Republithugs will even threaten the good faith and credit of the US by refusing to raise the debt ceiling; in order to cut spending on
public goods or social programs
Progressive have to stop wringing their hands about deficits and start talking about raising taxes to pay for the things the American people want and need, from education and healthcare to infrastructure. Obama’s ridiculous debt commission in the middle of the broadest recession since the Great Depression was an absurd cave in. Allowing himself to be held hostage to the gang of thieves for the next 8 years; including when they made the Bush tax cuts permanent. And now Republithugs are in power and the deficits are exploding again as they cut taxes massively again.

They care about police, teachers, firefighters, clean water and air, good reasonable wages – and THEY CARE about people. Period. They care. APPEAL TO THAT.

The Return of the Super-Elite
…Economists Estelle Sommeiller and Mark Price released a paper last week through the Economic Policy Institute titled “The new gilded age: Income inequality in the U.S. by state, metropolitan area, and county.” Their research concludes that, on average, the income of American’s 1 percent is twenty-six times higher than the average of the bottom 99 percent.
When we consider that the bottom 99 percent includes some people who make a huge amount of money — Sommeiller and Price find that a yearly salary of $700,000 in Connecticut puts you in the 99 percent, for example — a picture begins to emerge of a breakaway category of the super-elite, whose personal fortunes dwarf those of even average millionaires…

Another EPI study pointed out the effect that income distribution has had on Social Security. Fifty to seventy-five percent of the shortfall would not exist if income distribution had matched 1983 levels and wages had kept up with productivity gains. Another way to put that is if workers had been paid for increased output. The wide discrepancy in that number is due to the fact those are complementary factors and had workers been paid for productivity than income inequality would not be as great.

CAP’s income inequality reports are window dressing. CAP makes recommendations, while simultaneously sidling up next to the agenda of their funders i.e. no taxes. Case in point- CAP proposed, in its March education paper, no replacement for funding cuts to education. The same report calls for teacher pay at $50,000 (starting) and free student lunches and breakfasts.
Easy rhetoric, doomed to fail, given the political success of Gates and Waltons’ libertarian schemes, which CAP is well aware of. CAP tucked into its report that states should authorize charter schools.

Trump starts a bad trade war with other countries and is now planning to give money to farmers to keep their vote. How much money is this going to cost the US? How wonderful to be in the hands of a failed businessman. Is he going to borrow money from Russia to bail us out?
…….
White House readies plan to extend about $12 billion in emergency aid to farmers caught in Trump’s escalating trade war – Chicago Tribune
…Because the program was created during the Depression, it does not rely on new congressional approval. It allows the CCC to borrow up to $30 billion from the Treasury Department to “stabilize, support, and protect farm income and prices.”
Still, some Republicans several months ago had warned against using the CCC as part of a trade-war related bailout, saying it could distort market forces and pay farmers for products they don’t produce.
Trump is trying to mollify a growing chorus of complaints from Republicans and business groups, who have complained that his trade approach is hurting broad swaths of the economy.
Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said Tuesday he has heard from a number of businesses in his state that the primary beneficiaries of Trump’s tariffs are overseas competitors that aren’t being hit with higher prices on their materials.
Speaking at the Heritage Foundation, Johnson said these trade disputes “could just totally run out of control” and likened them to “throwing a hand grenade of uncertainty” into the economy…

If the US-China trade war escalates, how will the Chinese economy respond? Here are the numbers…South China Morning Post from Hong Kong

However, it has also been announced by the Office of the US Trade Representative that exemptions from the new tariffs for a year may be granted to US importers upon application on a product-by-product basis.
The new tariffs, if fully implemented, will make the imports of the targeted products from China prohibitively expensive, and effectively lead to a complete halt of Chinese exports of such products to the US. As a result, there will be a potential reduction of Chinese exports to the US of up to US$250 billion, or around US$225 billion in FOB (free on board) terms….

Chinese money pours into Brazil as US trade war bites, with US$54 billion across 100 projects..South China Morning Post from Hong Kong
As China and the United States – the world’s top two economies – battle over trade, Beijing has increasingly turned to Brazil to fill the void, pouring money into a diversified portfolio of investments.
Before 2010, Chinese funds flowing into Brazil were primarily focused on assuring food and energy supplies for the Asian giant. But in recent years, that strategy has expanded to include the telecommunications, automotive, renewable energy and the financial services sectors.
And with China now embroiled in an escalating trade war with Washington, Beijing has even more incentive to move closer to Brazil and its other partners in the BRICS group of emerging economies – Russia, India, and South Africa. Investment is likely to be high on the agenda when the group opens its summit on Wednesday in Johannesburg…

As the assembled students began the chant, which references Trump’s longstanding beef with political rival Hillary Clinton, Sessions can be seen laughing and weakly repeating “lock her up.” He didn’t hold back in his speech, either, attacking schools that created “safe spaces” for students after the presidential election. “Through ‘trigger warnings’ about ‘microaggressions,’ cry closets, ‘safe spaces,’ optional exams, therapy goats, and grade inflation,” he said, “actively preventing them from scrutinizing the validity of their beliefs. Many Chinese companies ‘will go bankrupt’, if US delivers on tariff threats, court newspaper warns
South China Morning Post in Hong Kong
China’s judiciary should prepare itself for a possible spike in the number of corporate bankruptcy cases as a result of the trade dispute between Beijing and Washington, state media warned.
In an opinion piece published on Wednesday by People’s Court Daily, Du Wanhua, deputy director of an advisory committee to the Supreme People’s Court, said that courts needed to be aware of the potential harm the tariff row could cause.
“It’s hard to predict how this trade war will develop and to what extent,” he said. “But one thing is sure: if the US imposes tariffs on Chinese imports following an order of US$60 billion yuan, US$200 billion yuan, or even US$500 billion, many Chinese companies will go bankrupt.”
As Chinese courts have yet to have any involvement in the trade dispute, the fact that the newspaper of the nation’s top court, ran an opinion piece – for a judiciary-only readership – suggests concerns might be rising in Beijing about the possible socioeconomic implications of the row…
