Bob Schaeffer of FairTest reports the latest testing news from across the nation:
Two big stories as testing season gets underway in many states — the surging opt-out movement and the collapse of many states’ computerized exam delivery systems — both demonstrating the ongoing failure of politically driven test-and-punish policies.

OMG, how dumb do the publishers have to be to include a word scramble like that? I can’t imagine this girl was the only one to give that answer.

Is there mention in any of these articles of the page omission in the New York State ELA tests on Days 2 and 3? The page that was omitted was the planning page for the essay. While some may say this is minor, what’s the big deal, for students who actually take the time to plan what they write, the lack of a planning page could have impacted the clarity of their writing. The validity of the test scores is certainly something to wonder about. The State’s response is very lack luster: just give the kids scrap paper.
That was fine if you knew the planning page was missing on Day 2, but if no one said anything, and teachers aren’t supposed to read the tests (really? really) then how would a teacher know to give kids the scrap paper?
This situation begs so many questions…
Time for some public outrage.
The State wants us to trust them. They say things are changing. But if the new testing company, Questar, omitted an entire page of a test, then what other smaller, less noticeable things are they omitting?
New York parents and teachers: Has anyone else out there been wondering what, if anything, will come of this?

NYSED sent a belated memo on day 2. By the time proctors got it, most of the students were done writing. The moratorium makes testing moot anyway.
