Dora Taylor writes in “The Progressive” about the disadvantages of tax credit, aka vouchers.
1. Education tax credits deplete state budgets, diverting money from public schools to private and religious schools.
2. Education tax credit programs benefit the rich.
3. Education tax credit programs are risky for students because the private and religious schools are not covered by federal civil rights laws.
4. Education tax credits underwrite religious indoctrination.
Is this what Americans want? No public referendum has ever supported vouchers.
Most Americans do not want this, but do we have a choice now that the racist, fascist, autocratic kleptocracy is acting like the war is over and they have won?
How many people in power who are still in a position to make a difference in the United States are standing up to stop this battle tank from crushing everyone, even to the point of driving the human race and most life on the planet to extinction?
off-topic. Trump describes as “research”, illegally obtained information given to his team by the Russian government. Is there any reason to expect Trump appointees like DeVos to be anything more than low-life scum?
Is #1 universally true? I have wondered if voucher money comes from a state’s regular education budget or if it is additional.
I don’t know of any money for vouchers that comes from a difference source unless a state court insists on it. If a state plans to spend $40 million on vouchers, it comes from money that would otherwise have gone to public schools. To my knowledge, courts in Louisiana and Nevada have told legislators to find another source.
