I have resisted watching the ad that Michelle Rhee’s StudentsFirst created and played on NBC.
A reader sent it to me, and I relented.
It is disgusting.
It is a lie.
It smears America.
It smears our teachers and our students.
It makes fun of obesity.
It is homophobic (the flabby man in the ad is portrayed as effete and engaged in rhythmic gymnastics, an Olympic sport open only to women)
A few facts:
1) the US was never first on international tests. When the first test was given in 1964 (a test of math), our students came in 11th out of 12.
2) On the latest international tests, students in American schools with low poverty (10% or less) came in FIRST in the world
3) As poverty goes up in American schools, test scores go down.
4) The U.S. has the highest child poverty rate–23%– of any advanced nation in the world.
Michelle Rhee says nothing about poverty, which is the most direct correlate of low test scores.
She is shameless.

I used to resist watching awful stuff but then I remembered -keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
She has clearly crossed the line of dare I say..good taste..It’s one thing to debate your opponents and have open and civil dialogue but to create this piece of trash is beyond the pale.
I can’t understand why no one in the various media and/or those who supposedly speak for education like A.Duncan are not outraged.

This is also, in my opinion, very UnAmerican. Our educational system is in shambles. We need true leadership relying on solid research, not slick ads making fun of America and people who are struggling with weight issues and when I looked at the ad a second time I thought I detected the person might have been depicted as learning disabled but I was so annoyed I’m not sure about that.
Each time I think we have reached a new low, something like this ad appears.
Maybe if she is careful with her money she can run this ad on Super Bowl Sunday.

Oh, similar tactics have been used and for a couple of centuries now in the political arena. Go back and study some of the campaigning that was done in the early 1800’s, quite nasty and brutish. Been that way ever since.
What bothers me about many teachers and educators is that they want to separate the public school out from the political realm and that can never be as by definition “public” implies “political”. Public school teachers, in their minds, should never be “political”. Well that’s impossible because we are part and parcel of the political system even if we choose not to personally participate in it.
So the NEA is not a political organization that lobbies on behalf of public school teachers?
The NEA is a membership organization where people pay dues to belong.

I was tricked into membership in Rhee’s organization by signing a petition that didn’t mention her name or the name of her group.
Her members don’t pay dues, and I suspect that most of them don’t even know they are members.

Duane, I stand corrected on political ads but somehow it’s tolerated because most of the time it’s on an equal footing. Each side throwing mud at each other.

I don’t think politicians really pay much attention to the negative ads about themselves. it seems to be part of the wallpaper of politics.
This ad had a different tone. The media accepting of the ad as though it were a news story.

Quite right! The appeal to “American exceptionalism” in the add is disgusting to me. Oh, America was once great! We have to maintain our greatness but we can’t because the public schools and especially the teachers and UNIONS are ruining us!!
I get the same feeling when I see reports of comparing American public school test scores in the international realm. Oh No, we’re not number one!! Even though said scores and comparisons have no, absolutely none, basis in logical and rational thought due to a number of reasons, broken record time, as Wilson has pointed out.
Like a boil this ad needs to be lanced.
I used NBC’s website to post a complaint about this ad. I said it was tasteless. I will post on their Facebook page next. I don’t have a Twitter account, or I would tweet something. I don’t know if it will make a difference, but it’s something.
I did as well..sent an email to David Gregory and NBC right after Meet the Press ended on Sunday. Everyone should send something.

if any other company or organization would have put out an ad smearing any other American business or institution like this it would have been widely derided as insensitive at best, and unpatriotic at worst. Rhee is clearly shameless–more to the point, she isn’t at all interested in kids or education; this is all about making money off of the privatizing of our public schools, which requires destroying unions and demonizing teachers.

The irony is that Oprah always talks about how much she loves and respects teachers. Then she gave Gates and Rhee a major platform to air their “Waiting for Superman” propaganda.

We may not have millions of dollars, but we do have many creative and determined minds willing to work on making a difference. We all have access to social media, which can be used to apply relentless pressure on networks and sponsoring corporations that promote this type of advertizing. We also have the power of the purse, which can be used to boycott products from those same corporations. Small does not mean powerless, not when acting together in a concentrated effort that could go viral.
When I saw this ad I was beyond ticked. Too bad a counter ad can’t be produced by the NEA or AFT that shows the following:

Ms. Rhee’s husband is quoted in the NY Times’ lead article on schools shrinking due to charter schools….
Ms. Rhee’s current husband, Kevin Johnson, failed charter school founder, failed real estate developer, and the single most corrupt mayor ever to be elected in Sacramento, has been accused of child sexual abuse SEVEN TIMES, all of which were conveniently swept under the carpet by either payoffs to victims, coverups by local police authorities, or both. Two of these allegations made the national press, including the NYTimes, but have been most copiously documented in the Sacramento Bee by authors Dorothy Korber and Terry Hardy, both of whom were fired from the paper due to ‘cost cutting’ measures — frankly, they got a little too close to the truth — and in the Phoenix Sun, complete with a transcription of a wired conversation the police attempted to use against Kevin Johnson.

