Texas legislators became suspicious when the letters began pouring advocating for vouchers. Some investigation revealed that they were fraudulent.
“Several members of the House have received hundreds of fraudulent letters addressed from constituents asking them to vote for education savings accounts.
“State Rep. Drew Springer, R-Muenster, was suspicious when his office fielded 520 letters between mid-February and mid-March from constituents of his rural district, who are more likely to oppose private school choice than support it. All the letters were addressed from Austin and had the full names and addresses of each constituent at the bottom.
“Springer started making calls. “We talked to a couple of dozen constituents. No one knows where they’re coming from. None of them agree with the positions that they’re even taking,” he said. He knows of about 10 other representatives who got similar letters.
“One of Springer’s letters was addressed from former state Rep. Rick Hardcastle, who vacated the seat currently held by Springer about six years ago. “I don’t believe in vouchers of any kind,” Hardcastle said Monday. “It ought to be illegal…representing me for something I have no interest in supporting or helping.”
“Sue Dixon, a public school teacher in Gatesville for the last 20 years, got a call from state Rep. JD Sheffield’s office asking whether she had sent a letter lobbying her representative to vote for vouchers.
“I said, ‘Absolutely not!'” Dixon said. “I’m upset that someone would hijack my views.”
“Sheffield, a rural conservative from Gatesville, said he had received about 550 of those letters.”

It seems they are taking their cue from the Russian methodology of waging cyber-war. I hope these people are up for a class-action lawsuit.

I am not surprised at the dis-information campaign. It indicates the high stakes of big-money interests in the legislation. These unethical tactics in advancing the legislation will appear to be tame if the legislation does pass. It is an open invitation to fraud, waste, abuse, and profit-taking irrespective of the quality of education students receive.

Why is it that conservatives, even of the evangelical stripe, consider lying perfectly okay? Is it because they are doing god’s work?

Steve Ruis: It seems so–I guess if you are “doing God’s work” you can ignore Jesus’ teachings, but also, you can separate the ends you and God want from the means you use to get there.

Dear Texas Legislatures,
Thank you for digging into this scam.

This is very serious. The FBI should be asked to look into who did this.

This behavior is not surprising as privateers have a penchant for lying, cheating, cherry picking, manipulating and stacking the deck to get their way. This is what we get when we introduce a market based approach to education. The end appears to justify the means.

Alas. Retired teacher is right, I think. Many on the ed reform bandwagon have lost any sense of morals or ethics. They will lie, cheat, and steal (votes) to get what they want. No one, and nothing, matters if it gets in their way of privatizing schools and absconding with tax dollars. Truly appalling

Anything goes in “ed reform” land… I was at a protest at Brooklyn Tech several years ago and Eva Moskowitz had bussed in people wearing orange t-shirts from all over the city to support the wonders of charter schools (most were not from Brooklyn despite the local nature of the protest). So why not “IN THE AGE OF FAKE BEING REAL” send in letters “supporting vouchers” on a mass scale. So what if there has been no awareness or actual participation by those who supposedly had “sent letters”. Perhaps those in charge of this LIE will claim that the “Sue Dixons” who have been teaching or doing whatever … for all those years are not the REAL Sue Dixon’s… just like there are still idiots who persist in claiming that Obama is not an American citizen. Fake is the new real right??? 😦

Both a class action lawsuit AND an FBI investigation are in order. Thank goodness for Rep. Springer in Texas who took note of this & then took action.
Showing not ALL Republicans are fanatic voucher-charter-school-question-not proponents.
