I am a patriot. I love America. I believe in its promise, its hopefulness, its welcome to those seeking refuge. For me, it has always been the land of opportunity, the country where dreams may come true. My mother was an immigrant from Bessarabia. My father’S parents immigrated from Poland.
Thus, I get upset when people ridicule or humiliate those who are weaker, people who are peaceably going about their life and trying to become Americans.
This story was very upsetting because I could identify with the children and their families.

I see that “Liberty Mutual” commercial (over and over again) with the Statue of Liberty in the background. I guess that’s all it’s good for any more: advertising. “Bring me your poor, . . . ” how does it go?
The contrast between that Statue, and what it has meant to our Country for a very long time, and the reality that is coming to pass as we speak, is becoming so stark as to make the Statue into a parody.

I can tell you from personal experience, Latinos are worried and frightened. Spanish radio is full of advice urging those that have given personal information to the government should move. I have a close personal relative that is undocumented. He is wonderful father and husband. He works hard, pays his bills and taxes and has never been in trouble with the law. His business creates jobs for others. It would be tragic for his family if he were to be deported. His family most likely would become an economic burden as they would be eligible for food stamps and other benefits as American citizens, if he were forced to leave. It makes no sense for the government to deport someone like this man who had been here for seventeen years, but who ever accused Trump of having sense?

To retired teacher who writes: “. . .but who ever accused Trump of having sense?”
I have been wondering about the question: Why do so many Americans put up with Trump, especially in the light of our history of being so incisive about the morality of our leaders? I still don’t understand it. But one thing comes to mind: some have said that Trump is not an ideologue but rather speaks from his stream of consciousness (though he’s becoming more “canned” as the days go on). Further, such stream-of-consciousness-speaking can have the sound of authenticity, even if that stream is low-life filthy and devoid of anything honorable at all and, as you say, devoid of making any sense at all.
On the other hand, politicians who are careful about what they say to the public can be engaged in double-talk; OR they can be extremely thoughtful and, with edited material, only want to express what is best and what shows them as deserving of their high office, even if, in fact, they don’t reach that higher level at times. The later may sound “canned” or not, regardless of the intentions behind it.
In either case, we can say of Trump–from our already-shown experience of him–that there is such a thing as a low-life filthy politician who is devoid of anything honorable and, further, who is “authentically” so.

I think Trump is an authentic shark that has duped a large percentage of of the electorate into believing he “has their back.” We will find out the hard way that Trump looks out for Trump and his interests. He will make a mess and be unapologetic about it. He doesn’t seem to understand consequences.

To retired teachers: At least on MSNBC (don’t know about the others) they quoted DeVos, and commented on it, where she OPENLY says that she buys influence. I think many Republicans are hitting their heads of this one. Who thought they could come out of their dark anti-democratic closet of immorality and be so open about their intentions to the American people. “Holy day! We’ve been wasting our time lurking around in the dark!”
Remember that state legislator who, on-mike, was checking off the boxes of having suppressed the Black vote in his state? We thought that was bad. Now a good number of the American people have openly endorsed depravity. Holy cow. Anything really does go.

I’m just a teacher, but since the election I have actually been having Trump nightmares, keeping me from resting and scaring me. Now, with that non teacher billionaire Betsy DeVos being placed as Secretary of Education what are we to expect? She believes teachers get paid too much. I barely make ends meet. There has to be a solution.
