A group of parents in Montgomery County, Maryland, have started a Change.org petition, urging the school board to renew his contract. Starr has been an outspoken critic of high-stakes testing and test-based accountability for teachers. They urge you to sign their petition.

This is a chance for the effected communities to express their support or not. they are closest to the controversy and more likely to understand what is actually going on.

I should mention that I believe some opposition to Josh Starr in MD comes from the more traditionalist side of the Math Wars. He’s identified by some of them as “too fuzzy.” And those folks do NOT take prisoners, believe me. When they think someone supports the “wrong” sort of math teaching and/or books, they go for blood. So I can’t say I’m surprised to see him under attack by some parents. His stance on a lot of issues goes against their grain and very much so.

I think that I signed the petition. I did not see verification after trying several times.

It would be nice if commenters from MOCO would let us know their connection.
I say that cecause in my district, our superintendent was ousted in November – many of us believe a good thing.,but if you were from off and read the local media, you might get a completely different take – that we had lost a star. We didn’t. We consider her leaving a reward for a lot of effort.
So for all we’ve read about Starr, do we know the real story? Is there a PAA affiliate there?
Speculation won’t be enough if he becomes a candidate in your own district.

Why is it that I feel like I am putting myself on a dangerous list when I sign these petitions? Almost like stating I’m a communist or something. Is it possible that someone is compiling all of our names for some evil purpose, some day?

I just signed the petition, as a recently retired Montgomery county school teacher of 28 years. Despite my many concerns about where the county has been headed (most of which started before Starr arrived), I believe he brings a level of thoughtfulness to his work that, given enough time, would lead to really constructive change. I especially appreciate how clear he has made it, through dialogue with the community and his book club readings/sessions, that he sees children as much more than walking test scores.
He clearly wants to address the WHOLE child. The job description for county school superintendent is unrealistically overwhelming; whatever Starr’s shortcomings might be, facing such a super human task, I am reminded of the importance of not making the perfect the enemy of the good.

Who is the Parents’ Coalition of Montgomery County? They seem to be rather vocal on this issue, but it is a mystery of who they actually are. I could no find them in the IRS register of tax exempt organizations or for that matter any information who is on their board.

I don’t think they’re MCPS parents anymore. I remember someone who said she was from the Parents Coalition went to the BOE around a decade ago and dropped some old clothing right on the BOE table. I guess it was a kind of protest?
