This article explains succinctly why certain members of the billionaire boys club have decided that Washington State absolutely positively must have charter schools. Their recipe for school reform: the free market. And why not? The free market works for them. Will they put their own children (or in the case of the Bezos family, grandchildren) in charter schools? Don’t be silly.

We continue to fight on in Washington State (even against Gates and his billionaire friends). I note that Mr. Gates has let his money talk for him as he has never, in the entire campaign, said one word about I-1240.
I also should point out that the Seattle Times, our only major daily, has endosed this initiative. This is their right but they have gone out of their way, in ways big and saml to push it. Wrong headlines, wrong initiative numbers, little things that confuse readers, they have done them all.
Thank you again, Diane. Even if they do win, there are many legal challenges to come.

Who owns the Seattle Times?

An guy named Frank Blethren who recently used his own ad space to promote the guy running for the Republican side for governor. Shameless.

Which is why I call it the Blethen Times, since it represents Frank Blethen, not Seattle.

I’m trying really hard to remember that charter schools have been voted down three times already and that the people of our state are independent and intelligent. I’m really worried, though. The PR firestorm this time around is astounding. So many people have no clue what this introduces to education in WA. On a happier note, many people I’ve talked to just needed to hear that charter schools will take money from public schools, and that seals the deal for their “no” vote. Crossing my fingers for Tuesday evening’s announcement.
