In 2013, long before Trump decided to run for president, he signed a lease with the federal government to renovate a beautiful and historic building called the Old Post Office near the White House and convert it to a luxury hotel. The lease prohibits any elected official from participating in the profits of the venture.
Given the unambiguous language of the lease, it seemed certain that Trump would sell it to another hotel operator. After all, foreign dignitaries might book space there as a way to curry favor with the president. It would appear to invite graft.
Trump decided he would not give up the lease.
A few days ago, the General Services Administration issued a lengthy opinion concluding that Trump’s control of the hotel was not a conflict of interest. Besides which, the property was producing revenue. So what’s a conflict of interest when money’s being made?
“Government officials overseeing the Trump International Hotel’s lease with the federal government have determined the deal is in “full compliance” despite a clause in the agreement barring any “elected official of the government of the United States” from deriving “any benefit.”
“In a Thursday letter to Eric Trump, the president’s son now overseeing the hotel, the project’s contracting officer found the company met the terms of the lease because the president had resigned from a formal position with the company and the organization had restructured an internal operating agreement so he received no direct proceeds from the D.C. hotel business while in office.
“In other words, during his term in office, the president will not receive any distributions from the trust that would have been generated from the hotel,” said the contracting officer, Kevin M. Terry.
“Terry also praised the project for turning a partly empty government office building into a hotel that had already generated $5.1 million for the government by the time it opened in the fall.
“Thus the lease turned a building that had been costing taxpayers millions of dollars per year into a revenue-generating asset,” Terry wrote.
“The announcement by the General Services Administration allows Trump’s company, which he still owns, to continue to benefit from a contract ultimately overseen by his administration, a situation that ethical experts have called unprecedented and a conflict of interest that puts the president’s personal financial situation ahead of taxpayers.
“Trump signed a 60-year lease for the government-owned Old Post Office Pavilion on Pennsylvania Avenue in 2013, then spent more than $200 million turning the project into a luxury hotel.
“Since the election, Democrats on Capitol Hill have constantly pressed the agency to address concerns raised by Trump’s profiting from the lease deal.
“Reps. Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.) and Peter A. DeFazio (D-Ore.) sharply criticized the decision, saying the GSA’s decision rendered the lease provision “meaningless” and relied on news articles and corporate language to justify its ruling.
“This decision allows profits to be reinvested back into the hotel so Donald Trump can reap the financial benefits when he leaves the White House,” they wrote. “This is exactly what the lease provision was supposed to prevent.”
“Since Trump took office, GSA officials and Trump Organization representatives have been negotiating changes to the company’s corporate structure and landed on an agreement in which the president would still profit from the hotel but not receive those profits until he leaves office.”
The Old Post Office Building was not dilapidated. It housed several small federal agencies, including the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for Humanities. Just two of the agencies Trump wants to eliminate.
By the logic of the contracting officer, Kevin Terry, every federal office building should be turned into condos, shopping malls, and hotels to generate revenues, instead of costing taxpayers millions by using them for government functions.
Trump continues to shatter tradition with every passing day.

Unbelievable.

It is beyond shocking to see how much law breaking Trump is getting away with…and it is not only ALLOWED by our government, but as with this GSA case, it is CONDONED.
One can only wonder how far along the Fascistic push is within our government if Trump continues to mangle our laws of the land and is given carte blanche to do so. He has broken the Emoluments Clause multiple and on-going times, and yet no one, no Dems, no Repubs, challenge that. Now he says “he cannot be sued in civil court, much less in criminal court.” He is a full fledged Dicatator it would seem, beyond any control. Is everyone so afraid of the Russian Mafia connection as Diane posted yesterday? Are they threatening mayhem to our legislators?
Where is the outrage? Why do both Repubs and Dems and US DoJ and other oversight Government agencies protect him and those of his chose underlings who are proven accessories to his outlaw behaviors?

Hi Ellen:
As you acknowledge that communist, terrorist and fascist have the same strategy of “PUMP and DUMP” by threat of killing innocent, naive, and gullible people for their greed, power and control, what could “peon”people like MOST of readers in this forum could do?
The only hope is to educate and cultivate public to be grassroots citizens, but NOT to be narrow-minded like Trump supporters or NOT TO BE dangerous nationalists, Nazi-like.

Venezuela has taken a major step toward one-man rule, as the Supreme Court dissolved a legislature full of critics of the president
Thursday, March 30, 2017 5:48 PM EDT
Venezuela took its strongest step yet toward one-man rule under the leftist President Nicolás Maduro, as his loyalists on the Supreme Court seized power from the National Assembly in a ruling late Wednesday night.
The ruling effectively dissolved the elected legislature, which is led by Mr. Maduro’s opponents, and allows the court to write laws itself, experts said.

Why should teachers teach logical consistency if it doesn’t apply to our laws anymore?
Many passages of Gibbon’s The Fall of the Roman Empire are coming to mind. I know we need to resist and engage, but I’m seriously doubting if this country has capacity to survive the next few years. We are in the first phase of the most serious crisis since the Civil War (as most of us still call it).

