Parents in Alachua County in Florida have created an organization to fight the opening of a for-profit charter school run by Charter Schools USA in their community.
Their organization is called Parents Against Corporate Takeovers (PACT).
The charter will drain students and money from their local community public schools.
In addition to hurting public schools, the new charter will have poor oversight, located far from Gainesville. If parents have complaints, they will be told, “choose another school if you don’t like it here.”
Charters have a poor track record in Florida:
“Despite consistent growth by charter schools in Florida, the schools have lagged on quality, diversity and innovation. The CSUSA school proposal admits: ‘Achievement among CSUSA schools that serve a student population similar to ACS’s projected demographic is, on average, lower than both the state and Alachua County’s net average proficiency in math, science and social studies.’,
This is an excellent development and should be duplicated in every town and city in America infected by the disease known as charter schools. Jeb Bush should be run out of Florida for the incredible damage he has done to public education.
Incredible and, more and more, what looks like irrevocable damage done by Jeb Bush.
Jeb Bush and his foundations FEE and FFF are responsible for the damage causd in other states as well. It wasn’t good enough for him to ruin the education for our kids in the state of FL – he ensured his ludicrous and harmful policies have been rolled out-nationwide ( mandatory 3rd grade retention, fraudulent school grading, tying teacher evaluations to the state test making it extremely high stakes, etc). Bush needs to be run out of FL s absolutely correct and too bad we can’t make that a realit. He is so despised in this state – no one has any respect for him.
We need to see more than just fighting charter schools although its a great start. Parents and teachers nationwide need to fight for the restoration of education and remove all the experimental ed reforms pushed by both political parties and corporations. Everyone deserves an education of opportunity
Inform yourself knowledge is power and let your politicians know how you feel about ed reform
