Trump has selected Scott Pruitt, attorney general of Oklahoma and a close ally of the fossil fuel industry, to lead the EPA.
This signals an end to efforts to protect the environment.
The New York Times writes:
“Mr. Pruitt, a Republican, has been a key architect of the legal battle against Mr. Obama’s climate change policies, actions that fit with the president-elect’s comments during the campaign. Mr. Trump has criticized the established science of human-caused global warming as a hoax, vowed to “cancel” the Paris accord committing nearly every nation to taking action to fight climate change, and attacked Mr. Obama’s signature global warming policy, the Clean Power Plan, as a “war on coal.”
“Mr. Pruitt, 48, who has emerged as a hero to conservative activists, is also one of a number of Republican attorneys general who have formed an alliance with some of the nation’s top energy producers to push back against the Obama regulatory agenda, a 2014 investigation by The New York Times revealed.
“At the heart of Mr. Obama’s efforts to tackle climate change are a collection of E.P.A. regulations aimed at forcing power plants to significantly reduce their emissions of planet-warming carbon dioxide pollution. It will not be possible for Mr. Trump to unilaterally cancel the rules, which were released under the 1970 Clean Air Act. But it would be possible for a legally experienced E.P.A. chief to substantially weaken, delay or slowly dismantle them.
“As Oklahoma’s top law enforcement official, Mr. Pruitt has fought environmental regulations — particularly the climate change rules. Although Mr. Obama’s rules were not completed until 2015, Mr. Pruitt was one of a handful of attorneys general, along with Greg Abbott of Texas, who began planning as early as 2014 for a coordinated legal effort to fight them. That resulted in a 28-state lawsuit against the administration’s rules. A decision on the case is pending in a federal court, but it is widely expected to advance to the Supreme Court.”

He wanted BP’s top PR person, but Snydely already hired her for his DEQ. Birds of a feather soak up oil together …

Why did Ivana Trump invite Al Gore to talk with Donald Trump? Why did Al Gore accept? What did they talk about? Why won’t Al Gore say what they talked about? Was there a confidentiality agreement attached to the conversation? More questions than answers. Al Gore made himself look like a “you’re fired” participant in Trump’s on-going circus.

We will have to wait and see. I for one trust Al Gore and at this point it is difficult, no impossible, to believe that even Trump must recognize thatt climate change is real and man made. If Gore cannot move him God help us, it is all over.
It is of course FAR from reassuring when Trump appoints people like he is doing but somehow he won the electoral college votes. Most of us are holding our breath as is the rest of the world.
My concern is not just Trump but’
That so many citizens, I will not say Americans, voted for him
and
that “truth” is no longer relevant. So many people are being led down the garden path and “a nation divided cannot stand”
and
we are a VERY divided nation.
It is and will be difficult to ascertain what is true when “truth” is no longer relevant and a foregin nation will not have to bomb us or wage any other kind of war when they can divide and conquer this way.
We will destroy ourselves and any semblance of Democracy which may be left over
Of course, if the planet is untenable except for cockroaches what difference will it make anyway.
The Chinese curse “May you live in interesting times’ certainly fits the bill here.

I speculate that Ivanka Trump thought that a meeting with Al Gore would be a good PR move for her and her father. Meeting with Gore might give their followers the impression that ‘see, he really is open to different points of view, blahblahblah’. The important thing remains who Trump nominates for his cabinet and other positions.
I would hope that Gore is not so desperate or delusional that he doesn’t recognize that he might have been played.

Global warming, or climate change is a daily happening. There isn’t any data to support the issue that it is caused by man. The forecasts are always 4- or 50 years out when moist of us will not be around. It is weather forecasting by computer projections – not real scientific basis. I still haven’t seen an answer to the question of the last receding ice event on the globe when man wasn’t around – was it from dinosaur flatulence? Could these “events” be natural cycles. Our children were told the nice polar bears were dying out, yet factually they were increasing and the ice caps were thickening. Fear – you better send Gore and the UN your money to protect you! Below is a cross-post of a COMMENT/response to an article in Inside Higher Ed (also copied below). I wonder what will happen to the committed staff members in the DOE who root out corruption in some of these privately owned colleges when DeVos takes over? According to another comment, the colleges that were caught in their corruption are “run by the same family.” (I have not verified that comment.) First the comment, then the article:
Comment by Sam Osborne:
“The conservative right in service to and in the hands of the hoarders of the nation’s wealth via propaganda and political control have for the past 35 year been bent on destroying public education and a means of our culture fostering an enlightened public that via the test of reason and healthy skepticism moved our nation ever forward in benefit the founding purpose of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all. Public high school have been under attack in favor of charter schools and vouchers, and institutions of higher education have in large part been turned into machine shops to mill students into standardized parts to fit into the profiteering motives of business and industry until they as workers are pink-slipped out into the boot hill of obsolescence. Disappearing is education as a gift to enrich the lives and wonder of the emerging generations who in their own time would prove themselves to be another Greatest Generation that moves the quality of life and standard of living in advance of what had seemed just good enough.”

