RE: Testing Resistance & Reform News
DATE: June 24, 2014
What a week!
The impacts of “Testing Resistance & Reform Spring” protests reverberate across the nation with more states suspending testing requirements or pulling out of testing consortia. Bill Gates’ call for a moratorium on some consequences from Common Core exams, quickly implemented by some political allies, reflects another way grassroots power is forcing policy elites to backpedal. To take advantage of this opportunity, parents, educators, students, and community activists need to step up advocacy campaigns to end standardized testing misuse and press for implementation of higher quality performance assessments.
Remember that back issues of these weekly updates are archived at: http://fairtest.org/news — let me know if you want to be added to the regular distribution list

Please add NEW MEXICO to this list, whose parents, educators, and public officials – including our Democrat Governor candidate, GARY KING are finally “getting it”. King is running against the harmful Susana Martinez.
Enjoy the blog by Kris Nielson and be sure to listen to Gary King – on video – as he responds to Daniel Hornbergers film “Standardized Lies, Money & Civil Rights – How Testing is Ruining Public Education.

And remember, NEW MEXICO is where 2012 NM Senate Memorial 73, Study Costs of All School Assessments, sponsored by Majority Leader Senator Michael Sanchez, was passed and signed. The memorial had input from Monty Neill at the Nat’l Center of Fair and Open Testing.
NM SM 73 was foundational for a 2012 AFT resolution which resulted in the “Testing More, Teaching Less: What America’s Obsession with Student Testing Costs in Money and Lost Instructional Time” (2013) report, and a New Business Item presented at the NEA 2012 Convention.
Don’t forget about us … it’s often a lonely battle against big forces (Hanna Skandera -> Jeb Bush and Susana Martinez -> Koch Brothers) out here. But the resistors are growing stronger everyday!

Excellent Veteran Teachers are being systematically fired for no cause in Wisconsin. What is going on there? Could it be the beginning of New Orleans style school reform? Down here we call it school “deform”.