Ms. Rhee’s former husband ran a TFA knockoff that supplied nonunion teachers for Rhee when she ran DCSchools, for which she is now under investigation for kickbacks to said organization and misuse of school budgets.
Rhee now takes money from noneother than the Koch Brothers in pursuit of the right’s corporate agenda to dismantle public education as we know it.
But also most recently Rhee has been featured on CURRENT TV’s WAR ROOM program with former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, who soft lobbed the interview asking NOTHING of Rhee’s past and corruption and malfeasance, in a display of just how ineffectual the left, or the ostensible left, can be when challenging difficult and complex issues.
Rhee must be held to account, as should her husbands — both of them — and we need to ensure that the truth of her history and that of those with whom she has associated is revealed for all to see…

Walpin himself was smeared by folks in the Obama Administration (and ultimately fired) when this was released. The cover-up of the alleged criminal activities stemmed from Johnson’s ties to power brokers in DC and the Administration, as well as to probably overblown concerns that these finding could impact the ability of Sacramento to receive additional federal money with an indicted Kevin Johnson serving as mayor. Interestingly, the story of Walpin’s treatment following this investigation is briefly recounted by former Special Investigator for TARP, Neil Barofsky, in his current bestseller _Bailout_.

A wall post that I received with the ad as the post had a comment under it wondering if it was really legit. Since I had posted it on my own wall, after seeing a link to it from a blogger’s comment on your blog, I too began to wonder. I clicked here and clicked there. Googling this and that. Sure enough, there it was as real as could be. I wanted to slap Rhee’s smirky smile right off her face as she so proudly talked about the ad’s message. It is so distasteful in so many ways.
Among other things, it insults America, our athletes, our coaches, our kids, our schools, our teachers. The whole ad is a smirk and a sneer towards the rest of us. What does she like about this country?
I also appreciate that Diane mentions the fat-phobic nature of the ad. As if overweight people don’t have to deal with enough stigma.
There is an undercurrent of meanness to this campaign.

Just wondering why the organization that claims to be for students doesn’t do more bragging about what it does with all those donations. Can’t wait to see the tax return this year.
Yesterday I was on a tour bus, and the driver remarked about 95% of a private school’s graduates going on to top colleges. He then went on to comment about how he didn’t understand why all public schools could not boast the same as the prep academy in an affluent neighborhood, and then he said it was best for him to avoid politics. How right he was. So you see there are fools out there who apparently can’t grasp the effects of socioeconomics, and they are eager to believe all things Rhee and the Billionaire Boys Club. Our guide bragged about all the money he’d made in real estate in the area. Perhaps he could give it all up, we could have super socialism, and maybe most schools could come closer to the standards of the academy. I am not pro socialist, but some people just don’t think through their politics.
The Billionaire boys club supply the bucks to M. Rhee in more than one way.
Rhee’s first two years in Baltimore, and only years as a teacher, were lackluster, at best. She was an average teacher. Like many of her ‘caliber, she dropped out of teaching but went into ed policy, much like the career path of the typical TFA applicant.
NEA pretty much has ‘blood on its hands’ by endorsing Race to the Top and its chief cheerleader, President Obama. It supports a union-busting federal ed policy as well as the decimation of public education, creation of for profit charter schools and the hysteria of data driven curriculum. I’m embarrassed to be a member.
If only teachers had a real union that wasn’t afraid to say NO to the President and his Rhee proteges.

This was the first time I received a StudentsFirst petition on change.org. I thought they ended that contract with Michelle Rhee. This one said that good teachers were grossly under paid and that “god” teachers needed to be paid more. Was that an intentional spelling mistake?!
We only have high poverty rates because we allow people from ow-performing groups to move/live here, unlike most developed nations. And we then encourage those people to reproduce far more than they should.
We used to be able to educate our poor, though. The best thing that could happen to education in this country is for the unions to be eliminated, and education to be completely privatized. Sad to see people on here concerned more about their cushy jobs and above-average salaries (relative to hours worked) than about actual education. The real teachers would be happy to be in systems that demand and produce results, regardless of family income.

Obviously I don’t agree. If a child is homeless, ill, never gets a medical check-up or dental care, it might interfere with his or ability to do school work. Don’t you think? And what is the value of an ad that ridicules obesity, is subtly homophobic, and is factually inaccurate?
I’m not saying that those things don’t matter. I’m saying that, given political realities, emphasizing poverty, healthcare, etc. as a route to ed. reform will accomplish nothing for kids.

