Mercedes Schneider comments here on the Senate GOP decision not to move forward with Hanna Skandera as Assistant Secretary of Education for Elementary and Secondary Education because of her Common Core love.
Skandera is a protege of Jeb Bush. She was deputy commissioner of education in Florida.
Since she took the job in New Mexico, despite lacking the statutory requirement of real education experience, she tried to impose the “Florida model” of charters, virtual charters, A-F grading, high-stakes testing and VAM. COmmon Core was part of the Florida model.
There is something ironic here.

Skandera doesn’t allow teachers to be sick, The teachers have an evaluation system that penalizes them for taking more than three sick days even though they are permitted ten days. The legislature voted overwhelmingly with bipartisan support to allow teachers to take their sick days. Governor Susanna Martinez vetoed this bill along with the budget to fund our schools. I don’t understand how they get away with punishing sick teachers for taking sick days with the ADA and Family and Medical Leave Provisions.

What mean people.
And you would think that parents would be screaming about this and would want their children’s teachers to stay home when sick. Just what you want, a sick teacher infecting your child.
Skandera and Martinez, two incredible loathsome individuals.

Numerous districts do this without many of us knowing ever about them. The amount of harassment and bullying that goes on with administration who are, yes, quite “mean” and their staff is really mind boggling.
I’m going to go and make some Ravitch Mind-Soothing Chicken Soup right now!

Well, according to Chris Christie, teachers should get sick only in the summer when they have 6 months off. snark

For the people of New Mexico it is a shame that Skandera is not leaving. It only took six months of her demonstrating her lack of education skills and leadership to know that we had been given a raw deal deal by Governor Martinez and the GOP. Skandera’s appointment by Martinez was payback to the GOP for helping get Martinez elected. It has been down hill ever since and does not look to get any better of the next year and a half. Skandera, like Martinez, is vindictive. She will take this rebuke by the GOP out on the School Districts, primarily on the Teachers.

And the best administrators pull you aside & say, “You never do this, but take a mental health day & sleep in or get a facial, but do something for yourself for once – we need you to stay as good as you are!”