Education Department Blocks Aid for 2 For-Profits
“The U.S. Department of Education said Tuesday it would block for-profit colleges Globe University and the Minnesota School of Business from receiving additional federal student aid.
“As of Dec. 31, students will no longer be able to use funds from Pell Grants or federal direct loans at those institutions, which are jointly owned. The Federal Student Aid Enforcement Unit found that the programs committed fraud involving Title IV funds and misrepresented their criminal justice programs as well as the ability to transfer their credits to other colleges.
“Globe enrolls about 1,000 students at 10 locations across the Midwest, and Minnesota School of Business enrolls about 700 students in Minnesota.
“’Globe and MSB preyed upon potential public servants — targeting those with a sincere desire to help their communities,’ Under Secretary of Education Ted Mitchell said in a written statement. ‘These institutions misrepresented their programs, potentially misleading students, and abused taxpayer funds, and so violated federal law, which is why we removed them from the federal student aid program. This is a sober reminder that not all institutions deliver on their advertised promises.’
“The department blocked access to Title IV aid for new students enrolling at ITT Technical Institutes in August — a serious blow that was followed the next month by an announcement that the for-profit would close its doors at campuses across the country.”

It would be funny if it wasnt so sad. The man who wants to get rid of the EPA, who has taken the Obama administration to court over to me, what is not nearly enough regulation, will be in charge of – to put it bluntly- being a chaperone to the further rape of the earth, including the devestation of the very air and water needed to sustain life on earth. I have decided if there is one thing in the world that we all have in common, its that we all live on the planet and need clean, sustainable sources for our life essentials AND creature comforts. We can all individually do our parts, as much as we can- I have busted my butt to walk the walk as best I can with the husband I have ( he is slower to adopt my lifestyle changes), and raising kids- but I am a work in progress like anyone. If I need to put my body on the frontlines I will do so peacefully for now, and I will be the squeakiest wheels to my legistlators, educate and motivate anyway I can- Sadly I do not have so mant allies in the region I live in-and there is so much work to be done! I have been fighting to get the farmer behind my house to release the ingredients of the pesticides he sprays on his feed corn and soy, and not one person is on my side in my quest for this info. I have suffered neurologically, my son who was in utero in my current home is autistic, we all have asthma- and we eat clean organic foods and a predominantly plant based diet- no substance abuse, job hazards, and filtered water-
With things this bad now-how much worse will it get for us as individuals let alone the planet which is already about to create millions of climate refugees all over the world ( in addition to what the wars have )- its an economic issue, a health issue, food security issues, national security issue, and a moral
issue. As a lapsed Catholic I reject the idea that this life is meaningless in comparison to an afterlife because if we were to be judged, I cannot imagine God would feel favorably for willingly allowing creation lay waste foe greed and convenience. When I hear Pope Francis talk about the environment however, it clicks- because half the reason I left faith was indifference to these poverty and other social issues. We need to say NO or we are complicit.

I heard a piece on NPR where some some expert was asked if it’s really possible for Trump to get rid off the EPA and DOE as he promised during his campaign. The expert said that actually it’s much simpler than one would assume. He then said something to the extent of “You just have to pick the appropriate secretaries who would run these agencies to the ground”.

Trump’s agency picks are one thing; but what also bothers me is the precedent that’s being set about chipping away at the Constitution and the protocols surrounding the presidency. The tax returns, the shortening of the time for a military pick to be retired before entering public service; Trump’s continuing his business practices regardless of Constitution prohibitions–does anyone really think pay-for-play is not already going on? It seems Republicans in Congress have drunk the poison and want to do nothing but kiss his ring and give him whatever he wants (we’ll see on that one, I guess). But if he can break this rule, then that rule, what’s next? With the precedent in place, Trump seems to be all-too-easily setting the stage to dismantle and destroy not only agencies, but our Constitution.
It’s the biggest con going: he goes on this “thank you” tour, praising the flag and the military to orgiastic crowds when military history is riddled with people dying for democratic values and a way of life, and against fascism–the same fascist elements that are growing exponentially and marching through Washington as we speak. Too, too many historical similarities.

