Might Makes Right When Viewing LAUSD and California Nepotism…..or does it?
By Ellen Lubic, Educator and angry taxpayer
Yesterday, the Los Angeles Times printed two stories that affect public school education, and those who ‘dabble’ in it. One was by journalist Howard Blume on the Billion Dollar iPad scandal at LAUSD, and the other was written as an op-ed team by Eli Broad and Richard Riordan, two of our always prominent LA billionaires.

This tag team, who own between them the wealth of a small nation, self-describe their activities, generosity, and community spirit, as the most major of philanthropists. It seems to be a rationale of why the majority of us should love, cherish, and probably obey, America’s billionaires. This self-serving op-ed, comes on the heels of the Times finally allowing Blume to recently print truth about what is happening to taxpayers, students, parents, and generally, public education in our community. It was at very least a ‘quid pro quo’ day at the Times, with the ipowerful billionaires getting their half page of self aggrandizing space, and the rest of us getting to read some accurate information about the farce Supt. Deasy, Eli Broad’s chosen/mandated guy, has once again perpetrated on us all.

Today, we get more bad news, but now about LAUSD School Board President, Richard Vladovic, regarding charges that not only were made 13 years ago on his management style, but that were carefully reviewed some months ago. Vladovic today apologized for things said in anger. So why bring them up again now?
http://www.scribd.com/mobile/doc/174490330#fullscreen
With the amazing behind-the scenes power that Broad and Riordan have with their battery of O’Melveny and Meyers legal team, and their best in the world Public Relations team, they seem certainly to be able to join with Deasy to create a new ‘spin’ to deflect We, the People, from focusing on the huge waste of our tax money and the ongoing deficiencies of their chosen Superintendent Deasy.
The possibly sweetheart iPad deal made for the over-retail cost Apple iPads, with Deasy having been entangled with Apple both as a stockholder and on an employee level wherein Apple used him in their ads to promote the iPads, and with the Deasy/Broad resigned Asst. Supt. Jaime Aquino having worked for the British corporation, Pearson, which made endless millions with their Common Core software for the iPads, and who knows how much more secret dealing, all this should alert the public who pays the freight for all these bad decisions.
Looking purely at costs to the public, not at ethics, these fiasco deals that we now know about, and factoring in the multitude of lawsuits against LAUSD from teachers in teacher jail which are never publicized, are all costing us a fortune of our hard-earned tax money. The clear evidence of terrible management of LAUSD should certainly be obvious to all, and present the only solution, to rid the district of these managers and do a national search for managers who are not tainted by being trained by the Broad Academy to be corporate CEOs rather than academic leaders of our public schools.
To add to this egregious LA nepotism, we learn today that our new Mayor Eric Garcetti, compounds his position of appointing charter school supporter, Ms. Melendez (with her own sweetheart deal surrounding her pay check, by staying on the LAUSD payroll although working for Garcetti, to eventually have the highest level of pay for her retirement 10 years from now) to lead his Dept. of Education.
http://laschoolreport.com/la-unified-board-expected-approve-marquez-bond-committee/
Today we learn that he has appointed Mrs. Abigail Marquez ( holdover from the Villaraigosa days), his big campaign contributor and fund raiser, to be on the Construction Bond Committee (see LA School Report today for these stories, and the LA Times). This is the pseudo advisory Committee that approved using the Construction Bond funding for the IPads purchase in the first place. And this woman, when googled, shows no business nor academic background for this appointment.
We California taxpayers will be paying for the long outdated and obsolete iPads, with big interest, for the next 25 years as we pay off the Construction Bond. In addition, the new Mayor’s wife worked with/for Riordan some years ago to implement his charter schools. It does not take genius to figure this out, but it makes you wonder if only highly educated people with proven business acumen, and no personal axes to grind, should have oversight of our tax money, not rich housewives who get political perks for their donations to legislators.
Many folks will certainly be looking into the business connections of all these interrelated elected, appointed, and just plain uber rich, overlords who are mangling public education with the goal of turning our system of universal free education into a big free market investment opportunity. (Suggest everyone read the Tilson Blog Site to see how this hedge fund manager is working to this end…all of this info herein can be found online.)
We must also keep in mind how the input of our former Mayor Tony Villaraigosa, (an outspoken lover of charter schools, and soon to be a candidate for Governor of California, who now works for the questionable pyramid-run company Herbalife while his longtime pal Fabian Nunez works for charter promoter Michelle Rhee whose husband is Mayor of Sacramento where they closed 23 public inner city schools this year), whose cousin is now Speaker of the House in Sacramento, factors into all this. Tony saw to it that his billionaire contacts like Bloomberg and Murdoch and the Waltons sent considerable millions to influence the last LA School Board elections, to get pro-charter school candidates elected. That failed when Steve Zimmer and Monica Ratliff beat the billionaires, proving that you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.
It is seems like a game of Monopoly. Who owns “boardwalk”…who owns our public schools????
So, America, who says Los Angeles, and California, cannot compete for the dirtiest, most nepotistic, politics award?

