Governor Andrew Cuomo likes to say that the problems in New York are not about money, because the state spends enough already.
Governor, please read this analysis by Bruce Baker.
Despite years of promises, New York State has one of the most inequitable school finance systems in the nation.
We may be spending enough, but the funding is highly inequitable.
And the state’s neediest children have the least funding and the largest class size.
These disparities are inexcusable.

Jerry Brown is to be commended for proposing exactly the kind of overhaul to school funding we need in California. There are certainly details and implementation aspects to question about his plan, but it is a radical move in the right direction–fund all schools at a higher level, and direct additional funding to students with need, based on local control, not state program mandates.

Our district (Tupper Lake Central) is getting hammered this year because of the inequity in the Gap Elimination. If our budget goes down in a couple of weeks we’re cutting more positions and we’re bare bones as is. We’ll receive a million dollars less in State Aid this year than in 2009.
The sad thing is that Governor Cuomo doesn’t give a crap, nor does State Ed. Commissioner John King. They are consumed by their own personal agendas at the expense of quality public education. As far as our union (NYSUT) goes I have zero confidence our leaders in Albany are lobbying much in our behalf.
Sad days indeed……..

100 yrs ago Dewey indicated that “democ in education” required over-funding schls for the non-elite to compensate for accumulated past inequities. Still waiting.
