Arthur Goldstein, a high school teacher in Queens for many years, is ready to take the Chancellor’s job. He has an agenda.
“That’s right, I am volunteering to be Chancellor of NYC Schools, and I won’t accept the 385K. I will do it for half that. That’s appropriate because my first action will be to halve the salaries of everyone and anyone who worked under Bloomberg. If they don’t take the hint, they’re fired.
“We will also turn around the rating system. We will design tests for all educational administrators. We are through with all this effective and ineffective stuff, and Danielson, on her own recommendation, will be out of the classroom for good.
“Administrators will be tested to determine whether they are Not Insane. That will be our highest and only rating. If they miss the rating, they will join me in the 50% pay cut. If they don’t like it, they can always leave, and we will all be better off.
“Next, we will settle the UFT Contract. UFT members get a 20% pay raise across the board. Non-UFT members will no longer be covered by the contract, but we will give all of them $15 an hour, because minimum wage is too low, even for those too selfish or shortsighted to join a union.
“Class size in high schools will fall to 25, as per C4E. At other levels, we will follow the C4E mandates. Any administrators with oversized classes will be personally fined $1,000 a week for each student in each oversized class. If DOE grants them exceptions, their fines will be halved. We are reasonable.”
Why not?

Love it! Union members get raises and nonunion members get pay cuts. Love. It.

385k? Did the Chancellor get a raise or something? I thought it was low 200s.

It was going to be 353, according to this. I wrote this pretty fast, right before a meeting. https://nypost.com/2018/03/01/de-blasio-defends-new-school-chancellors-salary/

Yes, Arthur Goldstein, from toiling in a trailer, fighting for teachers against admin and their own union and walking across desks to Schools Chancellor! All the boxes are checked, but it will be difficult to maintain his posturing as the craziest person in the room!

Actually having English Language classes for English Language Learners – what a novel idea. You must be some kind of genius. You would have my vote if it counted. However, I’m only a NYC teacher. This, the mayor’s wife has more say in choosing the next chancellor of the largest school district in the nation.

In fairness, RL, it was NY State that came up with Part 154, and that’s what’s keeping ELLs from the instruction they need. I’m still trying to get that fixed, but it’s a tough slag.

Wonderful, but on behalf of many in Ohio, please consider moving here. We have a bunch of people who need to be removed from positions of power in education. Right now the Governor wants to put public education together with workforce development and in his office, so businesses can determine what they want from “their” schools. The public and professionals in education be damned. And of course the businesses want tax breaks for anything they can rationalize as economic development. That includes a takeover of public education, including higher education. The Governor wants higher education to document how every program contributes to the economy of Ohio–otherwise, the program is nothing but a drag on the economy. This is Governor Kasich who still hopes to be US President.

As I mentioned on Arthur’s blog, his chances are limited because he has not received Eva Moskowitz’s stamp of approval, which apparently is now a requirement for appointment as Chancellor.

Got my vote, Arthur. Where do I sign up for your campaign?
One of the essential weaknesses to Carmen’s tenure, to my view, is that the under and unqualified admins remained at their posts. And many of them still kept the Bloomberg manual on their desks as a guide.
So yes, Arthur: time to put the “accountability” onus on the admins.

I can tell you that’s absolutely true. I’ve been to five step two grievance hearings in the last month for things that are black letter violations of contract, I haven’t heard back on any yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bloomberg step two folks sent all to arbitration.

I’d prefer to be an expensive consultant. You can fly me in on a bi-monthly schedule for a day or two and put me up in an expensive hotel. I’ll only charge $15,000 per consultation.
