Mercedes Schneider really liked reading David Hursh’s new book, The End of Public Schools: The Corporate Reform Agenda to Privatize Education.
He identifies the major players in the corporate reform movement: Bill Gates, Arne Duncan, Pearson, and many more. He sees the clear linkage between high-stakes testing and privatization.
We can’t let this happen.

“Corporate Reform” in order to make more consumers of the contributing corporations products? What happened to a general liberal arts education, where at the end a student could go and buy a small farm and grow and sell food, make a living and be a positive contributor to society? Bill G and others believe everybody should learn code and become a digital-participant in the “new economy”, where everybody just creates and uses digital media and products.
Yah, right, like we will evolve one day to the point where food production is a thing of the past??? Really, students today don’t need all the high-end math and science (and I teach high end math and science), if they believe and choose to go out and get a certificate in a specialty(ex. radiology technician) and start their careers there (or go out and work on a farm and eventually run a farm).
The myth that curriculum must be digital and “cutting edge” is promoted by those that want to replace teachers and books with their hardware and software. Sorry, but after teaching math and science for 25 years, I don’t buy the concept, or the product.