Please make a correction. It was NOT Monica Garcia who beat the billionaires, but Monica Ratliff, a fact that Ms. Lubic is well aware of.

Yes, educator, I goofed. Please everyone, everywhere, accept my apology for this egregious typo. Ratliff, as I state below, is the great hope for change in the mess that is LAUSD. Please read my other comments below.

The billionaires in the LA school board race were defeated by Steve Zimmer and Monica Ratliff, not Monica Garcia (who was bankrolled by the same billionaires).

Everything you say is true, even the union, teacher’s union has brought into this money grab. One.of the UTLA officers was passing, not visiting, teacher jail the other day and this person actually said to me that what’s going on is not Deasy’s fault, he’s being controlled by outside money. EXCUSE Me! I rather not have my public school board controlled by privateers and most importantly, I really don’t want my union being an apologist for the worst superintendent LAUSD has ever had. Now you know why teachers are floundering in teacher jail and being removed without due process.

UTLA leadership is an oxymoron. Vote out Fletcher et al. Yes, they are dirty, but this is the only option for the incompetent imbeciles who pretend to work at union headquarters.

If that is true then Deasy should resign his position in protest. But, we know he is working for billionaires and not the people.

I apologize to all, and mainly to Monica Ratliff whom I wholeheartedly support, for this typo. Ratliff, a Columbia and Columbia Law School graduate, and inner city educator of wonderful skill, presents a real hope for change at LAUSD. Garcia, not.

When will the school board grow a pair and rid LAUSD of the filth and corruption which have plagued mostly poor, urban youth for decades? Deasy, et al are beneath contempt. His latest tactic is ordering principals and APs to lie to parents, telling them that rich Angelenos are against the ipads only because they don’t want poor kids to be able to compete with their own children. He is so malodorous that even the usual lapdog, yes boy administrators are vomiting over the stench of this pig.

Yes Truth Teller… this week’s Deasy/Broad spin is to say we are all bigots if we are outraged by his/their horrible decisions. Meanhwhile teachers languish in teacher jail without due process, careers
and families ruined. The election for new leadership of UTLA is very soon. Who is best to really represent teachers?

Ellen,
I have been following several candidates. Most of them talk the talk, but there is very little action. So far, Caputo-Pearl is my choice for prez. Although he is criticized for being affialiated with current UTLA leadership, he’s the only one who has actually done anything. He was responsible for the lawsuit against the district for targeting Crenshaw union activists. He has years of experience fighting the district on many issues and is intelligent.

I tend to agree with you about Caputo-Pearl.

The education opportunists come in every creed and color. Their greed and lust for power is what motivates them. I no longer believe in democracy after it has been revealed that billionaires are being allowed to undermine people and have puppets installed. Their lack of respect for democracy and people is nauseating.

Great post Ellen concerning the Kabuki Dance they do to try to convince us they are helping us while they are “Pigs in the slop pit” or as Cortines so well put it “LAUSD is a CASH COW.” This is a world wide cabal for all the cookies. It is a team effort against us. Ratliff needs to start acting like a real lawyer not what happened on the radio last week. Do not lie to the public when someone has the real documents you are supposed to have as they are directed from Aquino to the board. The documents say WILLFULLY and NEGLIGENTLY not just if you damage and lost it. Very different legal standard. There is so much new information on the iPad debacle nationwide I have delayed the release for a few days and then it drops internationally at the same time. Enough is Enough.
Ellen, that is a great piece on how this game works, and think about when you take that cabal Ellen has described and what they also do in all other sectors they can take from. People really need to do that critical thinking of putting the pieces together so people can understand it clearly.

