Thanks to Leonie Haimson for this information.
The strike fund helps teachers survive while they forfeit their salaries to be on strike for higher wages and lower healthcare costs.
You can donate to their strike fund here: https://www.gofundme.com/wv-teachers-strike-fund

Thanks for letting us know how we can help. I was hoping NYSUT would have posted something about how to help. So far, no.

NYSUT, AFT, and UFT are nonnegotiably opposed to any type of work stoppages. Unions around the world are known to have necessitated strikes. That’s what unions do, in part. But not in NY. Never look to the current NY unions in education to strike.
Meantime, it’s great to support the West Virginian teachers in whatever way you can.

When most of the AFT Locals in the southern part of NYS have relatively good contracts . Why would they go on strike . Unions in general have become adverse to strikes since Reagan and Caterpillar . I believe there are a few verses in the declaration of independence that refer to the situation . I suspect I have no need to quote them.
The tide might be changing; but do not think that a strike is an easy act or necessarily a winning strategy. 1800 workers in what was formally Time Warner and is now Spectrum Cable are on strike for 11 months over Spectrum’s desire to eliminate their Pension and Health Benefits. While CEO Rutledge was the highest paid CEO in the country at 99 million Their dues and medical bennifits are being covered by an assessment on the other 15,000 members of the Union working in other divisions of the Union like Construction . Is the much larger AFT and NEA willing to ask their members to do the same, for starters!.
The preamble of the NLRA I will post .
The denial by some employers of the right of employees to organize and the refusal by some employers to accept the procedure of collective bargaining lead to strikes and other forms of industrial strife or unrest, which have the intent or the necessary effect of burdening or obstructing commerce by (a) impairing the efficiency, safety, or operation of the instrumentalities of commerce; (b) occurring in the current of commerce; (c) materially affecting, restraining, or controlling the flow of raw materials or manufactured or processed goods from or into the channels of commerce, or the prices of such materials or goods in commerce; or (d) causing diminution of employment and wages in such volume as substantially to impair or disrupt the market for goods flowing from or into the channels of commerce.
The inequality of bargaining power between employees who do not possess full freedom of association or actual liberty of contract and employers who are organized in the corporate or other forms of ownership association substantially burdens and affects the flow of commerce, and tends to aggravate recurrent business depressions, by depressing wage rates and the purchasing power of wage earners in industry and by preventing the stabilization of competitive wage rates and working conditions within and between industries.
Experience has proved that protection by law of the right of employees to organize and bargain collectively safeguards commerce from injury, impairment, or interruption, and promotes the flow of commerce by removing certain recognized sources of industrial strife and unrest, by encouraging practices fundamental to the friendly adjustment of industrial disputes arising out of differences as to wages, hours, or other working conditions, and by restoring equality of bargaining power between employers and employees.
So back to the Declaration . “The French Aristocracy never saw it coming ” And the Politburo never expected the Army to hold their fire.

If there are no teachers, there is no education. That’s a fact. A state unwilling to pay a decent living wage to teachers will have shortages as teachers go to states where they can support a family.
Before you complain about teachers on strike, please let me know your annual income.