PARTIAL QUOTE from article:
This is what happens when Donald Trump attacks a private citizen on Twitter At a bipartisan convention on Oct. 12, 2015, Donald Trump fielded a question from impassioned college student Lauren Batchelder about women’s rights and equal pay. (No Labels Problem Solver Convention)
By Jenna Johnson December 8 at 8:21 PM
About a year ago, 18-year-old college student Lauren Batchelder stood up at a political forum in New Hampshire and told Donald Trump that she didn’t think he was “a friend to women.”
The next morning, Trump fired back on Twitter — calling Batchelder an “arrogant young woman” and accusing her of being a “plant” from a rival campaign. Her phone began ringing with callers leaving threatening messages that were often sexual in nature. Her Facebook and email inboxes filled with similar messages. As her addresses circulated on social media and her photo flashed on the news, she fled home to hide.
“I didn’t really know what anyone was going to do,” said Batchelder, now 19, who has never discussed her experience with a reporter until now. “He was only going to tweet about it and that was it, but I didn’t really know what his supporters were going to do, and that to me was the scariest part.”
This is what happens when Trump targets a private citizen who publicly challenges him.
When Trump tweeted about Batchelder in October 2015, he had fewer than 5 million followers; he now has more than 17 million and has bragged that having a Twitter account is “like owning the New York Times without the losses.” Twitter has become Trump’s cyber-magic wand, allowing him to quickly act on a fleeting idea, a fit of anger or something he sees on television. Now that he is the president-elect, the power of Trump’s tweets has only increased.
Left, Donald Trump addresses the No Labels Problem Solver Convention in Manchester, N.H., in 2015. Right, Lauren Batchelder listens as Trump answers her question. (Reuters, AP/Reuters, AP)
With one tweet, Trump can change headlines on cable news, move financial markets or cause world leaders to worry. With one tweet last week, Trump inflamed a conflict with China. With another tweet on Tuesday, Trump caused Boeing stock to plummet. With a third on Wednesday night, Trump prompted a series of threatening calls to the home of a union leader who had called him a liar.
[I’m the union leader Donald Trump attacked. I’m tired of being to lied to about our jobs.]
Although Trump said months ago that he was likely to give up Twitter if elected, he has shown little sign of doing so. He will soon inherit the @POTUS account, which has 12.5 million followers.
“I think I am very restrained, and I talk about important things,” Trump said during an interview with the “Today” show this week. “Frankly, it’s a modern-day form of communication. . . . I get it out much faster than a press release. I get it out much more honestly than dealing with . . . dishonest reporters. So many reporters are dishonest.” . . .
**. . . Logic doesn’t matter to online trolls,** who rated Batchelder’s physical appearance, threatened to rape or otherwise hurt her and called her vulgar names. A photoshopped picture popped up online depicting her face covered in semen. . . . ” END QUOTE

New York City underwater? Gas over $9 a gallon? A carton of milk costs almost $13? Welcome to June 12, 2015. Or at least that was the wildly-inaccurate version of 2015 predicted by ABC News exactly seven years ago. Appearing on Good Morning America in 2008, Bob Woodruff hyped Earth 2100, a special that pushed apocalyptic predictions of the then-futuristic 2015.
The segment included supposedly prophetic videos, such as a teenager declaring, “It’s June 8th, 2015. One carton of milk is $12.99.” (On the actual June 8, 2015, a gallon of milk cost, on average, $3.39.) Another clip featured this prediction for the current year: “Gas reached over $9 a gallon.” (In reality, gas costs an average of $2.75.)
On June 12, 2008, correspondent Bob Woodruff revealed that the program “puts participants in the future and asks them to report back about what it is like to live in this future world. The first stop is the year 2015.”
As one expert warns that in 2015 the sea level will rise quickly, a visual shows New York City being engulfed by water. The video montage includes another unidentified person predicting that “flames cover hundreds of miles.”
Then-GMA co-anchor Chris Cuomo appeared frightened by this future world. He wondered, “I think we’re familiar with some of these issues, but, boy, 2015? That’s seven years from now. Could it really be that bad?”
Ultimately, ABC delayed the air-date for Earth 2100 and the one-hour show didn’t debut until June 2, 2009. The program showcased the terrible impact of global warming from 2015 through 2100. In the special, a “storm of the century” wiped out Miami. Other highlights included a destroyed New York City and an abandoned Las Vegas. By 2084, Earth’s population will apparently be just 2.7 billion.
On June 13, 2008, ABCNews.com promoted the special by hyperventilating, “Are we living in the last century of our civilization?” Unlike the 2015 predictions, that suggestion hasn’t (yet) been proven wrong.
Seven years later, the network has quietly ignored its horribly inaccurate predictions about 2015. When it comes to global warming claims, apparently results don’t matter for ABC.
A partial transcript of the June 12, 2008 GMA segment is below:

