According to news reports, Governor Tom Wolf will replace Bill Green, chairman of the Philadelphia School Reform Commission, with fellow member of the commission, Marjorie Neff.
Governor Wolf had asked the Commission not to approve any new charter schools because of the city’s dire financial situation, but it approved five new charters. Neff was the only commissioner to oppose all five charters. She is a former principal of a district high school.
Green says he will challenge his removal in court.

I think those of us in PA who support decisions that Governor Wolf is making in support of public education should send him a quick note of appreciation.

The national Democratic party would benefit from Gov. Wolf’s inclusion in the slate of presidential candidates.

I just spent a couple days at the U Penn Ethnography in Education Research Forum where I felt privileged to learn about the work being done with Philadelphia youth by Nick Palazzolo and others at Temple’s University Community Collaborative. It’s worth a few minutes of your time to see these young people using media tools to give voice to their concerns, fears, anger and priorities: http://uccollab.org/videos/

Is this Corbett’s way of extending his reach beyond his term?

Gee, fired “without cause”, and I’ll bet Green wants to abolish teacher tenure.

Removing tenure for thee but not for me. Speaking of, TN is instituting a higher ed de-tenure process for higher ed.

I think it was completely and utterly predictable they would go after higher ed next.
It’s like how anti-private sector labor union laws follow immediately after anti-public sector union laws: IN. MI, WI. Next will be IL.

Wolf cannot “fire” Green. He removed him as Chairman of the SRC. Green is still on the SRC.

The SRC chairman, Bill Green, has been replaced by Gov. Wolf with Marjorie Neff, SRC member and former principal of the Masterman school, one of the premier academic public schools in Philadelphia where all the schools have been starved for resources and staff by the legislature and the former Governor, Corbett. Since taking office in January Wolf had wanted the SRC to not approve any new charter schools for Philadelphia considering the financial crisis there, but the Green-led SRC approved 5 new charters just last week; Neff was the only member to vote against every charter application. Green was appointed chairman by former Gov. Corbett.
Wolf is that rare Democrat governor – one who is truly a Democrat. He clearly wants and appreciates the support of teachers.

It’s funny. If the only reasons he can be removed for are malfeasance or misfeasance, what did he do to earn that “protection” which he would argue against for teachers.
Is this now a lifetime appointment so long as he doesn’t do anything legally wrong?
Is there any other Governor appointed position that either can’t be changed after the Governor leaves (ever?) and that isn’t subject to an election at all?

It appears to be a term appointment, with statutory limits on the governor’s power to remove members before their term has expired.

Green’s education credentials, “traded options and futures”.
Wall Street’s education policy bites the hand that feeds the nation and it destroys the engine that drives long term productivity and builds national wealth. Wall Street’s record on wealth creation (GDP) and wealth diffusion is abominable. Their education lies are, ones of convenience, to generate short term profits for the 0.1%.

Former Philadelphia superintendent of schools (and former Maryland superintendent of schools) David Hornbeck wrote an essay in the Baltimore Sun warning Maryland off the charter train wreck..

Even more interesting because two of his sons are charter school principals here in Baltimore.
