I had a very exciting day in our nation’s Capitol today.
Randi Weingarten and the American Federation of Teachers invited me to spend a day in D.C. And offered to set up meetings with members of the education committee in both houses. At the end of he day, the AFT hosted a reception.
I took the train to D.C. to avoid the uncertain weather of recent days, and spent 2 hours on the train writing blogs.
The train arrived a bit before 10, and I went directly to meet with Congresswoman Gwen Moore of Milwaukee. She is well-informed and warm; she remembered me from my last visit in 2010. I was fortunate to have an escort from the AFT to make sure I got to my meetings.
All my conversations were off the record, so all I can share is that I was very candid, and so were the members of Congress.
I next saw Congresswoman Marcia Fudge of Cleveland, who is very sharp. That too was a very pleasant meeting.
Then on to see Congresswoman Rosa de Lauro, who has a key position on the appropriations committee. She is a wonderful, kind, and delightful woman.
After a fast sandwich, we went to the Senate, where I had the pleasure of meeting Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin–imagine, a Democratic senator from Wisconsin! And then we met Senator Elizabeth Warren, of Massachusetts, who is very impressive.
Here is the news: George Miller of California, Democrat of California, announced his resignation a couple of weeks ago. Miller was a huge fan of testing and charters, as well as an architect of NCLB. Next in line was Rob Andrews, but today he unexpectedly announced he too was retiring. So very likely the next top Democrat on the House education committee will be Representative Bobby Scott of Virginia, a liberal Democrat.
Things should get interesting in D.C. We have friends in high places.

A very cool day, Diane. 🙂

Finally! A liberal Dem heading up Ed policy in the House! We’ve had a DINO (Miller) for decades. I hold Miller more responsible than anyone else for buying the right wing line and imposing the horrors of NCLB and RTTT on America’s schoolchildren. He should have been protecting American education, not selling us out!
Thanks for everything you do, Diane!

Dear Parents,
We started our state writing assessments yesterday. Everything flowed smoothly. Today the online portal crashed statewide. As a result, today’s testing had to be stopped and no juniors scheduled for testing today were able to complete testing. We have been told there can be no testing done tomorrow either. We hope to resume testing on Thursday. Students who were originally supposed to test today will test Monday, February 10, 2014 and students who were supposed to test tomorrow will test Tuesday, February 11, 2014. We will keep you posted related to any other possible changes.
Thanks so much for your patience with us. We planned this one down to the smallest detail and then technology failed us. It is frustrating but we will regroup and make it work. Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Carrye Holland

Thank you, Diane for all that you do to keep us informed. Thank you too for fighting for teachers and children to put teaching and learning back on the right track. Rather than wasting time and money on evaluations, testing and different schools, we need to work together to keep kids and their parents intrinsically motivated and invested in education.
In CT they praised a recently opened private school that cut their enrollment in half. The other students were redistributed to our school in which we now have 29 students in each class. Without equity in all aspects of education, things can not be justly compared anyway.

slight correction. Miller is not chair, because Republicans control the House. He is ranking member. Since Scott is also a Democrat, unless the Dems take control he also would only be ranking member

I believe it is important that Hillary Clinton be pressed for a clearer picture of what her view is of the testing and charter and voucher issues………is she going to lead us to higher and higher platitudes?

I agree that Hillary needs to be pressed on issues regarding education……… and that she probably will lead us to higher and higher platitudes (took me a minute). I don’t expect any elected politician to be a leader on education issues. They have to be led to where we want them to go so they can jump out in front when the time is right. It would be interesting to know how many of our elected officials even attended public schools.

Hey, Wisconsin had a fantastic Democratic senator in Russ Feingold! Until he got tossed out in the conservative wave and was beaten by that complete tool Ron Johnson. Here’s hoping Feingold beats him in the upcoming election. I hear he’s running.

Way to go, Diane. I agree with many others- all your hard work and of others who are writing letters, spreading the word about education…it’s all paying off and our children and grandchildren will benefit. I see that there are some people organizing a protest of Michelle Rhee on Thursday. The Minnesota reception they give her may be extra chilly.

DC is my favorite city.
I can’t say how grateful I am that you are willing to speak out against the insanity facing public education in the current political climate. I can think of no better place to speak out then in the halls of Congress. Hopefully your message rings true to those who can do the most good in changing the current course of action.
Please, Diane, keep up the fight. Your voice is the echo of our voices. In solidarity, and thanks.

I’m confused. Is this particular post another endorsement of Randi Weingarten?
A previous post on this blog (January 31, 2014, “Gates Foundation Cheers the Growing ‘Momentum’ of Common Core”) noted that Vicki Phillips of the Gates Foundation has written (again) about why American public education is in dire need of the Common Core.
Interestingly, in March of last year (2013), Phillips penned an article with Randi Weingarten (who gets defended often on this blog) in which they opined that it was critical for American public education to “align teacher development and evaluation to the Common Core state standards.” Phillips and Weingarten made the preposterous claim that it was absolutely essential that the “mission” of public schooling “must evolve from an outmoded model of education that exists in too many places to a new paradigm that will prepare students for life, college, and career.”
http://www.newrepublic.com/article/112746/gates-foundation-sponsored-effective-teaching
I’ve noted before that the Sandia Report (1993) – issued in the wake of A Nation at Risk – examined the allegations that public education was “broken” and “in crisis” –– that it needed a “new paradigm” –– and concluded that:
* “..on nearly every measure we found steady or slightly improving trends.”
* “youth today [the 1980s] are choosing natural science and engineering degrees at a higher rate than their peers of the 1960s.”
* “business leaders surveyed are generally satisfied with the skill levels of their employees, and the problems that do exist do not appear to point to the k-12 education system as a root cause.”
* “The student performance data clearly indicate that today’s youth are achieving levels of education at least as high as any previous generation.”
Randi Weingarten needs to stop playing both ends against the middle. She needs to get off the fence. She is either FOR the Common Core (a stand she’s taken publicly), or she’s OPPOSED to it (and all the testing it requires).
I’m wondering which it is.

Diane: Good going in DC! You know I am CT. All CT House members and Senators are our education and nutrition, housing, health care friends — the full package for raising healthy educated children. Did you know Rosa is a multimillionaire? After Blumenthal, Himes, comes Rosa among our delegation. AFT did a brilliant favor for you. Push NEA to do the same. We need to get your message into Congress in the worst states like Michigan and you know the rest.
Be well we need you!