CHRIS CUOMO: Now, we will have a dramatic preview for you of an unprecedented ABC News event called “Earth 2100.” We’re asking you to help create a story that is yet to unfold: What our world will look like in 100 years if we don’t save our troubled planet. Your reports will actually help form the backbone of a two-hour special airing this fall. ABC’s Bob Woodruff will be the host. He joins us now. Pleasure, Bob.
BOB WOODRUFF: You too, Chris. You know, this show is a countdown through the next century and shows what scientists say might very well happen if we do not change our current path. As part of the show, today, we are launching an interactive web game which puts participants in the future and asks them to report back about what it is like to live in this future world. The first stop is the year 2015.
[NOTE: ABC provides no graphics or identification for any of the following individuals/activists featured. Identifications taken discerned from web article.]
UNIDENTIFIED MALE #1: The public is sleepwalking into the future. You know, sort of going through the motions of daily life and really not paying attention.
JAMES HANSEN (NASA/AL GORE SCIENCE ADVISOR): We can see what the prospects are and we can see that we could solve the problem but we’re not doing it.
[Graphic: Welcome to 2015]
PETER GLEICK (SCIENTIST/PACIFIC INSTITUTE): In 2015, we’ve still failed to address the climate problem.
JOHN HOLDREN (PROFESSOR/HARVARD UNIVERSITY): We’re going to see more floods, more droughts, more wildfires.
UNIDENTIFIED “REPORTER:” Flames cover hundreds of square miles.
UNIDENTIFIED VOICE: We expect more intense hurricanes.
UNIDENTIFIED MALE #5: Well, how warm is it going to get? How much will sea level rise? We don’t know really know where the end is.
UNIDENTIFIED VOICE #2: Temperatures have hit dangerous levels.
UNIDENTIFIED VOICE #3: Agriculture production is dropping because temperatures are
rising.
HEIDI CULLEN (WEATHER CHANNEL/CLIMATE CHANGE EXPERT): There’s about one billion people who are malnourished. That number just continually grows.
…
CUOMO: I think we’re familiar with some of these issues, but, boy, 2015? That’s seven years from now. Could it really be that bad?
WOODRUFF: It’s very soon, you know. But all you have to do is look at the world today right today. You know, you’ve got gas prices going up. You got food prices going up. You’ve got extreme weather. The scientists have studied this for decades. They say if you connect the dots, you can actually see that we’re approaching maybe even a perfect storm. Or you have got shrinking resources, population growth. Climate change. So, the idea now is to look at it, wake up about it and then try to do something to fix it.
…
WOODRUFF: But the best of these regular reports that come from people that are watching, we’re going to put those on, all of this on our two-hour production that’s going to happen in the fall. And we just want more of these people to watch. And we’ve gotten already some remarkable interviews from these people. And just take a quick look.
UNIDENTIFIED TEENAGER: It’s June 8th, 2015. One carton of milk is $12.99.
SECOND UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Gas reached over $9 a gallon.
THIRD UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I’m scared [bleeped] right now, but I have to get this out.
WOODRUFF: So the producers actually work with those people that send in their ideas into the website. And then we’re just hoping that the goal is ultimately get these ideas very soon.
CUOMO: Lovely. Bob Woodruff. Thank you very much. You can find out much more about how you can be part of this exciting and important show. You can go to Earth2100.tv. Earth2100.tv or you can go to ABCNews.com.

No – it doesn’t prove that, what it does show is the fact that they are predictions. It also shows your misinterpretation 0f the clip – it was for humor – but also demonstrate a possible reason why 5-10% of us disagree with meteorologists predictions 50 years out….This space ship you ride on is constantly going through cycles of conditions that have real scientific examples in environmental history. Are the seas going to rise and fall, yes – as the seas warm they rise – will the ice thickness change – yes, as for example, the earth tilts, the sun spot activity.
I hope Zorba invested in solar panels for his abode, got an electric car, bought a bike to get to work, and has planted trees to help regulate the CO2. How about a windmill in the backyard? LOL

Behind those predictions there are hard facts provided by scientists. Then some non-scientists, like yourself, simply react with “LOL”.
All the “arguments” of the deniers are like that: no facts. Science and its results are unlike a religion: you don’t have a choice of believing or not believing scientific results. However frustrating it may be, only scientists are qualified to evaluate and argue over science. This shouldn’t be a surprise: in most jobs, outsiders are unqualified to do them. That politicians and talk show hosts think they are qualified to voice an opinion on most jobs speaks for itself.
