The Washington Post reports that high-level officials in the Trump administration tried to enlist intelligence agencies and Republican leaders in Congress to dispute the stories that there had been communication between the Trump campaign and Russian officials during the election campaign.
This story underlines the importance of an investigation by an independent bipartisan commission and/or a special prosecutor who is impartial. Keeping this matter under the wing of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was active in the Trump campaign, would constitute a cover-up.
The American people deserve to know whether a foreign power intervened in our election to choose our president and, if so, whether there was a quid pro quo.
At some point, the Republican party will have to stop making excuses for Trump and do their duty as Americans.
The Trump administration has enlisted senior members of the intelligence community and Congress in efforts to counter news stories about Trump associates’ ties to Russia, a politically charged issue that has been under investigation by the FBI as well as lawmakers now defending the White House.
Acting at the behest of the White House, the officials made calls to news organizations last week in attempts to challenge stories about alleged contacts between members of President Trump’s campaign team and Russian intelligence operatives, U.S. officials said.
The calls were orchestrated by the White House after unsuccessful attempts by the administration to get senior FBI officials to speak with news organizations and dispute the accuracy of stories on the alleged contacts with Russia.
The White House on Friday acknowledged those interactions with the FBI but did not disclose that it then turned to other officials who agreed to do what the FBI would not — participate in White House-arranged calls with news organizations, including The Washington Post.
Two of those officials spoke on the condition of anonymity — a practice President Trump has condemned…
The decision to involve those officials could be perceived as threatening the independence of U.S. spy agencies that are supposed to remain insulated from partisan issues, as well as undercutting the credibility of ongoing congressional probes. Those officials saw their involvement as an attempt to correct coverage they believed to be erroneous.
The effort also involved senior lawmakers with access to classified intelligence about Russia, including Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), the chairmen of the Senate and House intelligence committees. A spokesman for Nunes said that he had already begun speaking to reporters to challenge the story and that, “at the request of a White House communications aide, Chairman Nunes then spoke to an additional reporter and delivered the same message.”
Unlike the others, Nunes spoke on the record and was subsequently quoted in the Wall Street Journal.
In an interview, Burr acknowledged that he “had conversations about” Russia-related news reports with the White House and engaged with news organizations to dispute articles by the New York Times and CNN that alleged “repeated” or “constant” contact between Trump campaign members and Russian intelligence operatives.

It is imperative for us all to contact our legislators and also write and call the media to DEMAND an independent bipartisan commission on all this right NOW.
If indeed this administration has been colluding with Putin and the Russians both short and long term, and/or are doing business with them, the public must have this information. Bannon and Trump used their usual sleight of hand technique to deflect our attention away from their shocking attempt to influence the INTEL collected already from being publicly put forth by our intelligence agencies which have collected so much info about the Trump-Russian connection.
Sessions, who is the Bannon/Trump puppet as AG, cannot and will not follow up on this potentially egregious and illegal activity.
We do know that Trump continues his overseas profiteering in many countries, and this new report, leaked only days ago, shows how far reaching his villainy could reach.
Is it treasonous? Does it fall under the 25th Amendment, or under the Logan Act?
Americans should all be shouting out for an impartial investigation of Trump and his Russian Connection.

I wish I could believe this will happen.
The apologists for Trump keep saying “we” just need to get used to his style.
I think Trump and his allies will obstruct and delay on this, hoping the matter will go away. Jeff Sessions will figure out how to protect his buddies.
The issue of election tamporing by Russia and threats to the Affordable Care Act seem to be the main concerns of citizens who are participating in the “town halls.”

Why We Must Oppose the Kremlin-Baiting Against Trump

I assume you support a full and independent investigation of the ties between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.
Without that investigation, we will never get to the bottom of this important matter.

Ed,
You can’t have a new McCarthyism without a McCarthy. Who is the McCarthy of today? McCarthy was able to hold Congressional investigations. The Republicans hold control of the White House and Congress. What Democratic senator or member of the House is the new McCarthy?
This makes no sense.
Is the new McCarthy in the CIA or the FBI? Is Comey the new McCarthy?

Do you trust the CIA and FBI, given their dismal, anti-democracy records since World War II? Have you forgotten Cointelpro and the FBI war on the Black Panthers? How the FBI worked with Obama and local police to crush the non-violent Occupy Movement in 2011? Do you trust the neocons who want NATO to keep expanding eastward until war with Russia is unavoidable? Trump is an ignorant creep, but the precedent of a ‘soft coup’ removal of a president sets up future such removals of presidents progressives may support. Trade and detente with Russia are what peace-loving people all over the world want to see, not continued, armed tension as NATO forces (mostly U.S.) build up on Russia’s western borders.

