This is a hilarious prank played on Donald Trump when he was known primarily as a rich playboy in Manhattan.
“In its short-lived existence, Spy magazine had a lot of fun with Donald Trump. The New York-based monthly is best known for making fun of the size of Trump’s fingers, but its deepest cut may have come as part of a 1990 prank.
“Spy correspondent Julius Lowenthal wanted to know just how cheap some of the city’s richest figures were. So he set up a company, called the National Refund Clearinghouse, and sent letters with checks for $1.11 enclosed, “for services that you were overcharged for.” The letters went out to 58 “well-known, well-heeled Americans,” 26 of whom promptly cashed them. Curious as to how low they might go, Lowenthal sent those 26 “nabobs” a second refund check, for $0.64. This time, 13 people cashed them.”
You can see what’s coming.

It seems I have known Donald Trump all of my life. But what do I know? He is successful and I live in exile far from my native home probably never to return. The moral of the story is this: it is better to be an SOB than a man of honor in today’s world. The man of honor will be taken advantage of and the SOB will take advantage of everyone else. My only consolation is that I think am happier than Mr. Trump in my comfortable library listening to Ralph Kirkpatrick (Mr. Trump has probably never heard of Ralph Kirkpatrick or Ignor Kipnis; I heard them perform and met them).
My father knew of his father from the construction and finance business. All I remember is my father said that Trump senior had very shady business associates. It still seems amazing to me that a five time draft dodger like Trump could be the Commander In Chief. Seems so unfair that Richard Pershing, whom I met at the Pentagon some 50 years ago is lying forgotten in his grave in Arlington. Pershing, the grandson of General Pershing was killed in action in Vietnam. Trump, it seems to me should be ashamed of himself but he won’t be because he has no shame.

Not shame and weird reasoning. The list of other Trump actions includes one in 2005 with assurances the World Trade towers would not have collapsed if they had been built with asbestos–because asbestos does not burn.

Trump spent around $7. so that his son could be a boy scout. Guess he needed the $.13 to cover part of that expense.
Has Trump ever done anything in his life that is worthy of some respect? I agree with Richard Munro, “…he has no shame.” He also has no compassion nor any leadership ability.

You are all not correct about Trump!

Judi: Please elaborate. I am “not correct about Trump”? Anyone who takes children away from parents isn’t good in my book. I also don’t care about a pussy-grabber-in-chief who shows less morality than a porn star. He has had at least 17 women say he grabbed them inappropriately. He bullies and Tweets to run our government. I’d like to have a leader who can speak in complete sentences and has an attention span of over 8 minutes. He has alienated all of our allies, given more money to a bloated military, encouraged tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations which he delightedly signed. This lack of money will increase our deficit by at least $1.5 trillion. He wants our environment to continue to be polluted, encouraging laws that will allow fracking water to be dumped in our streams and lakes. He appointed a Supreme Court judge who just promoted the law so that now workers who are working in terrible conditions can’t have a class action suit against their corporation.
So, tell my why I should appreciate our Great Leader.

Judi: I forgot about the housing practices of the Trump administration’s Ben Carson. Why not put poor people on the streets. Do you really think this is a positive for Trump?

US Lets Public Housing Developments Crumble as a Prelude to Privatization
Eleanor J. Bader, Truthout: The intentional neglect and underfunding of US public housing has led to the deterioration of many housing developments. While some are being demolished, others are being converted to privately owned, mixed-income apartment complexes with only a small percentage reserved for low-income people. The opposite is true in Europe.

BILLIONAIRE PSYCHOSIS: Many people wonder why so many multibillionaires “keep going” after they have amassed more than anyone needs for generations. After buying yachts and gold toilets, what else is there to prove?
Thom Hartmann believes they have severe OCD, mental deficiencies that perceive wealth as a depraved, desperate measure of gratification and competition. But there is also an element of sociopathy, not caring that mass accumulation of wealth takes it out of the working economy for others.
It gets worse though – consider the Waltons, the richest family in the world who pay the lowest wages allowed, and buy policymakers off to lower wages and benefits further. The Waltons could provide healthcare for all their workers by foregoing a fraction of their annual profits, but would rather push it onto taxpayers through welfare. They force all types of retail stores out of business, blackmail distributors and extort suppliers, use sweatshops and kill American jobs.
So what drives these one percenters? Are they okay mentally or sick? The last two popes have declared obscene pursuit of wealth a modern-day “deadly sin” because it’s not just about being successful, it’s intentionally hurting others.

There’s nothing “modern day” about it. The love of money has always been the root of all evils. It’s just that sometimes in history society has been smart enough to protect itself from these money grubbers. We’ve lost that intelligence.

So far, folks are using the anecdote as an opportunity to vent about Trump. But there are so many opportunities (several daily), why pick this one? I admit I’m too darn lazy to deposit the micro-checks one occasionally receives, & it makes me feel bad when I half-on-purpose lose them. I even used to throw out pennies (that now makes me shudder). The moth in the wallet is a friend. (I refuse to replace my decades-old, crumbling wallet, in hopes of enticing one onboard…). This may be the very first thing I’ve learned in 35 yrs of Trump-watching that earns him a skosh of my respect.

My guess is that Trump never saw the checks. He probably had an assistant who opened his mail and it was probably her job to deposit all checks that came in regardless of amount. My boss regularly gets checks ranging from 45 cents to thousands of dollars. They all get deposited.
There are plenty of things to make fun of Trump for, but this isn’t one of them.

Most of the billionaires—or their assistants—threw the check for 13 cents away. It doesn’t pay for a postage stamp.

The Evangelicals are busy praying for Trump and his political followers to win in California. “bring back Jesus”. I really doubt that Jesus believes Trump is a leader to follow. From what I remember, Jesus wanted the poor to be helped, the sick to be cured and the needy to receive compassion. How much does Graham really understand that Jesus stands for helping those in need? Bikers for Christ, Latinos and workers believe Graham’s message. These people are ‘what makes America great’. This is a cult that doesn’t think but they are good followers.

The Evangelical Fight to Win Back California…May 27, 2018 ·
As the primary approaches, Franklin Graham brings Jesus — and a conservative political message — to a state with a vast pool of evangelical voters…
When Mr. Graham reached his third stop, the State Beach Park in Oxnard, nearly 4,000 people showed up, big for a Wednesday night in a working-class city, but less than half of what his appearance drew in Escondido. Before he went on stage, a group called Bikers for Christ, an evangelistic motorcyclist ministry of which Mr. Graham is an honorary member, huddled around him to pray.
Mr. Graham looked out at the crowd, mostly white and Hispanic families, waiting for him in their beach chairs. “People like this out here, that’s what makes America great,” he said quietly, and walked out to the podium to begin his stump speech.
He asked everyone to pray out loud together, specifically for Governor Brown and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, both Democrats, and both Catholics. People began to boo. Mr. Graham caught the energy. “Let’s pray that they get saved, all right? How’s that?” The crowd cheered.
Then, for the next 40 minutes, as the sun set behind him, beyond the sand dunes and into the Pacific, Mr. Graham preached. More than 250 new converts accepted Christ into their hearts that night.
“God bless you,” Mr. Graham told the crowd. “I’ll see you in heaven.”
