The National Opportunity to Learn campaign, working with Kevin Welner of the National Education Policy Center, adapted the well-known children’s game “CandyLand” into an infographic called “CharterLand.”
It is a very vivid illustrations of the strategies that many charters now use to weed out students they don’t want, the ones likely to get low test scores or to defy their “no-excuses” policies.
Open it up, and you will see tens of thousands of words condensed into a graphic and familiar game board.

it’s a perfect parody as it lampoons the game that is the bane of every parent’s existence– a silly, colorful, board game with absolutely no point except the randomness of who wins. The kids love it though– they are easily impressed to be playing something that seems like a grownup game. Kind of perfect for the points it makes about “reform”really. And a very creative way to call attention to the vital work of the NEPC.

I loved Candyland as a little kid, especially the colorful graphics on the choice cards. It was a game that even the littlest could win. Unfortunately, Charterland is a no-win game for too many. Too few of the “choices” send you to lollipop land.

And Charterland is different from Magnet[school]land in what way?

I wish the real charter land was exactly that, only a game, at least as charters have evolved. Had they been what they were intended to be they would have been a much needed and great addition to education. Many students have real problems of all kinds which are too deep and involved for a teacher in a crowded classroom with other students with real problems to adequately address. That is the way they were SUPPOSED to be but now the camel has his nose under the tent.

They forgot to put a space/spaces on the board that said, “Sorry, you must leave. Charter school closed due to administrative incompetence, thievery and just plain not being a REAL school. Go find another school for your child!”
In fact, a 2nd Edition of the game could be a version of the game “Sorry!”
