Nikhil Goyal was invited to participate in Education Nation.
He is a high school senior in New York who recently published a book (!) about education reform.
But read what he writes about how Education Nation treated students.

Next year, instead of grouping everyone into siloed town halls, the summit should feature all the stakeholders—students, parents, educators, policymakers, and administrators—all at the same table. It should address “student-led ideas, disruptive solutions, and true innovation.” Sessions on project-based learning and student-centered learning, changing assessment, and student ethics and cheating should be added. Along with Ravitch, Gardner, and Darling-Hammond, it should include experts doing important thinking and innovative work to ensure schools and students thrive in the 21st century—people like Alfie Kohn, Deborah Meier, Monty Neill, Jerry Mintz, Vicki Abeles, and Larry Rosenstock. Perhaps then we won’t have another year of folks ridiculing the event as “Mis-Education Nation.”
Many good points Nikhil, but I sincerely doubt NBC will make changes…maybe a slight few to appease. They are controlled by those in power with money..this was a corporate propaganda event timed with the release of Won’t Back Down…both were major flops. I wrote to NBC expressing my disgust. I don’t expect a response.
Ravitch, Gardner, and Darling-Hammond … Alfie Kohn, Deborah Meier, Monty Neill, Jerry Mintz, Vicki Abeles, and Larry Rosenstock
How have the above luminaries improved the quality of civics education for American students? Deb’s Forum for Democracy and Education colleague, George Wood, supported legislation that ultimately removed from Ohio social studies the goal that high school voters understand the duties of elected officeholders.
Students included at an education conference? Ha. We were lucky they invited a teacher #satire http://studentslast.blogspot.com/2012/08/breaking-news-teacher-invited-to.html
Rhee, Gates … Care to explain why the “student townhall” meeting was such a sham?
Last year I noticed how students with special needs were left out of the conversation at Education Nation so I wrote NBC about it. I’m convinced that it was no mistake and that indeed the powers that be have control of the spin.
Bravo to Nikhal! We need students speaking out as much as we do administrators, parents and teachers.
I think Ed Nation ignores the people who are real stakeholders.
Nikhail is becoming a true voice for education. Great to have him as an email buddy too 😉
