Alan Singer reviews the New York Times list of failed corporate reformers to replace Carmen Farina.
John King? Chased out of New York State.
Jaime Aquino? In charge of the iPad disaster in Los Angeles.
John White? Tool of rightwing former Governor Bobby Jindal.
Has beens.
Hey, Bill, find someone who believes in public schools.

Infuriating!

So, the Paper of Record is feeling nostalgic for all those school closings, corruption (which went virtually unreported by the Times, but was rampant), demonization of teachers, elevation of vicious, arrogant know-nothings to positions of power, attempts at monetizing children’s data, reduction of the UFT to company union status, and on and on…
Perhaps this (and cheer leading for war in Irag masquerading as reporting, etc.) is why Trump’s claims of “Fake News” have traction.
Lies, disinformation and self-deception, everywhere you look…

The NY Times editorial board has always been in the tank for certain charters — the richest networks who got special privileges from the Bloomberg administration.
This editorial reminds me of Eva Moskowitz’ list:
https://www.chalkbeat.org/posts/ny/2017/12/21/to-succeed-carmen-farina-her-adversary-eva-moskowitz-nominates-14-education-leaders-from-across-america/
The LAST person I’d trust to tell me who would make a good NYC Chancellor is the woman who told me that Betsy DeVos was a fabulous choice and would make a great Secretary of Education. Talk about the worst recommendation ever.
The NY Times editorial board didn’t demonstrate the same truly awful judgement about DeVos that Moskowitz did when she showed her extreme love and adoration for Betsy DeVos and decided it was her moral duty to demand that DeVos be confirmed by the Senate. Even the pro-charter NY Times editorial board couldn’t stoop as low as Moskowitz did to endorse DeVos. But the NY Times board clearly wants someone in NYC who will return to the Bloomberg days when the poorest and most vulnerable public school children were robbed of their funding to subsidize the richest charter CEOs and the students they chose to be worthy of their largesse.

Here is a look at the results of what Klein, and Bloomberg have done to NYC schools, by removing the most experienced teachers who know WHAT LEARNING LOOKS LIKE, so that ‘reform’ advocates could deform the schools, and privatization could move in. I would trust one the current Regents to take over the leadership since some of them are career educators with stellar qualifications. I know that Judy Johnson is a leader. She is smart, hard working, a good speaker and listener. I had the opportunity to work closely with her some years ago. She cares about young people and equity. As Singer stated, I may not always agree with her on everything, but I know she can be trusted to support strong public schools. To be fair I haven’t worked with her in many years, but she was supportive of standardized testing in those days. Her position may be different now that we have witnessed the harmful impact of it. She would make an excellent, trustworthy replacement for Farina. New York should look to the future, not the past failed policies.

The mayor of NYC Bill diblasio is the man who will be making the decision of who is the next NYC schools chancellor not the NY Times and not eva moskowitch – It is hysterical to think that these type people actually think that the mayor would be listening to them.
The mayor of NYC Bill diblasio is a true supporter of public education and he cannot stand non union charter scab schools especially charters run by the person who seems to have lots of warts on the face. So, expect a new chancellor who hates charters and will do everything possible to rid charters in NYC and make their lives miserable because all they are doing is corrupting NYC schools by constantly crying about taking over space in our NYC school buildings.

Does micromanaging ever work? It seems ed reform is committed to this idea.
A chancellor that attracted bright teachers, supported them regarding classroom management and gave them autonomy to teach as they saw fit, and removed high-stakes from the tests, would bring about a renaissance of NYC schools. I bet test scores, even on these dubious tests, would go up.

Don’t forget Shael Suransky, with whom I had personal experience in the Bronx. He was the handpicked “UFT Chapter Leader” of a ” high school” located in a PAL facility. No library, No science labs (or science classrooms either for that matter). His job was to rubber stamp any administrative actions of the Principal-Santiago Taveras-who was in charge of this fraud. How he rose to a post of importance at the DOE and them a college president still leaves all of us to wonder amid our disbelief.
