Maureen Downey reports that Georgia’s first virtual charter high school will close. It enrolls some 2,000 at-risk students.
What shallow thinkers (the nicest term that comes to mind) concluded that students who were struggling needed to sit in front of computers, rather than getting the time and attention of a trained professional? Were they trying to cut costs? Surely, the deciders did not have the well-being of the students in mind.

All of these online alternatives to education of people by people have proved to be colossal failures. But the Secretary of Education continues to push this crap, ofc, and will continue to do so as long as the money keeps flowing from the silicon valley oligarchs.

The charter school and voucher “deciders” know nothing about the diversity of real humans and challenges that walk into a classroom every day and for every class — challenges that no algorithm and computer program will ever help … but that won’t stop some techy type working for a six-figure income at Facebook, Google, et al from writing another program that he/she will claim works without ever testing it on the wide diversity of challenges.
Imagine an algorithm written to read non-verbal cues in a child’s posture and facial expressions and tone of voice so the computer asks, “Juliet, did you get raped or beaten by your father again this morning? What can we do to help you? And you are acting like you are hungry. Get over it, and do the assignment so when you grow up you will never be hungry.”

They were virtually ignored.
