I heard and saw Leonard Cohen sing at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn about a year ago. I am embarrassed to say that I didn’t know his music. Now I love it. Enjoy this Christmas version of one of his greatest songs.

With your ‘discovery of Leonard Cohen you have entered into a generative music and poetry relationship that will continue to yield fruit for many years. Of course, this greatly pleases me, as I have listened to and Cohen and followed his journeys since ‘way back in the day’ of the mid 1960s.

Leonard’s is so much better and not so “Jesusy”. If you are someone who doesn’t need some mythological figure to force you to be good, celebrate this holiday with veracity not marketing:
For Michael Brown, Eric Garner. . . the NYPD? They ought to listen rather than draw more guns.
“Maybe there’s a God above
But all I’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
It’s not a cry you can hear at night
It’s not somebody who has seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah . . .
did my best, it wasn’t much
I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch
I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I’ll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah . . .”

Happy Holidays, Diane. I didn’t discover Leonard Cohen until later in life as well. What a beautiful gift to send to us.
It has been a tough year for me as I fought on the home front to remind my superiors that we have a union contract that must be adhered to. Then, I was bullied by 2 co-workers who resent the fact that I support our union-without fear. I stood up for union rights and now I stand alone. But I have the satisfaction from knowing that I did the right thing.

Debra,
Be strong and know that you followed your conscience without fear. There is. Strength in numbers and in solidarity.

Diane, Maybe you heard Leonard Cohen’s songs in the past but just didn’t know they were written by him because, initially, others sang them. Judy Collins popularized many of his songs in the 60s, including “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye,” “The Sisters of Mercy” and “Suzanne” –which they sang together in the 70s here:
