This is a victory for parents, educators and other citizens who love public schools: The Kentucky Legislature passed a two-year budget that does not include funding for charter schools.
The charter lobbyists are still working the halls, hoping to turn it around, but the clock is running out.
Two Louisville Republicans (where charters are likeliest to open) said they would not support funding charters if public school funding was cut. Public school funding was actually increased, but higher education and other government programs were cut.
Legislators understand that there is only one pot of money, and funding charters means less money for public schools. They may have paid attention to the failure of charters in their neighbor Tennessee, which have been divisive, expensive and ineffective.

Charters have had more than enough time to prove they have the secret sauce. I guess there are a few legislators out there who are willing to act on that fact.

The first charter school opened in 1992. That’s 25 years. Where’s the beef, or the secret sauce?

You can find the buns in the plastic play kitchenette, in the drawer with the other plastic food items.

Great news for Kentucky… for now. Meanwhile the charter vultures have been welcomed to Puerto Rico.

Good to see resistance. Florida has given charters an equal playing field.

To my mind the truly notable argument made by Kentucky teachers that their governor wished to push charter schools using up public school funds, in the process separating kids and making education an unequal proposition — and the fact that the teacher demand that this NOT happen has just been won — are both woefully under-reported in the media. Most “journalists” and big media haven’t touched this at all.

Kudos to the Kentucky legislature for having the guts to do what’s right (backing public education) and not what’s popular with the corporate hotshots (charters)! More states need to follow their lead.
