Eclectablog reports that the lame duck legislature in Michigan was set to pass a bill legalizing people to carry concealed weapons in schools, churches and elsewhere. But the shooting in Connecticut brought a pause. Apparently some of the gun zealots think that if principals and teachers were armed, they could have had a firefight in the school.
Others think it would be best to keep high powered weapons out of the hands of everyone but the police and military.
UPDATE: ACCORDING TO A REPORT FROM A READER (SEE BELOW), THE LEGISLATION HAS PASSED AND IS GOING TO THE GOVERNOR FOR HIS SIGNATURE.

It has passed the state legislature. it is awaiting the governor’s signature.

I’m just afraid of what might happen during a parent/teacher conference if a loose wire helicopter parent of a prince/princess doesn’t like what the teacher is reporting about their child! Whip out a handgun and BANG! One less teacher! MI Legislators are crazy!

That’s what we need untrained people with weapons in schools and having a real shootout with massive injured or dead people. How do you make sure you do not hit the wrong person? We have more than enough guns. Look at the crazy laws in Florida and such wherein you can just shoot anyone when you feel like it. How crazy are we going to get?

While I disagree with our legislature and don’t want any gun in school, concealed or not, Michigan is a nice place to visit and to live.

I, too, am in Michigan. I have been for all but 2 of my 44 years. It’s a nice place to visit. Northern Michigan is fantastic in the summers.
Living here is becoming an increasingly difficult chore for educators though. If Snyder passes much of what is in the Oxford Foundations recommendations, expect to see good and experienced educators change professions or leave to teach elsewhere.

I dont know about any of you, but the thought of my principal with a gun is a scary thought. There is reason a correction officers don’t wear guns in jails and prisons. Same idea applies to schools. Just a final thought many have expressed on this issue, the police officers in NYC fired many shots at the murderer from the Empire State Building and missed.

OMG! How far with the GOP go to endanger the rest of us with their irrational attachment to guns and the blood on their hands I feel they have for protesting sane regulations on fire arms! Guns in schools? You’ve got to be nuts to even listen to such blatant disregard for society by acting as though guns have no place they shouldn’t be allowed! Even Wyatt Earp made the cowboys check their guns at the city’s limits!

I’m not GOP nor a DIM and I don’t have an irrational attachment to my hunting guns. But I do believe that all citizens should have the right to have whatever weaponry the government has-ultimately it is the only thing to prevent a total takeover of our society by people who couldn’t care less about you and I.

Hey can’t you just see it? Every principal with a six shooter on their hip. PD for how to avoid crossfire in a school shoot-out. How kooky can the Repub party in Michigan get? I saw Bill Bennett on tv yesterday saying the principal should have had a gun for defense. The head of the Newtown school board said that in order to get to her office the principal would have had to pass the killer. People are ridiculous any more.

Snyder claims he is taking time to think about the bill. Well, I’m sure he’ll sign it once all the furor dies down.

If we are at the point where a principal or teacher has to be armed in a public school, then we have failed as a society. If we are that dysfunctional, then we have ceased to be a civilized society. The minute that a principal accidentally kills a pupil or a fellow employee, is the instant that that experiemnt in insanity will end. After the slaughter of innocents at Newtown, maybe we have ceased to be a civil or civilized society.

Last week TN Lt Gov, Ron Ramsey was crowing about his plans to introduce legislation to extend gun carry permits in cars at all times, everywhere- including schools, parks, businesses. Here’s the report from the Tennessean:

Today Gov Haslam, (who never bucks Ramsey) said he would be reviewing options for extending mental health services in the opening legislative session. This is good news for TN. It should be interesting to see how our TeaParty leg responds.

Currently Michigan law allows the carrying of non-concealed weapons into schools. Let’s say I go pick up little Billy from school and I legally walk down the hallway with a loaded shotgun in my hands, because you know I can. Now let’s say you are walking down the same hallway picking up little Sarah. What are you going to do? Now what are you going to do if you have a concealed weapon on you. Are you going to pull it out and point it at me. Because if you do I am surely going to point my gun at you because all I was doing was legally walking down the hallway with my shotgun and all of a sudden some guy I don’t even know is pointing a gun at me.
How about everybody leaves their guns at home. You can put on your tin foil hats and stand by the door with your arsenal to protect yourself from “tyranny” coming to get you. But, when you are outside let’s leave law enforcemt to Law Enforcement Officers.
