At least two lawsuits have been filed to stop Nevada’s sweeping “education savings account” legislation, which would allow parents to use public funds to enroll their children in private or religious schools or for home schooling. Today, District Judge James E. Wilson, Jr., ruled in one of those cases. He issued a preliminary injunction against the law, in that it does irreparable harm to the parents who sued by diverting public funds from public schools.
I will post more tomorrow on this decision.
This is just one of a number of legal efforts by pro-student people to block corporate right-wing “reformers.” I think we need to use legal opportunities more. The Right understands clearly–as today’s public union case before the Supremes illustrates–the usefulness of the courts.
I would not argue for a legal approach to preempt more direct actions, like those in Detroit today. And I know that politicians ignore court rulings that, for example, States are unconstitutionally under-funding schools. But creative legal actions can be helpful both to publicize rotten and sometimes illegal public policies, and sometimes to win victories against such policies.
Where is the progressive organization committed to using law, wherever possible, to achieve positive goals, to block dangerous policies like vouchers, and to work with activists to achieve positive change?
This is such a huge mess!
There are going to be riots because thousands were promised that money.
Im so realized because it wasn’t going to be regulated in any way and it would just be fraud after fraud and line after line of everyone everywhere wanting a check for 13 years.
Yes, true Angie, but as they well know, what is a promise from Governor Sunny and his band of cronies worth? They told the rest of us a lot of things and made promises too! The only ones they keep are to their big business cronies like Warren Buffet and Nevada Energy, Tesla, and the Chinese billionaires.
