The U.S. Department of Justice announced that it would end the use of privatized prisons, after receiving a report that documented that they are less safe and less able to provide effective services to inmates.

What happens when the private prison CEOs and their investors send an army of lobbyists armed with lots of cash to state capitals and DC to pass legislation that will strip the U.S. Department of Justice of any power they have to do this?
Because that’s what the corporate psychopath autocrats are going to do. The corporate education industry has already done this in California where corporate charters are often denied at the local level but approved at the state level where the locals are silenced and cut out of the decision making process. Eva did it in New York state.

Keep in mind this is an Obama administration proclamation which, as announced, will take at least a decade to be fully implemented. However, in roughly five months there will be a new administration in the White House which may or may not continue the plan. One candidate for said office is a certifiable lunatic and the other has ties to the private prison industry in her campaign. Who’s to say what the future holds?

While it’s certainly good news that the DOJ won’t be using private prisons anymore, they are still being used by DHS to house hapless migrant families. I discuss this at length in a recent *Jacobin* piece https://www.jacobinmag.com/2016/08/immigration-democrats-hillary-clinton-barack-obama/
Worrisome too are the huge campaign contributions private prison firms make to politicians. CCA and GEO have contributed over $130K to certain presidential hopefuls, making me doubt they would change policies.
