Nicholas Tampio, a professor of political science at Fordham University, says that it is time for a clean sweep of the rancorous education problems in New York state. The state has had a massive parent-student opt out of standardized testing based on the Common Core for two straight years; more than 200,000 (or about 20%) of the eligible students did not sit for the tests. There is near unanimity that the rollout of the Common Core under former Commissioner John King (now Secretary of Education) was badly botched. Governor Andrew Cuomo formed a commission that recommended a revision of the Common Core standards to respond to teacher and student complaints.
But as Tampio reports, the “revised” standards are almost identical to the original Common Core. The original errors of the standards for early childhood education remain age-inappropriate, continuing the expectation that kindergarten children will be able to read “emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding.”
Tampio says it is time for the New York Board of Regents to steer the ship of state. They are in charge. The new chancellor knows that the Common Core is riddled with problems, as are the tests. Tampio says it is time to get a new Commissioner of Education and to dump the Common Core.

Something I can second heartily. I imagine most readers here (though not all, I know), would agree as well.

All one has to do to explain Trumpism, is to look at the education wars. The dynamic is the same through out the economy . False narratives by the “ELITES’ repeated ad-nausea..
Followed by policy that is harmful to many individuals. While that policy benefits a small group of elites either financially or ideologically.
As the people rebel smoke and mirrors and lip service are applied to insure that nothing changes. The Oligarchy who funds our political class will be appeased, the people be damned. The masses are complaining . “so let them eat cake”
So in NY we have a similar narrative to the National scene, a Democratic Governor who works on many issues like education with the Republicans. Against the wishes of his base . When the stuff hits the fan, whose name sits on top of the legislation?.
There are two Facebook groups in the NY opt out movement. . LI opt out and Stop CC NY. .
LI opt out is a strong supporter of Public Schools., Stop CC has a pretty right wing tilt. Together they propelled the civil disobedience of 200,000 opt outs
How much longer do you think this charade can go on before the Republicans take over
the governorship and charters become the least of our concerns. Cuomo has already toyed with support for a disguised voucher program . One that has tremendous appeal to Catholics and Orthodox Jews.
Time to clean house.

The major financial backers and chief political cheerleaders for the Common Core standards all share a common opinion: Not for my kids!
The standards can be rendered moot by simply decoupling teacher evaluations from test scores. This one policy has done more damage than could ever have been imagined by Coleman, Gates, Duncan, Cuomo, and King. Teaching here in NY has regained a sense of normality now that the vast majority of teachers are being evaluated on shared Regents scores which, unlike their grade 3 to 8 counterparts, include very favorable cut scores for high school students. Why on God’s green Earth would Dr. Rosa and company want us to revisit the biggest hoax in NYS education history.

Everyone should reject Common Core as the attempt by the Nanny State to control all learning by all children. It does not take a village to raise our children if we as parents commit to the raising of them. It can take some creative juggling of work schedules and years of sacrifice which many younger parents are unwilling to make, but decent, law-abiding citizens who can think for themselves can be raised in this century. I have the proof here in my house with my own two daughters. All do not have to be self-absorbed and electronically addicted as are so many of the students today. Reason number 7 on my List of Reason to Retire Right Now as a teacher. Parents aren’t raising their children and then they are blaming the schools when their children are total jerks.