Isn’t it illegal to use construction bonds for iPads? The ACLU or some other organization needs to file a lawsuit to stop LAUSD from implementing Phase 2 on October 30th and wasting another 250 million.
Sad to see that Garcetti is a sleaze just like his predecessor.

Garcetti has now appointed a friend and fund raiser, Mrs. Marquez, to the Construction Bond Committee. I don’t know if Mr. Marquez is a building contractor. This kind of political patronage is what causes so many bad results. People who have little experience are appointed to give input on things like paying for iPads using the funds from a bond issue. Any economics student would recognize that is a bad idea yet the Villaraigosa members on that Committee obviously okayed this ridiculous over priced purchase.
These folks generally are held harmless for being stupid…but maybe not if they are part of a sweetheart deal.
The LA Times did an article yesterday on Garcetti’s patronage appointments, and today they printed an angry letter saying he has a right to do this.
It is common practice, but this is why it is so hard to get an oversight committee made up of real members of the public to work with the School Board so as to search and vet multiple candidates for Supt. and Asst. Supt. who are not Broad Academy-trained corporate puppets.
Yes…it would be great if some excellent lawyers took this on pro bono.

Yes, it is illegal to use school construction bond money for iPads. It is illegal, in California, to use school construction bond money for any purpose than for school construction or any use on new classroom construction. It is also illegal to use bond money for any item of equipment that will not last 10 years. Tom Rubin, the consultant and lawyer, he says, for the Citizens School Construction Bond Oversight Committee, that because bonds can be used for library books they can be used for iPads, I have the article quoting him. Tom, library books last a very long time, textbooks and iPads do not. Haven’t you seen the articles nationwide about the iPads, including in England, not happening and for up to almost $2,600 each. Is it any wonder you had the hacks on the Oversight Committee approve $1,598.57 each? Want to say that is not true? Have a bad day Tom. You know me for years in your face about giving away for free with Connie Rice, the so-called civil rights attorney billions of dollars at 2-3 times the construction cost of L.A. County as listed in the Jan. 2008, Office of Public School Construction (OPSC) study of school construction costs. So, Tom, you are a crook and are busted once again. Now, let us see if that matters. I have someone looking right now for an attorney for that issue. Cross your fingers we get lucky and bust them. All of us are on the hook for this. If not for the Ravich Blog I would not know about these other districts and for not the net I would not know about England and many others also having the same problems with costs so high they bust financially many school districts worldwide. After all, what do you think they really are doing? Do you really think they want to help you? Are you really that foolish, or are you really that bought and sold.
Soon, that is what we are going to find out about LAUSD. Diane, THANK YOU FOR THIS BLOG.

George,
I saw you on YouTube where you verbally DESTROYED Monica Garcia and the board of ed. That needs to go viral! The look on Monica’s face says it all. She actually was ashamed. Deasy is simply a sociopath with no feelings for anything except greed. I truly believe that the Broadite reformers are deliberately trying to bankrupt LAUSD for the final takeover. How do we stop them from turning the school district into another Chicago or Philadelphia?