You might even get some sympathy from me when it comes to Cohen’s argument . Yes NATO expansion was foolish . However this goes far beyond a foreign policy issue .
If you think this ignoramus in the White House has a clue about the policy implications and that is the motivating factor in his behavior . You are seriously delusional or which one of the bridges across the East river can I sell you . There is a nice one that runs from Brooklyn to just outside City Hall Park .
Mike Lofgren lays out the Russian connection in a pretty convincing argument. Good enough for a conviction when you add the Public statements of Donald jr about Russian money and the Russian foreign ministers statement . The standard for a jury is beyond a reasonable doubt .

The reason for NATO expansion was that the former Soviet satellites pleaded to join NATO to protect them against a resurgent imperialist Russia.
NATO didn’t ask them to join. They asked to be let in.

Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic joined NATO in March of 99 while Yeltsin was still President and Russia was a basket case.
“The interview from which that sentence is taken makes clear that he had in mind, in fact, the years 1990-91, when German reunification was on the cards and a promise was given not to deploy Nato forces in the former East Germany (a promise which Gorbachev says has been kept to this day). He goes on to say that the question of expanding Nato further afield did not even arise at that time, because “not a single east European country suggested it, even after the demise of the Warsaw pact in 1991. Western leaders didn’t raise the issue either.”
But when the matter did arise, in 1993, Gorbachev says: “I from the very start called it a great mistake. It was certainly a violation of the spirit of those declarations and assurances that we were given in 1990.” He goes on to say: “We now have a crisis in European relations. One of its causes, though not the only one, is the unwillingness of our western partners to take account of Russia’s point of view, legitimate interests and security. Verbally, they applauded Russia, especially during the Yeltsin years, but in deeds they took no account of it. I am thinking mainly of Nato’s enlargement, the plans to deploy a missile shield, and the west’s actions in areas important to Russia (Yugoslavia, Iraq, Georgia, Ukraine). They literally told us: it’s not your business. As a result an abscess built up, and burst.”

So Diane the thing that disputes the argument you are making is chronology and the opinion of the man who brought down the Soviet Union, Gorbachev .
Also as Truman once said about Somoza But he is our SOB .
Here is a list of 7 fascist regimes, brutal dictatorships ,death squads and all that we have had no problem bringing to power and supporting . The list could easily be expanded .This is just a few in Latin America. I would dare to say that the people in these Nations would;
“plead to protect them against imperialistic US domination. ”

Not everything that Trump says is wrong . He is stealing the progressive argument from the Democrats in several areas from jobs and trade to foreign policy . That, that has been allowed to happen is
a travesty .
My fear is that he will work with Republicans to apply Keynesian stimulus, that was denied to Obama, to supper charge growth. Putting the Nation on a sugar high comparable to the two previous bubbles.
Attached to that stimulus will be poison pills that will turn the Nation back a century.
But when looking to access blame for the rise of Trump . It falls squarely on the Neo (not) Liberal Democrats. Who as of yesterdays DNC election have not learned a thing. You can’t tell me your the party of the people when 12 or 13 Democratic Senators vote to keep
Americans from importing cheaper Drugs from Canada . You better know if they needed 15 or 20 , it would have been there.

Joel,
I was deeply aware of what was happening in the early 1990s. I made trips to Hungary, Poland, Romania, and what was then Czechoslovakia at the time.
The democratic activists were desperate to join NATO for protection against the Soviets. NATO didn’t ask them to join. They wanted to join.
Same with Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. They are tiny nations that had been under the Soviet boot since WW2. The Soviets had resettled many Russians there and imposed Russian language instruction in the hope that they could fully control the Baltic nations. But the anti-Soviet feeling remained intense and they too pleaded to join NATO.
Should NATO have kept them out?
Putin has troops on their borders even now, waiting for the chance to retake them. He described the breakup of the Soviet regime as the greatest disaster of the 20th century. The USSR was a dictatorship of the worst kind. Millions were killed, sent to Siberia, unjustly jailed. Dissent was ruthlessly squashed.

We will never agree on this . Of course having endured Soviet domination these nations sought out protection. Just as having endured the devastation of WW2 , Russians never wanted to be placed in a position of having a hostile force on their border. In the early 90s (93) when the expansion was first proposed Putin was a bit player .
It is not just Cohen but Kissinger who calls for a more rational approach . Long before before this ass entered the White House.. Putin is an autocratic tyrant who uses expansionist foreign policy just like Trumps calls to “Make America Great Again”, to shore up his base and take heat off of domestic failure. .
But our policy has given him the weapon . Just as surely as Democratic failures to support working class Americans from educators to factory workers, from mortgage holders to the residents of Flint … … , empowered Trump . If not directly ,indirectly by leaving the base home on election day.

Cohen’s piece is full of inaccuracies and is also way outdated. The new leaks this week from Intelligence agencies who have the most recent in depth INTEL on the Trump/Putin connection, and the hysterical response by Bannon/Trump trying to do a cover up, just proves the need for a complete independent investigation by a neutral bipartisan committee. It there is enough to this, then it is clear that Trump has committed sedition and treason in addition to profiteering illegally…all fall under the various laws to remove him as President of the US.

