Do you have advice for Mayor Rahm Emanuel?
How can he end the impasse and do what is right for Chicago’s children?
Let him know.

My comment on his page:
Rahm, be a Democrat and side with teachers and students instead of your rich friends who want to siphon off our tax dollars into their profits with privatized charter schools.
When someone like Paul Ryan applauds your actions, you know you’re doing something morally bankrupt.
You probably know that the best study on privatized charter schools show that more do WORSE than regular public schools t
han better, and that’s even less impressive when you consider they don’t take their fair share of special education and behavior problem kids.
You don’t send your kids to a school where they are endlessly tested and their teachers are only judged on that criteria, so why are you pushing it on Chicago’s and America’s kids?
History will remember you as one of our most corrupt politicians whose actions crippled our democracy if you are remembered at all. I hope your insider stock tips and future career as a lobbyist, consultant, CEO, or board member of one of these “education” corporations is worth that.

Please listen to the teachers, Mr. Mayor, my friend. Always look and listen before you leap.

my comment to Rahm:
Your credibility on education issues is nil– why do you and so many other otherwise progressive/sensible Dems insist on throwing in with ALEC, Gates, Waltons, Kochs and all the the free-market privateers on education, leading to dumbing down and coporatization of our public schools? It makes no sense except you and your kids aren’t IN the schools. Mine are and it seems to me like y’all’re just creating a two-tier system, one for the haves, one for the have-nots, and with a nice layer of profits baked in to your corporate benefactors. And all under the banner of REFORM!? Sort of a joke, really. Thanks to the courageous teachers for standing up to this nonsense and Rahm, please read Ravitch and Darling-Hammond and stop the madness.

You’re assuming King, er, Mayor Emanuel cares what you think?

I am going to take a leap of faith as a lifelong Democrat, even if from SD, that Mayor Emanuel does care what I think. AndI think, Sir, that you should listen very closely to what teachers are saying. We are all, for the most part, truly about the children and what is best for them. Public schools aren’t perfect, but nor is any other type. Our country was founded on public education. It is important in our communities and for our citizenship. Help build sound public schools. Help them. Don’t rail against them. Help them. Public education is on the cusp…of what is partly up to what leadership hears us say and helps us do. We want what’s best for our kids and their futures. I beleive that. I hope you do as well. Help end the strike for the children.

The best news out there is that only 20% of Chicago voters like his education agenda and the way he is handling the strike. The media is not interviewing the parents that support the teachers and that is almost at 50% with 30% undecided.
I think Chicago parents will wise up the same way NYC parents have.
It’s just bad that this strike coincides with the opening of “the movie”. I much rather the box office receipts go to the new Clint Eastwood film t than “that movie”.