Taxpaying Truth Teller, I do that everytime I go to the board. I keep telling you that they cannot take the truth if you have the full documentation. You should see Deasy when he runs from the room sometimes when I come up to talk and the look on their faces says it all. I use their T.V. channel against the crooks.
By the way Zimmer got elected because I convinced Jeneen Robinson to not let Kate Anderson win by giving her 8,000 votes to Zimmer. Zimmer won by 1.8%, UTLA did not do that, Jeneen Robinson did that to not let the “Nader Effect” happen. The “Nader Effect” is letting your ego rule best practices for all. Did you know that Nader was given a large donation just before the Florida election in Bush-Gore.
Now to Ratliff. Somehow, Ratliff got through the primary and stopped Sanchez from taking it all at once. I understand she had somewhere over only $20,000. Then, after a period of time asking the Ravich Blog people to stop just talking about how important the race is and to step up to the plate and give money and support to start the taking down of the billionaires. She ended up with over $50,000 and the national support and the public reacted and she got elected, also by 1.8%. Several months earlier we stopped Measure J for $90 billion with about $20,000 and less than 3 weeks. This has never been done before. There are three examples against the largest power in the world and they were stopped. This means you can also. It is a program. It is an equation of their subconscious and how to warp it. They all have the psychology of preachers and cults. Easy to deal with if you know how.
Unfortunately Ratliff is not acting like an intelligent person or much of a lawyer as she had lied to the public on the radio and is bagged for it. If she wants to continue to lie she is going to continue to have a very bad day as I have already given her 3 times now. I really do not know what it takes for her to wake up. One thing for sure is she is not much of a lawyer. I was trained by the best homicide attorneys ever. I know investigation, law, procedure and the most important thing. Never talk about anything that you do not know everything about as there is someone like me out there ready to destroy you when you mess up and state documented lies. How do you think lawyers win cases? I have studied many and warfare also in all cultures and times of history in detail including an intimate knowledge of what they do now by following it in their journals for over 55 years. Any of you know what NetCentric is? Right now two board members are really stepping up to the plate and they are board president Richard Vladavic and board vice-president Steve Zimmer.
All in L.A. please read this: Monday, October 14 at 7:30 in the Venice High School Auditorium on Venice Boulevard Steve Zimmer is going to hold the first major Title 1 meeting for the public. This is a major event as LAUSD has been told by the Federal DOE that they have been breaking the Title 1 law for two years. Steve Zimmer has stepped up to the plate with the first Committee of the Whole in years where he brought in experts for the first time in years and they cut off the T.V. which is now installed again for all committee meetings and now the Title 1 meeting. Thank You Steve Zimmer for your concern for the students and parents no matter what the billionaires do. The administration of the Gatesmeister, the Broadfather, Walton, HP and such at LAUSD has declared war on the sitting 5-2 board of education. Is this insane or what? There is a major war brewing and you will see major battle when this iPad thing comes to a head with the information and documentation I am finishing right now. It is not only Apple that is corrupt but the Microsoft person who said they are their community relations person does not exist at Microsoft. How about that. I was going to help them even though I hate Gates and Windows 7 as this is business over the finances of many school districts as they are now paying about $2,300-2,500 for an iPad which fall apart, even in England, and is so bad districts are shutting down the programs after all this money for nothing.

George,
I have been following you for years, and I know plenty about the district as well. I also know that documentation is 100% of the law, as you say. The “reformers” are able to get away with these travesties because they play the ‘divide and conquer’ strategy with teachers. They are experts at bullying and manipulation and they get teachers to just quit under the pressure. Most teachers are not adept at the war strategies you refer to and the pigs at UTLA are so stupid that a CAT scan wouldn’t project their brains! Everyone in California is outraged at the ipad giveaway ($$ given away to Microsoft and Pearson), but I don’t see any consequences. The independent audit produced zero accountability for the former corrupt school board and Romer, et al. I agree that Vladovic is so far, the only one with enough determination to go against Deasy. I don’t have much respect for Zimmer, so far. I fear that the real goal is to bankrupt LAUSD and hire temps, like in Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, and Inglewood. The future of the US will once again, be a plantation economy with maybe a 10-20% middle class and 1 or 2% holding all the cards, or rather, dollars.

Taxpaying Truth Teller, thank you. We are not going to allow this to happen. Because of Aquino freaking out after Yolande Beckles from the California Title 1 Parent Union spoke at the Thursday Committee Meeting and after the way that Yolande and Walter Richardson and myself from CORE-CA laid it down at the Board Meeting on Tuesday and the Committee of the Whole and suddenly and without warning resigned that night we now have the billionaires on the run. By that Friday night CORE-CA had a letter to the LAUSD Board stating we have to have the public process for replacement of these high administrators as enough is enough. We want the Rubin Zacarias 1997 public process. No more sneak attacks of criminals, phony PHD’s and lack of concern for the public and especially the students. This is our, not your, district. Documents alone are not enough, attitude alone is not enough. It has to be the combination. You have to throw boulders through the plate glass windows to get their attention. Then you have to have the repair plan ready to go when you get their attention. You have to set the agenda, not them. Basic operational rules for all like those in N.Y. did to King when he tried to pull their chain. We have stopped the billionaires three times lately in L.A. It can and has been done. Now we need to finish the job everywhere at the same time. Think about how the Russians did in the Germans in Stalingrad. Remember? Read the “Art of War.” That is their bible. And if you really want to get good read the strategy of all the great battles and political maneuvers such as the Machiavelli’s.

Add the fact of our declining teacher’s union and you have a perfect storm against public education in Los Angeles we can only hope the courts start hearing some of these lawsuits the district is trying to delay and justice for teachers in jail comes soon.