How ‘New Cold Warriors’ Cornered Trump – Consortiumnews
https://consortiumnews.com/2017/02/25/how-new-cold-warriors-cornered-trump/
The last 4 paragraphs of this article should be read by every American who cares about the future:
“Former CIA Director Brennan and other former Obama administration intelligence officials have used their power to lead a large part of the public to believe that Trump had conducted suspicious contacts with Russian officials without having the slightest evidence to support the contention that such contacts represent a serious threat to the integrity of the U.S. political process.
“Many people who oppose Trump for other valid reasons have seized on the shaky Russian accusations because they represent the best possibility for ousting Trump from power. But ignoring the motives and the dishonesty behind the campaign of leaks has far-reaching political implications. Not only does it help to establish a precedent for U.S. intelligence agencies to intervene in domestic politics, as happens in authoritarian regimes all over the world, it also strengthens the hand of the military and intelligence bureaucracies who are determined to maintain the New Cold War with Russia.
“Those war bureaucracies view the conflict with Russia as key to the continuation of higher levels of military spending and the more aggressive NATO policy in Europe that has already generated a gusher of arms sales that benefits the Pentagon and its self-dealing officials.
“Progressives in the anti-Trump movement are in danger of becoming an unwitting ally of those military and intelligence bureaucracies despite the fundamental conflict between their economic and political interests and the desires of people who care about peace, social justice and the environment.”

Ed…although we both read the same articles, and although I tend to agree with some of what you present, the crux is that if this sometimes duplicitous FBI and CIA now shows us info and data representing long and short time connections between the Trump organization and the Russian oligarchs with Putin in the lead, then it is to be taken seriously.
Comey was willing to influence the election with his phone threat directed at Hillary re Weiner’s emails…from which he backed down…so we know where his heart and mind are. But as leader of the agency, if he shows us the facts they gathered, my sense is to believe him. Brennan falls into this same category.
I certainly am far more doubting of the Bannon/Trump alternative facts position. Many trolls from both Right and Left are jumping into this new fray for various of their own reasons…so it behooves us to question all info until we have proof…but we as a nation, must demand proof of any and all allegations from both sides. Certainly the Repubs and most Dems are being way to quiet in demanding facts.

Absolutely agreed. But the key word is “if”. It hasn’t happened yet. And until it does, we cannot assume guilty until proven innocent. That’s not the America I was raised to believe in, even if we’re talking about someone as odious as Trump. Again, John Wayne Gacy was discovered to have the bodies of 33 young boys buried on his property. Even he was considered innocent until a court found him guilty. Trump deserves the same.

Diane, there is NO DOUBT that Russia interfered in our November 2016 General Election, and did so with the express intent of electing Donald Trump.
The FBI, CIA, NSA, Department of Homeland Security, and 17 other U.S. Intelligence/Security Agencies have all agreed in their investigation, the public report of which is entitled “Assessing Russian Activities and Intentions in Recent US Elections,” dated 06January2017, was issued by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which “is a declassified version of a highly classified assessment; its conclusions are identical to those in the highly classified assessment but this version does not include the full supporting information on key elements of the influence campaign” and may be found here:
https://www.dni.gov/files/documents/ICA_2017_01.pdf –
and here:
https://www.intelligence.senate.gov/sites/default/files/documents/ICA_2017_01.pdf –
The report states in part, that:
“Russian efforts to influence the 2016 US presidential election represent the most recent expression of Moscow’s longstanding desire to undermine the US led liberal democratic order, but these activities demonstrated a significant escalation in directness, level of activity, and scope of effort compared to previous operations.
“We assess Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the US presidential election. Russia’s goals were to undermine public faith in the US democratic process, denigrate Secretary Clinton, and harm her electability and potential presidency.
“We further assess Putin and the Russian Government developed a clear preference for President-elect Trump.
“We have high confidence in these judgments.
“We also assess Putin and the Russian Government aspired to help President-elect Trump’s election chances when possible by discrediting Secretary Clinton and publicly contrasting her unfavorably to him.
“All three agencies agree with this judgment.”
The question is:
WHAT WILL WE DO ABOUT IT?

Perhaps Trump is using a 2 pronged strategy in anticipation of harmful information coming out concerning his relationship with Russian officials before the election. First, suggesting that the media is giving “fake news.” That way, when information does come out, people will be less likely to believe it because they have heard a million times that the media is not trustworthy and is their enemy. Second, getting staff to counter stories about his ties to Russia. Not only that, he is also stating that his own government agencies (FBI) are not to be trusted. This is the same guy that invited the Russians to find Clinton’s missing emails. WHY? Why would a US president PUBLICLY undermine his OWN GOVERNMENT agencies (and the press) and the judicial branch? WHY?