Public school teacher do not have and never have had “tenure”. We have “due process” rights to protect teachers from the whims of administrators and school boards. It is quite easy to get rid of “bad” teachers whether they have due process rights or not. I’ve seen it done. And if those supposed “bad” teachers are still in the classroom, isn’t it the administrations problem and fault not the other teachers????? Don’t blame the teachers for administration failures.

De-emphasizing poverty is to deny it’s effects and the fact that we are creating a system in which poverty is an increasing reality for all but the most powerful.
You CLEARLY haven’t read years of replicated research in special education and medicine on poverty’s effects on cognitive development. Poverty is an established risk. Poverty and it’s accompanying family related stressors have cumulative effects in EVERY area of a child’s developmental progress (e.g. communication, cognitive, adaptive, emotional areas). The detrimental effects can begin before birth or soon after, depending on the timing and degree of deprivation. The delays incurred from poverty within the first 3 years of a child’s life are nearly impossible to recoup when a child begins school at age 5 or 6yrs.
Please educate yourself about the shameless conditions our infants, children and their families must endure in the richest country in the world without evaluating the cost of it’s effects.
I find it hard to believe that Rhee is anything more than a political player and opportunist. IMO, she’s too smart to believe the junk she spews. She’s positioning herself as the next Arne Duncan or some such and she’ll get there if the teachers and their unions don’t get behind the efforts – unfortunately way too low key – to discredit her. My beef is with the unions: too little and too late. In my own state of NJ, they caved and as far as I’m concerned they are as much of a political player as our Governor is. The envy of those with pensions and union representation (which attempts to level the playing field) has reduced the American public into a nation of uninformed and intentionally ignorant sheep. I say SPEAK UP… do not stay quiet. Be prepared to engage with anyone at any time. Use a little righteous indignation and stand up for public education.
She’ll never make it through the vetting process or a Senate confirmation. NEVER!
Rhee is shameless. We knew that. What people don’t see is that these charter self-proclaimed “saviors” like Geoffrey Canada and Michelle Rhee are actually cashing in and making a very nice living off the anti-public school crusade and all at the expense of the poor. They are actually doing a very nice job of winning over the conservatives and pop culture non-thinkers. I find it interesting that the government wants to regulate health care because privatization has not worked and now they want to privatize education because public control has not worked. These attitudes ignore the real problems. If you study the success in Finland schools you will find that the government took the brave step years ago to give up total control and hand it to the schools. The schools have total control over the money and many important elements that easily become political obstacles. The success has been overwhelming. I never see that happening in the United States. Why? It would mean giving up education as a political platform to do what is right for kids. Think of what the educators that know what to do could actually do if the the politicians stayed out of the mix. Teaching is difficult enough however with every education reform after every term a governor serves only takes us down further.
Teachers are not politically active. I was surprised when I read the following in a Tucson Values Teachers email::

Experts have noted that on several close votes on district overrides and other critical educational efforts, teachers could have made the difference between victory and defeat.
If my church can have a voter regisration drive adjacent to worship, why can’t/don’t schools impress upon our teachers the IMPORTANCE OF VOTING, say adjacent to our faculty meetings??
You have to admit, the video should clearly show Rhee’s organization for the -no substance- attention seeking-fake reality that it is…but then I thought the ’empressses new clothes’ issue would be put to rest when she shared about taping (not 1 but) an entire classroom of children’s mouths while laughing about their bleeding as an orientation to new teachers. Uugh.
That is why folks in DC voted to get rid of her, how did we know she would unleash her brand of crazy* on the nation and now on the world stage.
At this point short of Rhee openly abusing children in the middle of the Olympic Stadium…I just don’t see and end to the insanity.

I think that just like the presidential candidates are doing, there needs to be a response to that awful ad that is just as vicious.

We’ve know for half a century that socioeconomic status of families is the number #1 predictor of student success, and yet (SIGH!), here’s Michelle Rhee selling out people like me growing up 30 years ago. I have yet to see the commercial, but given your description, I apparently don’t need to.
How could David Gregory sit through that ad on Meet the Press and simply laugh awkwardly and not call Rhee-prehensible out for what she is?!
The Voting Rights Act (VRA) must be upheld by the supreme court:
The numerous despicable attempts to restrict voting made during the last election cycle are proof of that. Anyone who truly believes the VRA is obsolete needs to recognize, given last year’s voter suppression efforts, the Jim Crowe era is biding its time.
Now even if you are dumb enough to believe that all is OK with the world and there are no reasons to have the voting rights act on the books. Then why are the the parties at opposite end’s on this? Why are the Republicans in America trying to keep people from the poles ?
The argument is that VRA is discriminatory against Southern states to require them but not other states to seek pre-clearance for voting laws; I actually agree. The Voting Rights Act should require *ALL* states to seek pre-clearance. After what we’ve seen the GOP try to pass in states all across the nation prior to the last 2012 election, I see no reason this safeguard against voter suppression should be limited to just Southern states as suggested by VRA of 1965 but now should be expanded to apply to ALL 50 states.
