Mercedes Schneider, high school teacher, debates Common Core with a state representative and a representative of the pro-voucher group Black Alliance for Educational Options. Mercedes explains who BAEO is, then engages in 6 minutes of debate in which the two men were pro-Common Core and Mercedes was critical. Does 2 vs. 1 sound unbalanced? At least there was some disagreement. A few days ago, there was a well-publicized forum on Common Core that included Merryl Tisch, chair of the Board of Regents; John King, state commissioner; Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers; Carmen Farina, Chancellor of the New York City public schools; and one or two others. Every member of the panel supported Common Core. Some debate.

Yes, some debate that must have been with an all CC panel. Did Cuomo put that together, so he wouldn’t even have to show up? Or maybe it was King — didn’t want any heckling or intellectual dissonance within the panel, just a good clean work product to be scored appropriately, however he wants.

Did Mulgrew preface his affirmations or light constructive criticism with, “Can you smell what I’m cooking?!!” Followed by brotherly body slams and faked pile drivers in imaginary dirt, as threats to anyone anti-CC in the audience?

I admire her writing, but if she’s going to do TV, she needs to sharpen and more tightly focus her talking points….and develop the equivalent of an “elevator pitch,”

As I wrote (sarcastically) on her blog: Where’s your power suit and tie!?!?

TV is show biz, even a news program. It’s all theater, costume included. Given that, rehearsal helps. She can still bring all her passion, but she needs a tighter script. I’m on her side.

Yes, very much so. She should have allowed her opponents a few more on their side. 😉

When they debate Mercedes, they need at least 5-1.

The debate seems like 3 vs.1. The anchor person does not seem to give her much time to make her point in detail–he even tried to interrupt her talking point in an attempt to shift the focus in favor of the other two. I saw Mercedes turn her face to Kenneth Campbell, president of BAEO, several times, and gave him a “Oh-please-stop-talking about-you-are-supporting-needy-children-BS!?” look several times.

We don’t need the canned pablum of CCSS supporters, not matter how well-modulated their voices and pleasant their appearance and pr-tested their spin. We need authentic voices, informed citizens, passionate educators, arguing for a “better education for all” that are not afraid to speak the truth about CCSS mediocrity and its toxic [required] high-stakes standardized testing.
From the bottom of my heart, KrazyMathLady, on a scale of one to ten, riffing off Chiara’s wonderful phrase—
Your voice is my choice.

P.S. Anybody out there still wondering why folks like Michelle Rhee and David Coleman do not allow themselves to engage Diane Ravitch in public dialogue? Wonder no more…