Yes, Greg…both Gibbon’s and Wm. Shirer’s Rise (and Fall) of the Third Reich are text books for today. Almost word for word, we have lost democracy and have rapidly advancing Fascism imposed on us as these historians have shown. Throw in Das Kapital and Mein Kampf and there is a clear map to follow the Trump government ascension.

Yes.
And this tells you that the GSA is open to other “negotiations.”
“Since Trump took office, GSA officials and Trump Organization representatives have been negotiating changes to the company’s corporate structure and landed on an agreement in which the president would still profit from the hotel but not receive those profits until he leaves office.”
This is what the “art of the deal” looks like with the GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTING OFFICE.
Heaven help us if the same wheeling and dealing is going on with the FBI and NSA.

It seems like conflict of interest is not a thing worth investigating & punishing any longer. I don’t think prosecutors even bother to enforce COI & haven’t for many years. Consider the massive conflicts in the 2008 world financial system melt-down involving short-selling, insider trading, economists, hedge fund managers, etc. were ignored or missed.

Off topic here a bit but I was watching the Ellen Degeneres show yesterday – I normally never watch this dumb show but something intrigued me to watch yesterday. The principal from a charter school in Brooklyn was being celebrated by “Ellen” as some sort ot Utopian miracle school!!! At the end of the segment the creepy Koch Bros. donated $25000 to the principal because the principal said the school graduates 80 percent of their students. I could not help to think how this episode fools the average viewer – parent to thinking how great charter schools are!!
So, I did some research. Turns out the school had a population of 300 kids and so divide that by 4 for each grade level and you get a graduating class of 75. Then their claim of 80 percent graduation means out of the 75 kids 53 graduated. A miracle school graduating 53 kids?? Mind you, then I went and read the reviews for the school and as usual the remarks were astonishing as parents were trashing this school to no end claiming the staff are all newbies still going to college, administration tries to instill brainwashing, teachers get paid as low as 30k per year,, bla bla bla. Amazing to me how the school was presented as this intellectual educational wonder and the best yet was that the school was called a charter school yet on their website the school is called a “Public Charter School” yet dopey Ellen calling it a charter school!!

—Ellen has done this same routine before, glorifying some principal, teacher, or school to the great enthusiasm of her audience, sometimes with tears of gratitude from the recipients and with “Oh isn’t Ellen de Generous one” from the audience. She is like Oprah with give-aways. She always has cameras around to show kids jumping with glee and screaming. I hope somebody can do an intervention with Ellen, her producers, and people who line up “talent” and targets for her show.

So now it’s okay to receive rewards that result from conflicts of interest, as long as there is a delay in claiming the ill-gotten gains? Unfricking real.
Every time Trump gets away with this kind of I thing, we should expect to see more of Trump’s muscle flexing. That’s because from the get-go, this man has been intent on emulating fascists like those in Russia, North Korea, China, etc., right down to his request for a demonstration of military might, as seen in places like Red Square, because Trump asked for a parade of tanks and missile launchers during his inauguration. The request was denied, and then he claimed he didn’t ask for that. However, a Freedom of Information Request of Pentagon emails from Huff Post proved the lie. Donald’s first real deal for all of us and with the full backing of all the republicans in both houses is to allow our internet providers to sale our complete browsing history and not give us one copper penny or even get our consent and are not even required to inform us who they sale it to! How’s that for socialism? The ruling party just took ownership of every online citizen in this nation personal browsing history and possibly foreign persons too and traded it to those that help keep them in power (our corrupting internet providers and their big donors). The government suddenly takes ownership of our intellectual property of our personal tract of self-development education, health searches, business investigations and relationships. Now what kind of ART OF THE DEAL IS THAT???? I CALL THAT A THIEVES DEAL. That is when others take what is yours and they get something for it (like campaign donations) and then after the DON AND CO. stole our stuff to they fence it to (in this case our internet providers) to resell to everyone that they choose with no royalties or payment to those that created the self-funded history tract ….and get this WE ARE PAYING THEM …..ALL OF THEM AND NOT JUST A FEW CENTS>>>>SLICK DEAL DON SURE COULD MAKE IT AT A JUNK CAR YARD!!!! We could also take on the idea of slave labor here…We work for free to create things for AT&T to market or…. no…. not for free… WE pay THEM to be able to do this for them … even far worse then going to Walmart and being their unpaid checker and bagger and then getting accused of being a thief by old people at their door after you paid them 200 dollars to walk out of that door with stuff. HELLO WAKE UP OUT THERE AND CALL OL DON AND LET HIM KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OF THAT DEAL!!!!!TODAY because tomorrow they plan to take the whole open Internet concept and let our Internet providers make all they money they can on that as well…It’s called getting rid of net neutrality. Net neutrality is the concept that the users of the WEB usually pay to get onto the connection of the web…a pipeline and after that those users go where they choose without interference unless something illegal is going on. That is very simply what the WEB and the Internet is about and what has allowed it to become such a powerful tool for everyone. We could begin to build our own publicly owned web just like we could pay to build our own library and school.
