A statement by the North Carolina NAACP:
The North Carolina NAACP Stands Against the Hypocrisy and Immorality of the NC General Assembly Made Clear By the Passage of HB2
The constitutional rights of North Carolinians to equal protection under the law in the state and federal constitutions are under attack.
An estimated 7 people die preventable deaths daily in North Carolina, including veterans, healthcare workers and other working poor people, because the NC General Assembly did not pass Medicaid Expansion under the Affordable Care Act.
Tens of thousands of voters have been disenfranchised or burdened by voter suppression laws and the inconsistent implementation of them across the state.
Hundreds of thousands of working poor North Carolinians are locked into poverty by a minimum wage that doesn’t allow them to feed their families and care for their loved ones.
Despite our cries for justice and mercy, the NC General Assembly has never called a Special Session to accept Medicaid Expansion. They have never called a Special Session to undue the voter suppression laws. They have never called a Special Session to pass a minimum wage increase and restore the Earned Income Tax Credit.
North Carolinians face real threats to our constitutional rights and lives. Instead of addressing these real needs, the NC General Assembly, under the extreme leadership of Speaker Tim Moore and Senate Leader Phil Berger, called a Special Session to overturn non-discrimination protections across the state in House Bill 2. Now the Governor had signed the worst anti gay bill in the country.
House Bill 2 passed and signed prevents local governments from passing ANY nondiscrimination policy that provides protections for lesbian, gay, and transgender people. HB 2 also gives Raleigh lawmakers unprecedented control over local governments by pre-empting local employment ordinances governing wages, benefits, employee protections and leave policies.
The North Carolina NAACP and the Forward Together Moral Movement demand equal protection under the law for all. Any bill that undermines the constitutional right of one group hurts us all. HB 2 is extreme and immoral.

The fear of encountering a transgendered person in the restroom is probably the weirdest paranoia I’ve ever heard of.

attorneys I’ve talked to said the points were more about gender flip-flopping in relation to young folks and the use of public restrooms, dressing rooms and showers—such as in schools (one year Sophie identifies as a girl, the next a boy, and back again).

We must have legislation that addresses our national crisis of young folks changing their gender willy-nilly.

IM: NO KID that I know would “switch genders back and forth.” The horrible bullying transgendered kids face is no small thing, let alone of the kids were switching genders over and over. This sounds like a red herring to me.
And FLERP: I agree. I’ve never understood this uproar over restrooms, either.

A prefect example of how the same general crowd that address rheeal needs when it comes to public education won’t address real needs of the general public.
And instead goes right to the sneer, jeer and smear. Contempt culture is all they know.

It is certainly more complex than presented through the outrage.
I think this post is a list of frustrating factors, that may or may not be related at the end of the day.
I also wonder if it were not an election year, and if the legislation were not part of a list, would it get this kind of attention?
I don’t know. I imagine the mindset of conservative leadership in this instance is to keep things at the most basic understanding of interpretation (relying on biology at birth, in this case) so that working time and productivity is not eclipsed by these other issues.

I guess they didn’t get the memo from the federal government about equality. I suppose this will end up in the courts. We have seen this type of behavior before from red states that try to curtail Roe v. Wade.

Franklin Academy, a no homework charter school, has sex segregated core classes. ACLU says it is based on junk science.
I was wondering would they put a transgender boy in the boy’s or girl’s class.

Substitute Teacher: most likely a charter school would fall back on their sugary version of that classic restaurant business placard—
“We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.”
Their version: “I don’t think your child would be a good fit here so go to a neighborhood public school. They accept everybody.”

The North Carolina Republicans in power continue to drag us down in so many areas. It is difficult to watch what was a fairly progressive southern state lose stature on the national level. I do not like to cast aspersions but when McCrory was elected and the Republicans became the majority in the legislature things began to go south(!)
Democrats got up and left the room when the vote was taken, perhaps to go to the restroom.

Civil disobedience should be organized. Thousands of Americans should cross dress and enter the state in order to use their public facilities. We should force their law enforcement personnel to spend countless hours arresting these thousands. Let us see how long this immoral law stays on the books.
