The students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School are organizing a massive protest demonstration against gun violence in the District of Columbia on March 24.
Do they know who MJD was?
The students are walking in her path.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas would be very proud of her kids.

I agree that the students are honoring the legacy of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, whether deliberately so or not. I hope they have learned about the person fo whom their school was named and the issues she took on when it was “unpopular” to do so, especially if you were a woman.

Thanks for this information. I have been wondering about Marjorie Stoneman Douglas. Students have a great role model. Onward.

A woman beyond her time……her story reminds me somewhat of Rose Wilder Lane.

Dig deeper to discover “THE TEACHER” that taught these students to do what they are now doing.
“Meet the Teacher Behind the Parkland Student Activists”
“Nearly every student from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who has become a familiar face by advocating for gun reform has come from Jeff Foster’s AP U.S. Government and Politics class, NBC News reported.”

Careful. That’s the information that David Coleman used to push his AP product.
I want to add that many of the students have taken DEBATE in junior high and/or high school. Debate has many important benefits, but is usually underfunded and denigrated, if not ignored.

Back on Feb 20th, the children’s activism inspired me to want to know who was Marjory Stoneman Douglas. So I went to Wikipedia and, oh my gosh, it was clear from the get go that the children were channeling Douglas’ spirit and wisdom. Especially Emma Gonzalez, because the name “Emma” means whole or universal and the qualities of wholeness and universality seem such fundamental aspects of Marjory Stoneman Douglas’ wisdom, as they are of other profound systems thinkers’ wisdom such as that of W. Edwards Deming and Russell Ackoff.

Thanks! I knew all about her work with the Everglades, but had no idea about the rest of it. What a great person to name a school after.
