Larry Miller is an editor at Rethinking Schools. He taught in the Milwaukee Public Schools for 17 years. He was elected to the Milwaukee school board in 2009.
Governor Scott Walker is doing his best to eliminate public education in Milwaukee by expanding vouchers and charters, even though the public schools are more successful than either of the privatized alternatives.
In this entertaining post, Miller cites some of Donald Trump’s most outrageous statements. He notes that Alberta Darling, who is Governor Walker’s ally in seeking to destroy public education, is support the “racist buffoon” candidate for the Presidency.

“A new division of the Pennsylvania Department of Education will provide financial oversight of charter schools, among other things, Gov. Tom Wolf announced Wednesday.
The PDE Division of Charter Schools will work directly with charter schools to improve student achievement and boost parental involvement. The division will monitor student growth and attendance, charter schools’ compliance with improvement plans and analyze data submitted annually to the Education Department.”

I don’t know why charter finances can’t be audited locally, like public schools. Why do they need their own division of state government? They’re supposedly local public schools. Is there something unique about charter financials that requires state specialists?

Pennsylvania has finally decided to start regulating charter schools:

It won’t work, though. Ohio has had a state office to regulate charter schools for 15 years. They’re never mentioned at all in any of the scandal stories. I was shocked to learn they have a director. I have literally never seen her name in a charter school story.
