The Network for Public Education needs your help today, December 2. We are running a national fundraiser on social media.
Learn more about NPE here.
The NPE exists to support public education as a cornerstone of our democracy, to elevate and defend the teaching profession, and to protect children against the abuses of high-stakes testing and data mining. We oppose the status quo of testing, school closings, and privatization. We advocate policies to improve public education, such as class size reduction, evaluation of teachers by peer review, no-stakes diagnostic testing, student privacy, and universal early childhood education.
We endorse candidates who support public education.
We are sustained by our friends, allies, and members. The money that we raise will be used to help pay for our annual conference, which will meet in Chicago on April 25-26. Please put the date on your calendar and plan to join us for an exciting event.

I think that the NPE is a fine organization and will donate to this group. Hopefully, a good deal of needed money will come their way. I do have a question, however, for not only NPE members, but anyone reading this blog since those who do have a great deal of insight into current education policy.
Now that Republican Senator Lamar Alexander, a former Secretary of Education, is the incoming chairman of the Senate committee overseeing education, how will his appointment impact current education policy?

Are we going into a new era of education reform? At the very least, I think this is a fascinating turn of events.
Your thoughts are appreciated!

Is the Network for Public Education a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4)? If it is the latter, is there a list of the major funders?
Transparency is an important requirement of effective giving.

“The NPE exists to support public education as a cornerstone of our democracy…”
“Abraham Lincoln characterized democratic government as “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” Democratic government is about public purposes.”
“This is the great advance of democratic government. Other forms of government serve the few at the expense of the many, and their resources are marshaled to serve the private purposes of those on whom government has bestowed privilege.”
“The most fundamental feature of democratic government is equality under the law. Equality under the law means that none can be viewed as having greater right under the law than others. This principle is captured by the following:
What government does for one, it should do for all, and what government does not do for all it should do for none.”
1882 James Madison: “A popular government WITHOUT popular information, or the
means of aquiring it, is but a prologue to a farce or tradegy, or perhaps BOTH. Knowledge
will forever govern ignorance, and people who mean to be their own governors must arm
themselves with the power knowledge gives.”
Hence the “cornerstone of democracy” is tasked with establishing “civic literacy”.
A “literacy” or consciousness to provide a balance between confusion and illumination.
Just as “The greatest enemy of knowledge is NOT ignorance, it is the ILLUSION of
knowledge”, “To imprint ideas or opinions, in the strict sense of the word, PREJUDICES,
on the mind of a child, is NOT education.”
Education is vital to assist any thinking person with overcoming irrational prejudices
and (or) beliefs.
Arguing from ideology, dogma, or lofty illusions, rather than the EVIDENCE, solves
NOTHING. If we WANT to change what IS, we must speak of what is.
