Rahm’s big idea about requiring that high school students have a college acceptance or a military enrollment or a specific job or they can’t graduate was not his own. It was suggested to him by…..guess…three guesses….one guess: Arne.
Between the two of them, they have had charge of the Chicago Public Schools for 16 years. How, exactly, have they reformed the schools and made them better for students? Other than closing public schools (Rahm did that to 50 in a single day, which ought to be the first line in his Wikipedia entry) and Arne was first to close public schools for turnarounds (some of his original turnarounds have also been closed), what has changed for most students?

In Ohio the Governor and the legislature have been tinkering with graduation requirements. Now they are panic mode. Someone credible estimated that about one-third of all kids who should graduate on time will not, and that is about the same for public and for charter schools. Kasich is also now infamous for wanting to require every teacher to spend a professional development day job-shadowing a business person. Teachers suggested that the legislators and Governor Kasich should job-shadow one teacher all day and through grading assignments. Arne and Rahm are made for each other.

Arne should shadow Rahm shadowing Arne …
Every day.
Neither would learn anything, of course, but if they were locked in a mutual shadow dance, they would be too preoccupied to cause any trouble for anyone else.

Another make work meaningless idea that will not work. Is this fantastical idea going to greatly inspire the struggling student or make him so greatly fear not getting his diploma ? Reform ? Let us put all of education on a win – lose/ crime punishment/ reward system so those in the loser ranks can just feel more shitty about themselves. I am so done with Arnie and Rahm and their denseness. ( sorry I said shitty, diane, but it was the word that fit)

This is one of the dumbest ideas I have ever heard .

You’ve heard the myth about the earth resting on the back of a 🐢, which rests on another bigger 🐢…
With Arne Duncan, it’s
“Worst ideas all the way down”
Arne’s worst idea
Is resting on another
And what is very clear
Is that one had a mother

And what happens to those who do not get an acceptance letter? How about those kids in jail, waiting for their court date but getting a CPS hs education?

What you wrote.
A clear example of how rheephormsters not only label to punish, but ensure that there are many many losers—
Except, of course, for THEIR OWN CHILDREN.
From Lakeside School [Bill Gates & children] to U of Chicago Lab Schools [the children of Rahm Emanuel and Arne Duncan]—apparently they haven’t gotten the MandateFromOnHigh.
Wonder why?

Words almost fail me. What a stupid idea. Will they provide jobs or college scholarships for those who don’t choose the military or will they draft them. How much do they plan to spend on these kids’ life-long high school careers? Perhaps they have a few friends investing in private prisons waiting for the non-graduates to commit some misdemeanor.
I suspect the latter is the most likely.

Both are nuts, and on power trips. They really are pathetic. The Chicago teachers, parents, citizens, and students should tell them: Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot and shun them. Why did Rahm-boo get elected? This is another reason why Dump is potus. Save this country, God.

I was thinking Gates when I read the headline, but on the other hand, who’s ever seen Arne speak while Gates was drinking a glass of water?

I didn’t know robots needed to drink water.

Arne shouldn’t have been in a position to rip off and exploit students and taxpayers. He should have been working at United.

I was convinced that Arne was the worst we could ever have (and him being named SOE is the LARGEST burr in the butt that I have with PRESIDENT OBAMA), until Betsy came along.
So tell me, how is one “terrible” Sec. of Ed. gonna’ make things right for a new, even worse Secretary?
It’s the “lesser of two evils” puzzle, and it’s a game being played with the kids of our nation as well as the future of them and us!!!!

The tech tyrants’ wives have made a cottage industry out of “improving” the schools of the ‘poor folk’s kids’. If Mrs. Gates and the widow Jobs have a skill to share, it’s “How to get a rich man to marry you.”

important point: It is Mrs. Gates who appears to be most sure that so many, many teachers are both distastefully and untenably “bad.”

Mrs. Gates is a leech. She lives in the state with the most regressive tax system in the nation. The poor pay a rate up to 7 times the rate the rich pay in the state of Washington.

There are so many holes in this expectation. Who is going to pay for the next “required” stage of schooling? What about students who have disabilities or are seriously ill? What if they want to take a gap year?
As a parent I would be incensed if my child earned a diploma and did not receive it due to ridiculous expectations which are actually none of the governments business.
Rahm has been a major disappointment. Perhaps we should rename him Caligula.
