Bill Moyers’ website had this story this morning.
“When Donald Trump was going through litigation related to a hotel bankruptcy in 2009, a lawyer representing clients who were suing Trump received an ominous phone call. If you keep bothering Trump, a caller who identified himself as Carmine told the lawyer, “we know where you live and we’re going to your house for your wife and kids.” Police traced that call to a payphone across the street from a theater where Trump was appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman. Jason Leopold reports for Buzzfeed.”
Read it yourself. The language violates the guidelines of this blog. It is about character. It will please his base.

No surprise there. Trump has a long history with not only the New York mob families but Russian mobsters and it is no secret that he admires thugs and dictators like Hitler, Putin, etc.

From the article:
“Five days after the phone call, the FBI agent checked back with Hansen, who told the agent that he hadn’t received any “related” calls. The agent’s notes state that the phone call was “not of a sufficiently threatening nature to be pursued to prosecution,” and there also wasn’t enough evidence “that would prove the content of the telephone call.” So the bureau decided to take “no further action” until “more information is revealed” or Hansen received another threatening phone call.”

Thank you, Duane for the update. As usual the media over hyped this.

I am no fan of the Salmon* Swamp Monster who epitomizes just about everything that is wrong with this country-ignorance masquerading as intelligence, Mammon worshiping toadies, me me me me aesthetic, etc. . . .
At the same time there is no difference to me with hyper-hyped alt-news whether from the right or left side of the political spectrum. Fake news is fake news and should be no news.

April,
How is this “overhyped”? The media REPORTED it. Are you saying that the fact that there is a pattern of Trump’s men threatening his enemies (which is a crime) should be covered up?
In fact, what is most concerning here is that the FBI did not seem to try to interview anyone in the Trump organization or dig to see if there WAS a bodyguard present at the taping.
Once the FBI learned that this direct threat to stop bothering Trump came from a payphone across the street from the building where Trump and his minions were present their response should have been to investigate.
When you have evidence of wrong-doing, you don’t say “let’s see if it happens again and if it doesn’t, we won’t bother to investigate”. Certainly that was nothing like the FBI turning over every leaf to find any wrongdoing by Hillary Clinton.
But it sure does remind me of the kind of “investigation” the FBI did when they learned about the crime that the DNC servers were being unknowingly hacked. They left a message at the IT help desk voice mail. Which sound remarkably like the kind of investigation they did here. When you are the organization who is supposed to police crimes but you are only really interested in finding crimes against Demcrats, you get cursory pseudo-investigations when powerful Republicans break the law, and outrageous “no expense spared let’s subpoena every document” investigations when you are desperately to imply a Democrat broke the law. And that kind of FBI is a great danger to democracy. Anyone who doesn’t understand this is not looking closely at how Putin’s version of the FBI is used to target enemies and cover up crimes of friends.
Calling this “fake news” is the kind of right-wing troll attacks that hope to convince Americans there ARE no facts that can ever be determined. So just sit back and let Trump be Trump.

I would not like to get that phone call, even if there was no follow up later. How can you be sure nothing will happen?

I wouldn’t either. One can’t. And the lawyer did the right thing and got law enforcement involved. What else could he have done? They provided protection for a few days to make sure there was no immediate follow up. The world those folks live in is quite far removed from the one I grew up in and still live in.

What could have been done?
The FBI could have talked to the Trump people present at the taping. They could have checked what transportation they took to see if they could learn who was present, or asked the staff of The Late Show. They could have checked what calls were made before or after that threatening phone call from that payphone. They could have recorded Trump staff/body guard voices to see if the lawyer recognized anyone.
You don’t say “well a crime was committed but we will not investigate unless that crime happens again” now that we learn that the threat could be connected with Trump given the location and time of the call. That isn’t policing. That is corruption.

But some of those leaving are retiring to a warmer place–Flori-DUH!

Judge him by the company he keeps: Roy Cohn, Putin, Erdogan, Duterte, Sisi… He has the soul of a dictator. I’m waiting for the day he puts in one good word for democracy. How can one call oneself an American and support his guy? Oh, it’s because our schools have been too busy teaching faux reading skills to bother explaining what America is really about. Progressive teachers: wake up and consider the fact that our skills curriculum is part of the problem here.

Based on Trump role-playing a PR person in the past, I would not put him past him to pose as the stereotypical “Carmine” and make the threatening call himself.

This kind of activity is consistent with that of all dictators.
