Renowned researcher Gene Glass reports that teachers at some virtual charter schools are responsible for more than 1,000 students at a time.
I’m willing to bet that the school in question operates for profit.

This is what the MOOC & K-12 enthusiasts mean by “personalized” learning.

Really depressing, because we were just assured by lawmakers and charter promoters that there would be a sincere effort to improve and (start) regulating the “charter sector” and the online charters are unregulated money mills.

Florida Virtual does this and teachers have to be available by phone and computer daily from 8 am to 8 pm. It is not a for profit school but the State is saving a killing by raising the class loads significantly thus reducing the number of teachers needed for hire. The sad part is teachers in Florida Virtual are paid more than teachers in traditional public schools even though both are designated as Public Schools and governed by the Florida Department Of Education.

I can’t speak personally to 1,000, but I don’t doubt it, either. I can definitely confirm over 600. The only way they get away with this (aside from teachers desperate for work, even without health insurance or other benefits) is the assumption, accurate, that a goodly number of those 1,000 won’t ever turn in any work — effectively reducing the class loads to one a P/T instructor can have a hope of handling.

FROM the teacher in the article: “By the way, I am not receiving more compensation for this huge case load of students. I do not have a contract. I am paid $20,000 a year less than I was paid when I left my brick and mortar school. Connections Learning teachers do not receive retirement benefits. There is no union for virtual teachers. ”
SUCKA!
TO the teacher in the article: Have you no sense of dignity, ethics or morals?
