Dr. Betty Rosa was elected to lead the New York Board of Regents!
Rosa was the parents’ choice. She was endorsed by NYSAPE, the leaders of the opt out movement. She is a professional educator. She has experience in bilingual education and special education. She has been critical of high-stakes testing. She listens.
This is a huge setback for corporate reform in New York.
A great victory for NY’s students!!

YEA!

It amazes me to read in such rags as the NY Post that there are those who believe that Betty Rosa does not believe in high standards and rigor. This woman was an English language learner when she first moved from Puerto Rico to the Bronx at the age of 9 and now has five college degrees with her third masters and a doctorate from Harvard University!
I suppose the NY Post has their own agenda that seems to be lacking one essential element…………the truth!

Congratulations Betty Rosa!
Let us take a moment to be happy, grateful, and hopeful in NY State!
It seems to happen so rarely these days that there’s anything to celebrate in the public education policy arena.
I’ve met Ms. Rosa several times at forums where she is happy to speak in support of teachers, parents, and students, but also happy to just to listen. She is a tremendous supporter of real teaching, real learning, and understands what our true challenges are.
Surely, the tides can start to turn now…
Let’s do what we can to help and support Ms. Rosa in her new position.
Maybe New York can help lead other states in a new direction.
– Ever hopeful me…

Where does she stand on VAM?
All that matters. All this chat about opt out and testing is great but the VAM piece is where the rubber meets the road.
I will abstain from hope until I hear a robust, clause-free, no-wiggle-room answer to where she stands on VAM.

I emailed her today about teacher evaluations being tied to test scores. I strongly encouraged her to eliminate this most harmful component of the APPR. I’ll let you know.
