Bob Braun listened to Chris Christie’s announcement of his candidacy for the GOP nomination, and he was struck by Christie’s peculiar version of the “American Dream.”
While other candidates–past and present–spoke of fleeing religious persecution, tyranny, and privation to find refuge in America, Christie spoke of fleeing a racially-changing Newark for the comfort of an all-white suburb.
Braun writes:
“The Christie family did not escape from English monarchs who insisted on a state religion. Not from revolutions in southern Europe. Not from the potato famine. Not from the czar. Not from pogroms or the Holocaust. Not from grinding poverty. The Christie family escaped from black families moving into the neighborhood–new neighbors whose ancestors were brought to this country as slaves in chains. The Christies did not face the unknown wilderness or the known hostility of earlier settlers. They faced the grass, the open space, the all-white neighborhoods, of Livingston, New Jersey.
“I cannot speak for people of color but I can imagine the pain many must have felt when Christie told the adoring and mostly white crowd at Livingston High School, “I’m here in Livingston because all those years ago, my mother and father became the first of either of their families to leave the city of Newark to come here and make this home for us.”
“Not Jamestown. Or Plymouth. Or Ellis Island. Livingston.”

SMH, he is so delusional he doesn’t even realize what he is saying. Or worse, maybe he does.

For someone who has consumed more than $70,000 of sports stadium snack food and continually uses a state helicopter to whisk himself away to his son’s tournaments, all on the tax payer tab with his governor’s allowance, I don’t think Chris Christie has achieved the American dream; he has created the American nightmare, and he needs to be hurled naked into a hungry den of wolves somewhere in the Jersey Pine Barrens.
Chomp, snap, gush, and slurp . . . . .

He is far from alone. They ALL do it and they ALL do it on the tax payer’s dime. The only elected official I know that has given BACK is Ron Paul. He never participated in the pension or health program and gave back 50% of his office budget each year. And for that he has been given no credit….of course he didn’t expect any either but in court of public opinion we tend to pick and chose who we wish to denigrate. I am not a Christie fan by any stretch of the imagination but lets be fair. Have the rest of the candidates in the pool given back or have they taken just like Christie.

Karen Bracken,
I completely agree with you about this, but your notions of starving public schools by homeschooling every child in the USA and doing away with compulsory education is extremist and radical.
No thanks. It’s very Tea party-ish.
I am a public school teacher, and I work very hard, far beyond my contract, in good faith, and I achieve very effectively for and with my students, who are low income. I put in 12 hour days and far too often spend more time dealing with my students’ affairs than with my wife. Please don’t throw out the baby with the bath water.
Hurl your anger to the elected officials who don’t spend our tax dollars wisely and to the uber rich who don’t pay their fair share of taxes and who horde the wealth and corrupt our government. Please do not waste your intellect on teachers and educators because it only lessens your credibility.

Christie asked of a schoolteacher: “What do you people want anyway?”
I can’t speak for that teacher but this is what I want, and I want it badly:
I want Chris Christie to lose the presidential election and to know that “you people” had a big part in it.
(It’s not nice to call names but I have such a compulsion to call Christie a _ _ _ _ _ _ _.)

Should there have been a different article in front…say “an” instead of “a?”

Oh please and I guess Obama and so many others suffered. Most of our elected officials lived a charmed life and besides it is the hard knocks that make a people stronger if they utilize them to their fullest potential. Hard knocks is what should give us wisdom and the desire to change our lot in life. I am not a Christie fan but I think we are grabbing at straws with this article.

Karen,
Hard knocks without a robust support system in place hides behind its real name: brutality.
I am not an Obama fan because he is not a real progressive except for maybe LBGT issues.
But for the rest of us, where is the fiscal justice?

Does Christie’s perspective represent the “soft bigotry of political aspirations?”

Without a doubt, Christie is the worst NJ governor in many decades as regards education and educational policy. He is the quintessential anti-education governor. He has been on the attack against NJ public schools, their teachers and especially their unions from day 1. His attacks on the NJEA have been especially venomous. You would not know that NJ has highly rated public schools by the way Christie demeans, demonizes and bashes our (NJ) public schools and the hard working teachers in those schools. He has actually said hateful things against the teachers, not just the NJEA.
Christie is totally on board for school privatization, charter schools and school vouchers. Christie has worked hard to destroy teacher unions, tenure, seniority, LIFO (Last In First Out), teacher pensions and health benefits.

Chris Christie has been a lousy governor and is a lousy candidate for governor. That his family was part of the middle-class white flight from NY/NJ metro area in the ’60’s does not make him unusual in the slightest (although the $10k family gifts do). That he chooses to blab about it as some sort of American Dream scenario is a cynical shows him for the smug egotist and bragadoccio he is.
